ZooKeys , 2011, DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.102.1343
Abstract: Bruchines damage agricultural crops and trees, reducing the quantity and quality of the seeds. The aim of this study is to record, for the first time, Paracrias pluteus as a parasitoid on the immature stages of Sennius spodiogaster and S. cupreatus on seeds of Melanoxylon brauna in Teixeiras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Paracrias pluteus is a parasitoid without previous host records and known only from Costa Rica. Specimens obtained in this study add to knowledge of the biology of Paracrias species with a new host group (Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), and the first host record and a new distribution for P. pluteus.

A Case for “Radiolysis” in Radiotherapy of Keloids  [PDF]
K. Malaker, H. Weatherburn, H. De Souza
International Journal of Medical Physics,Clinical Engineering and Radiation Oncology (IJMPCERO) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijmpcero.2014.34029
Abstract: Successful treatment of keloids has eluded the medical community since their first description. Multitudes of therapeutic options are available, but none achieves satisfactory resolution of keloids. One major stumbling block is lack of understanding about their genesis. Assuming keloids are tumors, attempts have been made to treat this condition with standard radiotherapy, with dismal results. Keloidal masses are not an active biological entity. They are aggregations of cellular, hypovascular, hypoxic bundles of collagen, which are produced by atypical fibroblasts in the wounds and eventually cease production due to a hostile biological environment. Having no demonstrable inherent process of disposal of these collagen bundles, this excessive collagen tends to linger to form the bulk of keloids. The lesions eventually become symptomatic and aesthetically unacceptable, and therapeutic intervention is sought. Of all available treatments, such as post-resection radiotherapy, primary radiotherapy in selected cases and primary brachytherapy stand out above any other form of treatment. Be it brachytherapy or external beam treatment, one fundamental aspect of radiation action is the process of “radiolysis”, explaining why “radiobiological” approaches have been ineffective.
Processos de significa??o no primeiro ano de vida
Amorim, Kátia de Souza;
Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722012000100006
Abstract: former studies suggest evidences of the signification processes of babies, instigating to verify its occurrence. these processes were investigated by case studies of babies (5-12 m.o), attending a daycare center. empirical data were gathered using interviews and video-tape scenes, which were microgenetically analyzed, based on the network of meanings perspective. behaviors that indicated possible signification processes were selected and analyzed. four cases are presented. signification (as irritation, ask for or take an object) and signification means (like stretching the arms, open and spin the palm hand) were verified and considered as co-constructed since birth, though not always recognized by partners. the role of embodiment within the processes is highlighted. results unfold issues regarding infant development, which demand new research incursions.

Acta Scientiarum : Agronomy , 2010,
Abstract: Two simultaneous experiments were accomplished in the Nursery of Ornamental Plants of the Federal University of Paraná State with the objective of evaluating the effect of mineral fertilization on the growth of nursery trees of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana planted directly in the field and in individual packings. The experimental design was the completely randomized with five combinations of NPK 4-30-10 + urea, in grams (0 + 0; 30 + 10; 60 + 20; 90 + 30 and 120 + 40 for the field and 0 + 0; 10 + 4; 20 + 8; 30 + 12 and 40 + 16 for the packings) and four replications. The growth of the plants was observed during one year and the height of plants and the diameter of the trunks were evaluated each two months. The fertilization in covering in the field did not stimulate the growth of the plants. The substrate fertilization promoted significantly higher growth of plants in height and diameter of trunks in the period from September to May. The trunk diameter was more influenced, demonstrating that the secondary growth of the plant is more stimulated by the fertilization. The plant growth in the field was greater than the plant growth in individual packings.
