Seasonality and host preference of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi of five plant species in the inner Mongolia steppe, China

Abstract: the seasonal change and host preference of arbuscular mycorrhizal (am) colonization and community composition of five common plant species agropyron cristatum, anemarrhena asphodeloides, cleistogenes squarrosa, leymus chinensis, and stipa grandis in the inner mongolia steppe were investigated. the am root length colonization rates were different among the five plant species and were generally high in early (may and june) and late (september) growth seasons and low in august. a total of 18 am fungal species representing five genera were isolated from rhizosphere soils of the five plant species, and most am fungi had not host specificity, except that acaulospora sp., glomus constrictum, g. diaphanum and glomus sp. showed a certain degree of host preference. glomus albidum, g. etunicatum and g. geosporum were the dominant species and showed various sporulation patterns in the five plants during the growth seasons. the am fungal spore densities and species richness increased from may to september and decreased in october and were different in the same month in the five plants. multivariate analyses revealed that season and host significantly co-affected the am fungal spore density, species richness, and shannon-wiener diversity index, and the season had higher influence than the host.

Progress of the function of mycorrhizal fungi in the cycle of carbon and nitrogen

Abstract: Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association formed between soil fungi and plant roots. Mycorrhizal fungi exchange soil-derived nutrients for carbohydrates from host plants, and therefore play an important role in the cycle of carbon and nitrogen in ecosystems. Research results indicated that mycorrhizal fungi can obtain ca. 4%?26% of total net primary production of host plants, and biomass and secretion (glomalin) of mycorrhizal fungi are important soil carbon-pool. Simultaneously, mycorrhizal fungi may decompose the complex soil organic compounds. Nitrogen is transported from extraradical to intraradical hyphae by a transferring procedure from inorganic to organic and inorganic nitrogen in mycorrhizae. Advances of recent mycorrhizal researches on the metabolic function and mechanism of carbon and nitrogen were summarized and related fields in future studies were also mentioned in this review paper.

Abstract: A survey of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal diversity in Dujiangyan, southwest China has been carried out, and a total of 44 AM fungi including six new records were reported (Zhang et al., 2003 a, b). Another two new records of AM fungi, i.e. Acaulospora koskei J. Blaszkowski and Glomus luteum L.J. Kenn., J.C. Stutz & J.B. Morton, were isolated in the same region and were described in this paper.

Abstract: DNA barcode uses a short gene sequence taken from standardized portions of the genome to identify species. Cytochrome oxidase I (COI), as an animal DNA barcode, has been successfully employed in the species identification. In plants a combination of chloroplast rbcL and matK genes has been accepted as basic DNA barcode. In fungi more genes have being screened and evaluated in all major lineages of fungi by mycologists all over the world. Recently, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) has been recommended as primary DNA barcode of fungi in the Fourth International Barcode of Life Conference. This review summarized the recent progress of fungal DNA barcode, and pointed out the prospect of DNA barcode in future fungal studies.

Abstract: A new fungal species, Pestalotiopsis samarangensis, was isolated from fruit rot in Syzygium samarangense from markets in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces, Thailand. Initially small, circular, black, slightly sunken spots developed on fruits. Later, the spots enlarged rapidly, became sunken, and resulted in a soft decay of the fruit flesh. Molecular analysis of the ITS, β-tubulin, and tef1 combined gene sequences distinguish P. samarangensis from other species in the genus. Pathogenicity testing proved that wounding triggers the disease symptoms and thus careful handling of fruits during transport and storage helps to prevent the disease.

Abstract: 调查了都江堰地区3个不同生境样地(般若寺、馒头山、龙池)中85种优势及常见植物的丛枝菌根真菌侵染率,其中78种植物(91.8%)被丛枝茵根真菌侵染。同时对其中58种植物根围土壤中丛枝菌根真菌的多样性进行分析,共分离到5属47种丛枝菌根真菌,其中球囊霉属(Glomus)35种,无梗囊霉属(Acaulospora)7种,原囊霉属(Archaeospora)1种,内养囊霉属(Entrophospora)2种,巨孢囊霉属(Gigaspora)2种。无梗囊霉属和球囊霉属是3个样地共有的优势属。光壁无梗囊霉(Acaulospara laevis)是龙池的优势种,而地表球囊霉(Glornus versiforme)是般若寺和馒头山的优势种。丛枝菌根真菌的孢子密度和种的丰度显著受到海拔相关因子影响,同时丛枝菌根真菌的种类组成也受较大影响。乔木砍伐没有显著影响丛枝菌根真菌的孢子密度和种的丰度,同时对种类组成影响也较小。根围土壤中丛枝菌根真菌的孢子密度与根系侵染率之间没有显著相关性(R^2=0.0248)。

Abstract: In a survey of endophytic fungi associated with medicinal plants in Beijing, two new records, Phoma jolyana and Microsphaeropsis conielloides, were isolated from Eucommia ulmoides Oliv., Forsythia giraldiana Lingelsh., F. suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl, F. suspensa 'duanzhi', Rhus potaninii Maxim. and Berberis poiretii Schneid. These fungi are redescribed and illustrated in this paper. The dried cultures are deposited in the Herbarium Mycologicum Academiae Sinicae (HMAS) in Beijing.
