Abstract: introduction: the students' conceptions are very complex and depend on the history of life of each person, of his culture and of his social representations, being connected to the knowledge, to the values system and to the social practices 1. in turn, the practices of health education express the conceptions of those who develop and are influenced by them. from here we concluded that the conceptions of health promotion and health education are very important. material and methods: therefore, the general purpose of the present study was to compare the values system in promotion and health education transmitted in courses in the health area, preschool teaching, basic teaching and social service, in order to understand the relation between the conceptions to be taught and the taught conceptions. for such we developed a cross-sectional, comparative, and descriptive study, which sample was constituted by 709 students (63 % of the universe of the students) of seven university courses, being four courses in the scope of health (medicine, nursing of braga, o' porto and vila real), two in the scope of education (infancy educators and teachers of the 1st cycle of basic education) and one course in the social service area. we applied an auto-filling questionnaire to the students of the 1st and of the 4th year of the referred courses. results: the five more used keywords by the total of the sample for referring the health concept were the following (by decreasing order): "well-being", "hospital", "disease", "doctors" and "nurses", being the first one used by 77.4 % of the students. the predominance of these keywords can be connected to a reductionist vision of the determinants of health, centred in the system of health, excluding the others determinants of health. it was in the braga nursing course (br-n) that we verified a higher reduction in the keywords connected to the reductionist vision of the health term, between the 1st and the 4th year; similarly, the course of basic t

Abstract: the general purpose of this study was to examine the effect of training on the acquisition of values in health education among vila real nursing school students, northern region, in trásos-montes and in alto douro, in the municipality of vila real, lordelo, portugal, compared to those taking other courses. this is a descriptive, comparative, and transverse study. in total, 709 students from seven colleges took place in this research project, and an attempt was made to include authors intervening in the health education process, who replied to a self-completion questionnaire in the period ranging from october to december 2004. most participants (86.5 percent) believe health education has values to promote, and 'responsibility' is the best value to 19.2 percent of the students. the study showed that it is in the nursing courses that most progress is made in terms of values, with highly significant differences (p < 0.001). additionally, it also revealed that the 4th year students' average was higher than the 1st year's. these results are evidence of the need there is, in such courses, to work on the values underlying the process, which are so necessary for the performance of these professions.

Abstract: One of the science education objective, based on relationships between science, technology, society and environment (STSE) is, to form citizens capable on evaluating and taking decisions about the scientific advances impact on society and environment. In a two-way perspective, understand relationships between STSE, provides a vision of science as a human construction and therefore fallible, changeable and not neutral. In this study, we present some results from a comparative study on the influence of ethical conceptions of the nature of science, in two groups of future biology teachers, one from Brazil and, another one from Portugal. For data collection we constructed an attitude scale of Likert-type, which was validated mathematically and semantically. Results shows strong influence of social values, as in transgenic products, where the students’ ideas varied according to the ethical discussions more present in each country.

Abstract: the text introduces the theoretical-methodological framework, and initial results, of an intervention-research about the formative processes of beginner teachers and their mentors. the initial formation of teachers by their mentors takes place under the mentorship program of the ufscar teachers' portal (www.portaldosprofessores.ufscar.br), and the formation of mentors (experienced teachers) happens in presence meetings with the authors of this work. research and intervention are based on a constructive-collaborative methodology, and the main tools of data-gathering are the narratives - both written and spoken - and interactive conversations. the theoretical framework assumes that: the learning of teaching is a continuous process influenced by beliefs and conceptions, and by knowledges of different natures; the initiation to teaching is a conflicting, but rich, period of intensive learning, during which the beginner teacher effectively becomes a teacher; teacher educators - just as teachers in general - need support for their professional development; continued education must be school-centered, even when virtually, and focus on responding to teachers' demands considering the context of the action; online education via the internet is an important possibility for teacher education. among the results, we mention the construction of new professional knowledges by the beginner teachers, mentors, and researchers; the experience by the mentors - seasoned and successful teachers - of initiation processes similar to those undergone by the beginner teachers they supervise; the potentials of learning communities and of narratives for the promotion of the professional development of teaching.
Practice of Physical Activity and Its Relationship with Lipid Profile of Adolescents  [PDF]

Abstract: In order to assess the prevalence of physical activity (PA) and its relationship with lipid profile among adolescents, a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted with 102 adolescents aged 15 to 19 years from public schools of Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil. The following variables were analyzed: age, gender, ethnicity, maternal education, socioeconomic status, nutritional status, the practice of PA and lipid profile. The variables were obtained through validated form, anthropometry (weight and height) and blood collection by contract laboratory. Double entry and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 22.0 were performed. First, a descriptive analysis of all variables was conducted, as well as measures of central tendency and dispersion for continuous variables. Accordingly, distribution was tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. According to results, correlation was evaluated by Pearson/Spearman tests. Significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyses. The study was approved by the Ethics Approach Committee (EAC) of the State University of Paraíba. The most prevalent sex in the sample was female and regarding maternal education, 35.4% had complete high school. Regarding serum lipoproteins, 16% showed elevated total cholesterol and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) 66% below the desired value. With regard to physical activity, 60.8% had insufficient PA levels. The sample showed changes in lipid profile and insufficiently active life style, besides having overpowered the eutrophic nutritional status. No statistically significant correlations between variables of the lipid profile and the time of PA were observed. These findings highlight the importance of physical exercise for maintaining health and suggest studies with larger populations in order to check the scientific literature regarding this topic.

