Localized Tension Produced by Combined Geometric Discontinuities Tensiones localizadas producidas por discontinuidades geométricas combinadas
Ricardo Mario Amé,Gabriel María Dasso,Daniel Lezama
Revista Cubana de Ingeniería , 2011, DOI: 10.1234/rci.v2i2.49
Abstract: Many mechanical components especially those in machinery and of steel structures are designed with various forms which may include section changes, holes, threaded parts, keyways or multiple discontinued geometrical elevations that produce localized stresses. Often, the over lapping of two or more discontinuities in the same section or in very close sections is observed and this over lapping makes it very difficult to determine the value of the localized tension. In this present work, ABAQUS software is applied to determine the increased localized tension insections having more than one geometric discontinuity and helpful elaborated graphs are developed for practical purposes in simple mechanical design. However, this analysis is limited to geometric discontinued structures with slots of macroscopic dimensions. First a test run is carried out using the software on already verified situations accepted in the given literature so as to validate the method, after which the software is applied to a Hub of combined generic geometric designs in flat, symmetrical and with axial loads pieces. It is shown that the software is relevant because it verifies those tested Kt values offered by the commonly recognized literature. Results of the combined discontinuities are then obtained and represented by means of a graph which in the future will be useful in mechanical design. It can be concluded that the available information in the literature about combined geometric concentrators is limited and in some cases incur doubts. Now, values for complex designs can be obtained as a result of the availability of these software tools. In addition, the making of graphics using the results obtained from the application of such software is more practical which in return has improved the efficiency of designs.
Molecular Mechanisms of Trastuzumab Resistance in HER2 Overexpressing Breast Cancer
Gabriel L. Fiszman,María A. Jasnis
International Journal of Breast Cancer , 2011, DOI: 10.4061/2011/352182
Abstract: The epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a tyrosine kinase overexpressed in nearly 20% to 25% of invasive breast cancers. Trastuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets HER2. The majority of patients with metastatic breast cancer initially respond to trastuzumab, however, within 1 year of treatment disease progresses. Several molecular mechanisms have been described as contributing to the development of trastuzumab resistance. They could be grouped as impaired access of trastuzumab to HER2, upregulation of HER2 downstream signaling pathways, signaling of alternative pathways, and impaired immune antitumor mechanisms. However, since many of them have overlapping effects, it would be of great clinical impact to identify the principal signaling pathways involved in drug resistance. Significant efforts are being applied to find other therapeutic modalities besides trastuzumab treatment to be used alone or in combination with current modalities. 1. Introduction Breast cancer is the most common malignancy worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer death in women in USA and the first one in Argentina [1]. In the past decades, the development of strategies for breast cancer treatment focused on understanding the expression, regulation, and function of critical signaling pathways involved in cancer initiation and progression and allowed the identification of breast cancer subsets with different biology [2]. One of the most important targeted therapies has been the use of the antihuman epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) for tumors overexpressing this receptor [3]. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that can be classified in different subsets with distinct biology and molecular profiles [4], some of which can be associated with enhanced tumor aggressiveness and poor clinical outcome [5]. Breast tumors vary according to the expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and amplification of HER2 which is overexpressed in approximately 20% to 25% of invasive breast cancers [6]. The resulting subgroups are important not only for clinical behaviour and prognosis, but also for predictive response to targeted therapies against these receptors and the pathways they activate. The HER2/neu gene encodes a 185-kDA transmembrane tyrosine kinase (TK) receptor that belongs to the EGF receptor (EGFR) family which consists of EGFR/ErbB1 (HER1), ErbB2 (HER2), ErbB3 (HER3), and ErbB4 (HER4). All receptors, with the exception of HER3, contain a cytoplasmatic TK region and all, with the exception of HER2, bind specific

Abstract: introduction. migraine is frequent in children. children's drawings of their symptoms can help to identify it. objective. to evaluate the accuracy of children's drawings to identify migraine in those who suffer from headache. population, materials and methods. we evaluated 48 patients aged 5 to 19 years, assisted for headache. in all cases they were asked to draw what happened to them before and during the episode, and then the drawing was analyzed by a pediatric neurologist ("artistic diagnosis"). afterwards, all were evaluated by another pediatric neurologist ("clinical diagnosis"). sensitivity (se), specificity (sp), negative (npv) and positive (ppv) predictive values of the "artistic diagnosis" to predict "clinical diagnosis" were calculated. possible interaction of age, intellectual standard score (iss), maternal education and previous contact with a neurologist was evaluated by logistic regression. results. after controlling by those factors, the "artistic diagnosis" was found to be an independent predictor of the "clinical diagnosis" of migraine (p < 0.01, or: 23), achieving se: 69,6%, sp: 88%, ppv: 84,2% and npv: 75,9. the performance was still better when only subjects with iss ≥ 70 were considered. conclusion. children tend to communicate their symptoms more effectively through drawings than verbally. the "artistic diagnosis" was accurate to predict the "clinical diagnosis" of migraine.
Stoichiometry in Context: Inquiry-Guided Problems of Chemistry for Encouraging Critical Thinking in Engineering Students
Gabriel Pinto,María Luisa Prolongo
International Journal of Engineering Pedagogy , 2013, DOI: 10.3991/ijep.v3i1.2313
Abstract: This paper focuses on examples of educational tools concerning the learning of chemistry for engineering students through different daily life cases. These tools were developed during the past few years for enhancing the active role of students. They refer to cases about mineral water, medicaments, dentifrices and informative panels about solar power, where an adequate quantitative treatment through stoichiometry calculations allows the interpretation of data and values announced by manufacturers. These cases were developed in the context of an inquiry-guided instruction model. By bringing tangible chemistry examples into the classroom we provide an opportunity for engineering students to apply this science to familiar products in hopes that they will appreciate chemistry more, will be motivated to study concepts in greater detail, and will connect the relevance of chemistry to everyday life.

Interventions to reduce dietary salt consumption: the importance of clearly translating evidence to those who most need it
Gabriel Rada,Luz María Letelier
Medwave , 2012,
Abstract: The publication of a Cochrane review that assesses the effects of strategies geared towards reducing sodium consumption on cardiovascular outcomes has spawned great world-wide controversy. A shortcoming of this study is the high number of patients lost to long-term follow-up. In addition, the limited number of included studies, patients and events, makes the evidence contained in this review of low, or very low quality, thus translating into inconclusive results. This review has become the most commented Cochrane publication in the press since this indicator is measured, which can also be explained by the press release issued by Cochrane entitled “Cutting Down on Salt Doesn't Reduce Your Chance of Dying”. While the rest of the press release is toned down, it does not reduce the harm made by an unclear and tabloid-like heading. Adequate communication of evidence to target audiences is highly complex. There are ongoing world-wide initiatives on this respect to get the job done right and “knowledge transfer” is considered to be an emerging discipline.

Abstract: In the time period 1996-2004, a case-control study on diet and cervical cancer was conducted at the National Cancer Institute in Uruguay. The study included 268 cases and 536 controls with non-neoplastic diseases. The foods and beverages in the food-frequency questionnaire were included in a factor analytic model. This method retained three factors which were labeled as the drinker, red meat, and prudent patterns. The model explained 60% of the variance. Whereas the red meat and drinker patterns were directly associated with the risk of cervical cancer (OR for red meat pattern 1.79, 95% CI 1.12-2.86), on the other hand, the prudent pattern was inversely associated with cervical cancer (OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.38-0.93). To our knowledge, this study was the first one using factor analysis in order to elucidate the role of the diet in relation with cervical cancer.
