Examining life-course influences on chronic disease: the Ribeir?o Preto and S?o Luís birth cohort studies (Brazil)
Batty, G.D;
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X2007000900001
Abstract: more than any other low- and middle-income country, brazil has the longest research tradition of establishing, maintaining and exploiting birth cohort studies. this research pedigree is highlighted in the present issue of the brazilian journal of medical and biological research, which contains a series of twelve papers from the ribeir?o preto and s?o luis birth cohort studies from the southeast and northeast of brazil, respectively. the topics covered in this raft of reports vary and include predictors of perinatal health and maternal risk factors, early life determinants of cardiovascular risk factors in childhood and adolescence, use of health services, and a description of dietary characteristics of young adults, amongst other topics. there is also a guide to the background, objectives, sampling and protocols employed across these studies, which, together with similar pieces published in past issues of the brazilian journal, serve as a very useful starting point, particularly for potential collaborators. in the fervent hope that further follow-up of these cohorts will take place - we provide our own justification for cohort maintenance and extension in this issue - future data collection could include: genetic material, atherosclerosis, ascertained, for instance, by intima-media thickness, and iq testing in children - scores from which are emerging as potentially important predictors of adult health outcomes up to six decades later.
Kernaspekte van ’n model vir skoolsukses in arm gemeenskappe
G.D. Kamper
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 2006, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v71i2-4.251
Abstract: Key aspects of a model for school success in poor communities Some schools in impoverished communities are effective and successful in the face of the most difficult socio-economic circumstances and challenges. This phenomenon was investigated in a research project which had three phases. The first entailed a literature survey, culminating in a taxonomy of determinants of school success. The second phase consisted of the application of the taxonomy in field work in selected successful schools in impoverished communities. The third phase comprised interpretation of theoretical and empirical data, culminating in a model which depicts partnership as the central factor in all values and mechanisms pertaining to a successful school in an impoverished community. The model’s potential value is indicated, inter alia in guiding schools in impoverished communities towards meaningful self-assessment and change.
Die staatkundige erfenis en ontwikkeling van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika
G.D. Scholtz
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 1963, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v31i1.1453
G.D. Scholtz
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 1968, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v35i4.1391
Hierdie vraag is van sowel aardrykskundige as geskiedkundige belang.
Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies
G.D. Sebastiani
Reumatismo , 2011, DOI: 10.4081/reumatismo.2009.69
Abstract: Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) are predominantly IgG autoantibodies directed against constituents of primary granules of neutrophils and monocytes’ lysosomes. Although several antigenic targets have been identified, those ANCA directed to proteinase 3 or myeloperoxidase are clinically relevant, whereas the importance of other ANCA remains unknown. Both are strongly associated with small vessel vasculitides, the ANCA-associated vasculitides, which include Wegener’s granulomatosis, microscopic polyangiitis, and Churg-Strauss syndrome, and the localised forms of these diseases (eg, pauci-immune necrotising and crescentic glomerulonephritis). ANCA is a useful serological test to assist in diagnosis of small-vessel vasculitides. 85-95% of patients with Wegener’s granulomatosis, microscopic polyangiitis, and pauci-immune necrotising and crescentic glomerulonephritis have serum ANCA. ANCA directed to either proteinase 3 or myeloperoxidase are clinically relevant, yet the relevance of other ANCA remains unknown. Besides their diagnostic potential, ANCA might be valuable in disease monitoring. In addition, data seem to confirm the long-disputed pathogenic role of these antibodies. There is increasing evidence that myeloperoxidase- ANCA are directly involved in the pathogenesis of necrotizing vasculitis. This is less clear for proteinase 3-ANCA, markers for Wegener’s granulomatosis. With respect to proteinase 3-ANCA, complementary proteinase 3, a peptide translated from the antisense DNA strand of proteinase 3 and homologous to several microbial peptides, may be involved in induction of proteinase 3-antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies.

Abstract: On the basis of superelement model, Cahn's transformation kinetics theory and Scheil's additivity rule, the CCT diagrams and transformation kinetics in low carbon steel were predicted considering both undeformed and deformed conditions. The influence of deformation on phase equilibria and transformation incubation period was evaluated quantitatively. The recrystallization kinetics and the evolution of dislocation density were calculated during continuous cooling. The results show deformation considerably shortens transformation incubation period, accelerates transformation kinetics and makes CCT curve shift leftwards. The calculated CCT diagrams and the volume fraction of each phase are in good agreement with measurements.

Abstract: The plasticity map of 304HC stainless steel was determined by using tensile and compressive test. The effect of Cu on the hot plasticity of 304HC stainless steel was analyzed. The microstructure, inclusion and fracture surface were studied by using the method of optical microscopy, SEM,EDS and EPMA. The results showed that Cu has effect on the hot plasticity and the hotplasticity of 304HC stainless steel decrease with the increase of Cu content. The deformation temperature also hasmuch effect on the hot plasticity, the suitable deformation temperature are 1100-1200℃.The reason is that the brittle compounds were precipitated from austenite during cooling. These brittle compounds are Cu2S, Cu2O and PbCl etc.
