A condition to prescribe Mean Curvature Equations
Alvaro Ortiz,Gonzalo Garcia
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: Let (B^n, g) the $n-$dimensional Ball. In this paper we show the existence of a solution to the prescribing mean curvature equation: In the case $h$ is rotationally symetric, is well known that the Kazdan-Warner condition implies that a necesary condition for $\eqref{main}$ to have a solution is: h>0 \text{somewhere and}h'(r) \text{change signs} This condition was improved to: {eqnarray}\label{dos} h'(r) \text{changes signs where} h>0 {eqnarray} However, is this a sufficient condition?. In this paper we prove that if $h(r)$ satisfies a flatness condition and is radially symmetric then $\eqref{dos}$ is the necessary and suficient condition to have a solution on the subcritical level.
Mathematical and computational modeling for describing the basic behavior of free radicals and antioxidants within epithelial cells
Alvaro Juan Ojeda Garcia
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: The traditional methods of the biology, based on illustrative descriptions and linear logic explanations, are discussed. This work aims to improve this approach by introducing alternative tools to describe and represent complex biological systems. Two models were developed, one mathematical and another computational, both were made in order to study the biological process between free radicals and antioxidants. Each model was used to study the same process but in different scenarios. The mathematical model was used to study the biological process in an epithelial cells culture; this model was validated with the experimental data of Anne Hanneken's research group from the Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine, published by the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science in July 2006. The computational model was used to study the same process in an individual. The model was made using C++ programming language, supported by the network theory of aging.

Abstract: tialn films were deposited by rf magnetron sputtering onto aisi 4140 steel substrates. a mixed target of metallic ti and al with a nominal composition of 60 atom% ti and 40 atom% al was used. the substrate temperature was varied between 260 oc and 330 oc, at a pn2/par pressure ratio of about 0.1. coatings of different thickness were obtained, varying the time deposition between 2 and 4,5 hours. the chemical composition of the films was determined by edx, and the surface topography by afm. the electrochemical behavior, determined by eis and tafel, and the micro - hardness were analyzed; the coatings displayed mainly a granular structure with small and regular grains.
The Importance of Social Media for Commerce. A Case Study in Madeira (Portugal)
Irene Garcia Medina,Pedro Alvaro Correia Pereira
International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM) , 2012, DOI: 10.3991/ijim.v6i1.1825
Abstract: The continuity and the success of organizations appear increasingly associated with the incorporation of social media. The success depends of the structural and procedural changes that the organization has to make. Today, social media are the new digital marketing tools that help in the processes of communication. Companies need to understand that they are no longer the exclusive owners of the relation of consumers with their products/services; instead, the survival of the organizations depends of the effective utilization of the social media. Creative and innovative solutions are not necessarily too expensive and the internet ends up being one of the best marketing tools available for the organizations. In a more transparent and dynamic world, consumers trust other people to provide advice and recommendations about products and services more and more through social media and it is important to know how and why social media influence organizations. This study analyzes through a literature review the current importance of social media for digital marketing communication and shows a case study on traditional shops that use social media to obtain competitive advantages over shopping centers in Funchal (Madeira, Portugal). To finish, the study proposes a new model of business for successful marketing strategies. Also, the article explains how to manage the changes associated and how collaborators need to get used to working in a wider and more dynamic community.
Architecture and Protocol of a Semantic System Designed for Video Tagging with Sensor Data in Mobile Devices
Elsa Macias,Jaime Lloret,Alvaro Suarez,Miguel Garcia
Sensors , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/s120202062
Abstract: Current mobile phones come with several sensors and powerful video cameras. These video cameras can be used to capture good quality scenes, which can be complemented with the information gathered by the sensors also embedded in the phones. For example, the surroundings of a beach recorded by the camera of the mobile phone, jointly with the temperature of the site can let users know via the Internet if the weather is nice enough to swim. In this paper, we present a system that tags the video frames of the video recorded from mobile phones with the data collected by the embedded sensors. The tagged video is uploaded to a video server, which is placed on the Internet and is accessible by any user. The proposed system uses a semantic approach with the stored information in order to make easy and efficient video searches. Our experimental results show that it is possible to tag video frames in real time and send the tagged video to the server with very low packet delay variations. As far as we know there is not any other application developed as the one presented in this paper.
Diastereoselective and enantioselective reduction of tetralin-1,4-dione
E Peter Kündig,Alvaro Enriquez-Garcia
Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry , 2008, DOI: 10.3762/bjoc.4.37
Abstract: Background The chemistry of tetralin-1,4-dione, the stable tautomer of 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene, has not been explored previously. It is readily accessible and offers interesting opportunities for synthesis. Results The title reactions were explored. L-Selectride reduced the diketone to give preferentially the cis-diol (d.r. 84 : 16). Red-Al gave preferentially the trans-diol (d.r. 13 : 87). NaBH4, LiAlH4, and BH3 gave lower diastereoselectivities (yields: 76–98%). Fractional crystallization allowed isolation of the cis-diol and the trans-diol (55% and 66% yield, respectively). Borane was used to cleanly give the mono-reduction product. Highly enantioselective CBS reductions afforded the trans-diol (72% yield, 99% ee) and the mono-reduction product (81%, 95% ee). Conclusion Diastereoselective and enantioselective reductions of the unexplored tetralin-1,4-dione provides a very convenient entry into a number of synthetically highly attractive 1,4-tetralindiols and 4-hydroxy-1-tetralone.
A Systematic Approach to Design Domain-Specific Software Architectures
Eduardo S. Almeida,Alexandre Alvaro,Vinicius C. Garcia,Leandro Nascimento
Journal of Software , 2007, DOI: 10.4304/jsw.2.2.38-51
Abstract: Since the first works involving software reuse, domain engineering is considered a key process to develop reusable and flexible software. However, the results have shown that there is still much to do before the vision of domain engineering is completely achieved. Among the reasons for this problem, we may highlight the lack of a process to support the design of domain-specific software architectures. This paper presents such an approach, based on a well defined set of principles, guidelines and metrics. We also present an experimental study that evaluated the viability of applying the approach in domain engineering projects.
Finite-size scaling of survival probability in branching processes
Rosalba Garcia-Millan,Francesc Font-Clos,Alvaro Corral
Physics , 2014,
Abstract: Branching processes pervade many models in statistical physics. We investigate the survival probability of a Galton-Watson branching process after a finite number of generations. We reveal the finite-size scaling law of the survival probability for a given branching process ruled by a probability distribution of the number of offspring per element whose standard deviation is finite, obtaining the exact scaling function as well as the critical exponents. Our findings prove the universal behavior of branching processes concerning the survival probability.