Abstract: Introduction: The more intense and early development of obesity, the greater the risk of persistence and severity of comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease. There is evidence that high serum concentrations of lipoprotein (a) [Lp (a)] and C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Objectives: To verify the change in the levels of Lp (a) and ultrasensitive CRP and its relationship with the nutritional status of adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted with overweight children and adolescents between August 2012 and July 2013 attended at the Center for Childhood Obesity. The measurement of inflammatory markers was performed in the Clinical Laboratory of the State University of Paraiba. Comparison of sociodemographic variables by sex was tested by chi-square; the association of the risk markers according to age was evaluated by Student’s t test, and the body mass index by analysis of Pearson correlation. The normality distribution was tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Confidence interval of 95% was adopted in all analyses. The study was approved by the Ethics Research Committee of UEPB (CAAE 0256.0.133.000-11). Results: Of the 133 children and adolescents evaluated, 60.9% were female and 72.2% were adolescents. Body Mass Index, lipo (a) and u-CRP showed statistically significant association with age (p < 0.01). There was a positive ascending correlation (r = 0.273, p < 0.01) of u-CRP with BMI, which was not verified for lipoprotein (a). Conclusion: As a cardiovascular risk marker already established in literature, the association of u-CRP with the nutritional status of adolescents, proportionally, shows the need for losing weight in this population, especially at early age. A deeper and long-term investigation should be carried out for more effective and consistent contribution to public health.

Abstract: purpose: to standardize recordings of pattern electroretinograms (perg) in normal human subjects. methods: the standardization followed the model proposed by the international organization of eletroretinography and was specific for the laboratory of evoked potentials of the department of neurology, faculty of medical sciences, state university of campinas. two types of stimuli were used, one of 30 minutes of arch of visual angle and another of 60 minutes of arch of visual angle. results: in all patients a positive wave, defined internationally as p50, and a negative, called n95, were obtained without interferences. the normal range for latency, amplitude and duration of each wave was obtained. there were significative differences in amplitude, latency and duration of p50 and n95 waves among the several age groups. there was an increase in latency and a decrease in amplitude with increasing age. no significative differences were found among the variables comparing different stimuli, sex or when eyes were compared with each other. conclusions: the standardization of pattern electroretinograms yield reproductibility of results and the possibility of further comparative studies.

Abstract: OBJETIVO: Realizar a normatiza o do eletrorretinograma por revers o alternada em indivíduos oftalmologicamente normais e sem doen as neurológicas associadas, determinando a faixa de normalidade estratificada por sexo, faixa etária e estímulo utilizado. MéTODOS: A padroniza o seguiu o modelo proposto pela Organiza o Internacional de Eletrorretinografia e a normatiza o foi específica para o laboratório de potenciais evocados do Departamento de Neurologia da Faculdade de Ciências Médicas - Universidade Estadual de Campinas. Dois tipos de estímulos foram utilizados: o denominado estímulo 16, que proporciona angulo visual de 60 minutos de arco e o de 32, que proporciona angulo visual de 30. RESULTADOS: Em todos os pacientes obteve-se uma onda positiva, definida internacionalmente como P50 e uma negativa, chamada N95, sem a presen a de artefatos. Foram observados intervalos de normalidade que continham a média das latências, amplitudes e dura es das curvas positiva e negativa, internacionalmente aceitas. As ondas P50 e N95 apresentaram diferen as significativas na amplitude, latência e dura o quando comparadas às diversas faixas etárias, ocorrendo diminui o na amplitude das ondas e aumento na latência total do eletrorretinograma com o aumento da idade. Construíram-se tabelas com intervalo de predi o de 95% em rela o à idade para a amplitude, latência e dura o das curvas P50 e N95. CONCLUS ES: A normatiza o do eletrorretinograma por revers o alternada proporciona a reprodutibilidade dos resultados e a possibilidade de estudos comparativos.
Estudo prospectivo e comparativo dos resultados funcionais após reparo aberto e artroscópico das les?es do manguito rotador

Abstract: objective: to prospectively assess the surgical results from patients undergoing repairs to rotator cuff injuries via open and arthroscopic procedures, with regard to functional and clinical features, and by means of ultrasound examinations, and to compare occurrences of renewed tearing. methods: sixty patients underwent operations performed by the same surgeon (29 via open surgery and 31 via arthroscopy), to repair complete rotator cuff tears. the procedures were performed at hospital governor israel pinheiro (hgip) and mater dei hospital in belo horizonte, minas gerais, between august 2007 and february 2009. the patients were assessed functionally by means of the ucla score before and after the operation, and magnetic resonance imaging was done before the operation. all the patients were reassessed at least 12 months after the operation, and an ultrasound examination was also performed at this time. results: out of the 29 patients who underwent open surgery, 27 (93.1%) presented good or excellent results, with a mean ucla score of 32 after the operation. their mean follow-up was 14 months. three patients presented renewed tearing on ultrasound, of whom one remained asymptomatic. out of the 31 patients who underwent arthroscopic procedures, 29 (93.5%) presented good or excellent results, with a mean ucla score of 33 after the operation. their mean follow-up was 19 months. two patients presented renewed tearing, of whom one remained asymptomatic and one evolved with loosening of an anchor, with an unsatisfactory result. conclusion: the repairs on rotator cuff injuries presented good results by means of both open surgery and arthroscopy, with similar functional results in the two groups and similar rates of renewed tearing.

Abstract: intralenticular foreign bodies comprise about 5% to 10% of all intraocular foreign bodies and can result in serious complications. the management depends on some factors like size, location, material type and the risk of infection. we present a patient with an intralenticular metal foreign body in the left eye that, following initial treatment with topical steroid and antibiotic, underwent lens aspiration with removal of the intralenticular foreign body and insertion of a posterior chamber intraocular lens with good visual outcome.
