Some Issues on Computer Networks: Architecture and Key Technologies

Abstract: The evolution of computer networks has experienced several major steps, and research focus of each step has been kept changing and evolving, from ARPANET to OSI/RM, then HSN (high speed network) and HPN (high performance network). During the evolution, computer networks represented by Internet have made great progress and gained unprecedented success. However, with the appearance and intensification of tussle, along with the three difficult problems (service customizing, resource control and user management) of modern network, it is found that traditional Internet and its architecture no longer meet the requirements of next generation network. Therefore, it is the next generation network that current Internet must evolve to. With the mindset of achieving valuable guidance for research on next generation network, this paper firstly analyzes some dilemmas facing current Internet and its architecture, and then surveys some recent influential research work and progresses in computer networks and related areas, including new generation network architecture, network resource control technologies, network management and security, distributed computing and middleware, wireless/mobile network, new generation network services and applications, and foundational theories on network modeling. Finally, this paper concludes that within the research on next generation network, more attention should be paid to the high availability network and corresponding architecture, key theories and supporting technologies.

Abstract: 本文按照网络体系结构认知框架,遵循“需求目标→设计原则→具体实现”的合理研究思路,对满足下一代网络发展需求的新一代网络体系结构进行了研究。首先对下一代网络的概念进行了比较全面的分析,在此基础上明确地归纳了新一代网络体系结构的10条主要需求目标;然后通过总结、吸收相关领域的最新成果,研究提出了与这些需求目标相适应的若干新的网络体系结构设计原则;最后,以这些新的设计原则为指导,研究并建立起了满足下一代网络发展需求的新一代网络体系结构INSA参考模型,为满足下一代网络发展需求的新一代网络体系结构的研究提供了较好的思路并奠定了良好的基础。
Current State of the Art in Computer Networks and Connotation Analysis of Network Architecture

Abstract: Traditional network architecture with pitfalls and deficiencies would be better not chosen to guide the evolution of current Internet to next generation network any more. It is urgent to research new generation network architecture that sufficing new requirements after well-estimating current state of the art in computer networks and reflecting the essence of network architecture. This paper analyzes the current status as well as the evolution and development trends of computer networks represented by Internet, and specifically it presents an in-depth anatomy of the essence of network architecture from multiple perspectives. In order to get complete recognition and understanding of the essence of network architecture, it demonstrates the necessity to synthetically consider the characteristics of network architecture such as generality, individuality, abstractiveness, and proceduralness from both systematic and evolutionary perspectives. Correspondingly, this paper suggests a rational Cognitive Framework for Network Architecture, and results in this research are provided as valuable reference and guidance for further research on new generation network architecture.
A Theory of Generalized Multi-Rate Multicast Weight-Based Fair Rate Allocation

Abstract: In this paper, the generalized multi-rate multicast weight-based fair rate allocation problem is studied. First, a multi-rate multicast network model is formalized, and the minimum rate requirement and weight of each virtual session is considered in the model. Based on the model, the concept of generalized multi-rate multicast weight-based max-min fairness is defined, and the theory of generalized multi-rate multicast weight-based max-min fair rate allocation is established. At last, a centralized algorithm to solve the generalized multi-rate multicast weight-based fair rate allocation problem is presented, and its correctness is also proved.

A Classified Pre-Computed QoS Routing Algorithm

Abstract: In order to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) of the application on Internet, Internet engineering task force (IETF) has presented a set of network service mode such as IntServ/RSVP (Integrated Service/Resource Reservation Protocol), DiffServ (differentiated service) and MPLS (multi protocol label switching). All of these service modes need a correlative QoS routing mechanism and algorithm to assign an adapted route. Based on the research of existing routing algorithms, a new pre-computed QoS routing algorithm CCPF(classified minimum cost path first)is put forward,which uses bandwidth as a basic metric and gives a weighted cost function as a path optimal criterion.By simulation,this algorithm is compared with the others.The results show that it can get differet routes among different bandwidth-ranges to support multipl service modes.
COM/CORBA Interworking Based on Multi-Interface

Abstract: In the OMG's COM/CORBA interworking specification, interworking between COM and CORBA is implemented via bridges. Though the interworking model is flexible, it needs heavy overheads which leads to poor performance. Moreover, there are problems in its object life-cycle mapping. It does not provide portability either. In this paper, a COM/CORBA interworking model is proposed based on multi-interface object integration method. In the new model, a client can directly access a foreign object, therefore interworking performance is improved remarkably. In addition, it enhances interworking transparency and provides application portability between COM and CORBA environments.
Policy of Fuzzy Neural Network Based Congestion Control in High- Speed Network

Abstract: In this paper, a kind of traffic prediction and congestion control policy based on FNN (fuzzy neural network) is proposed for ATM (asynchronous transfer mode). Congestion control is one of the key problems in high-speed networks, such as ATM. Conventional traffic prediction method for congestion control using BPN (back propagation neural network) has suffered from long convergence time and dissatisfying precision, and it is not effective. The fuzzy neural network scheme presented in this paper can solve these limitations satisfactorily for its good capability of processing inaccurate information and learning. Finally, the performance of the scheme based on BPN is compared with the scheme based on FNN using simulations. The results show that the FNN scheme is effective.
A Conceptual Model of Service Customization and Its Implementation

Abstract: With the development of Internet and next generation networks in telecommunications, more and more new services are required to be introduced into networks. Introducing new services into traditional network is always associated with standardizing new protocols. The progress of protocol standardization usually takes several years, which cannot meet the increasing demands of the applications in Internet and next generation networks. Service customization in network systems may be one possible solution to cope with this problem. Based on the principle that network service is provided by interactions among protocol entities, this paper proposes a conceptual model of service customization (SECUM) by separating the service logic from protocol interactive logic within existing network architecture. The theory of Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) is used to formalize the SECUM in order to locate exactly the service logic and to define precisely the SECUM. For validating the SECUM's usability in practical network systems, this paper also proposes an implementation model for SECUM: a component-based protocol implementation model (CPIM). CPIM discomposes protocol entity into application component, service component, message component and communication component. Service component associates application component with message component. Users or network managers can customize network services by configuring service component. The paper shows respectively the applications of SECUM and CPIM by proposing a customizable IP service model based on SECUM and describing an implementation of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based on CPIM. Compared with the existing service-customization techniques, SECUM is a service customization model internal to network system and may provide more powerful capabilities of service customization.
