Establishment of IDF-curves for precipitation in the tropical area of Central Africa - comparison of techniques and results

Abstract: The establishment of Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves for precipitation remains a powerful tool in the risk analysis of natural hazards. Indeed the IDF-curves allow for the estimation of the return period of an observed rainfall event or conversely of the rainfall amount corresponding to a given return period for different aggregation times. There is a high need for IDF-curves in the tropical region of Central Africa but unfortunately the adequate long-term data sets are frequently not available. The present paper assesses IDF-curves for precipitation for three stations in Central Africa. More physically based models for the IDF-curves are proposed. The methodology used here has been advanced by Koutsoyiannis et al. (1998) and an inter-station and inter-technique comparison is being carried out. The IDF-curves for tropical Central Africa are an interesting tool to be used in sewer system design to combat the frequently occurring inundations in semi-urbanized and urbanized areas of the Kinshasa megapolis.

Abstract: merkel-cell carcinoma is a rare skin cancer of neuroendocrine origin, which has been described as the most aggressive skin malignancy. the tumor arises from the merkel cells, or skin pressure receptors. it has an infiltrative growth pattern and spreads by the lymphatic vessels and blood. it is similar to small cell lung carcinoma, with an intrinsic sensitivity to chemo-radiotherapy and a remarkable tendency to metastasize. the best treatment outcomes are obtained with early diagnosis and a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. a clinical case of merkel cell carcinoma of the face treated with surgery and radiotherapy is reported and the literature is reviewed

Abstract: The β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR) is expressed on numerous cell-types including airway smooth muscle cells and cardiomyocytes. Drugs (agonists or antagonists) acting at these receptors for treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and heart failure show substantial interindividual variability in response. The ADRB2 gene is polymorphic in noncoding and coding regions, but virtually all ADRB2 association studies have utilized the two common nonsynonymous coding SNPs, often reaching discrepant conclusions.

Abstract:

In the well-known superfamily of transforming growth factors beta (TGF-b), bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are one of the most compelling cytokines for their major role in regulation of cell growth and differentiation in both embryonic and adult tissues. This subfamily was first described for its ability of potentiating bone formation, but nowadays, the power of BMPs is well beyond the bone healing scope. Some of the BMPs have been well studied and described in the literature, but the BMP9 is still worthy of attention. It has been shown by many authors that it is the most potent osteogenic BMP. Moreover, it has been described as one of the rare circulating BMPs. In this paper, we will review the recent literature on BMP9 and the different avenues for future research in that field. Our primary scope is to review its relation to bone formation and to elaborate on the available literature on other systems.

Abstract:
Hydrogels based on acrylamide (AA) and sodium methacrylate (NMA) as ionic monomer were prepared by solution polymerization using N,N’-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBA) or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGMA) as crosslinkers and Ammonium Persulfate (APS) and N,N,N’,N’-Te-tramethyl-ethylenediamine (TMEDA) as initiators. Swelling behavior was greatly affected by NMA content near phase transition. Increasing ionic monomer concentration compared to total monomer one led to high expansion in water, oscillating around 285 g/g for MBA and 325 g/g for EGMA crosslinker, above 20% of NMA. Dynamic Light Scattering experiments were performed and, for both crosslinkers, the dynamic correlation length (ξ) decreased with increasing NMA content, contributing to diminish hydrogels spatial inhomogeneities.

Abstract: This paper investigates some of the complexities in the relationship between philosophy and medicine in ancient Greece. Some philosophers cite medicine as an analogue to philosophy, for instance in connection with the claim that there can be objective experts to whom mere lay people should defer. Some doctors, however, object to what they represent as the dogmatic, 'a priori', strands of philosophical inquiry and develop an alternative, empiricist, epistemology and methodology. Recollection and experience are invoked in strikingly divergent ways as the debate within and between different philosophical and medical traditions developed. En este trabajo se investigan algunas de las complejidades de la relación entre la filosofía y la medicina en la antigua Grecia. Algunos filósofos citan la medicina como análoga de la filosofía, por ejemplo en conexión con la afirmación de que puede haber expertos objetivos a quienes los meros profanos deben someterse. Algunos médicos, sin embargo, ponen objeciones a lo que representan como líneas dogmáticas, apriorísticas, de la indagación filosófica, y desarrollan una epistemología y una metodología alternativas de carácter empírico. Abstract: We answer a number of questions relating to the pseudo-Smarandache function Z(n). We show that the ratio of consecutive values $Z(n+1)/Z(n)$ and $Z(n-1)/Z(n)$ are unbounded; that $Z(2n)/Z(n)$ is unbounded; that $n/Z(n)$ takes every integer value infinitely often; and that the series $\sum_n 1/Z(n)^\alpha$ is convergent for any $\alpha > 1$.

Abstract:

Neutral isotopes and ions of H, He and Li define the chemistry of the early universe by collisional and radiative process, where under low temperature and radiation regime, only neutral species were essential in the cooling mass that gave origin to the first proto star structures. Nevertheless, up to now, in every kinetic model Li is permanently discarded from fundamental reactions due to its extremely low density. Contrarily to these previous models we have developed a novel kinetic model based on two consecutive reactions of Li and LiH with H, in order to generate a recursive process that fit well H2 production to temperatures as low as 200 K, according to the cosmological time at the end of the dark epoch. Our results show how Li and LiH merge as first catalyzers of the H to H2 chemical reaction and permit us to explain the expected abundance of H2 as the main coolant in the early universe as well as in cold regions of the cosmos.

Abstract: Air flow in nose and sinuses is studied by means of a simple model based on the steady-state ideal fluid flow assumption and repeated use of Bernoulli’s equation. In particular, by describing flow of air drawn in through the vestibulumnasi during inspiration, we investigate how ventilation of the maxillary sinus is affected by surgical removal of part of the lateral walls of the nasal cavity close to the ostiummeatal complex. We find that, according to the model proposed, removal of tissues from this inner part of the nasal cavity may cause a decrease of the flux rate from the maxillary sinus.
