Measurement of the Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton

Abstract: The Compton scattering cross section on the proton has been measured at laboratory angles of 90$^\circ$ and 135$^\circ$ using tagged photons in the energy range 70--100 MeV and simultaneously using untagged photons in the range 100--148~MeV. With the aid of dispersion relations, these cross sections were used to extract the electric and magnetic polarizabilities, $\bar{\alpha}$ and $\bar{\beta}$ respectively, of the proton. We find $$\bar{\alpha}+\bar{\beta} = ( 15.0 \pm 2.9 \pm 1.1 \pm 0.4 ) \times 10^{-4} \: {\rm fm}^3,$$ in agreement with a model-independent dispersion sum rule, and $$\bar{\alpha}-\bar{\beta} = ( 10.8 \pm 1.1 \pm 1.4 \pm 1.0 ) \times 10^{-4} \: {\rm fm}^3,$$ where the errors shown are statistical, systematic, and model-dependent, respectively. A comparison with previous experiments is given and global values for the polarizabilities are extracted.

Abstract: the occurrence of different virulence factors and o157:h7 serotype investigation in 120 escherichia coli strains isolated from clinical (80 cases) and subclinical (40 cases) bovine mastitis was evaluated. alpha-haemolysin was detected in 8 (6.7%) strains (5 clinical and 3 subclinical cases). none strain showed enterohaemolysin production. e. coli growth under iron restriction conditions (siderophores production) was observed in 11 (9.2%) strains (7 clinical and 4 subclinical cases). sta enterotoxin was detected in 2 (1.7%) strains from subclinical cases. cytotoxic effect in vero cells compatible with verotoxin-vt production was observed in 5 (4.2%) strains (2 clinical and 3 subclinical cases). one strain (0.8%) isolated from clinical mastitis showed cytophatic effect in vero cells compatible with cytotoxic-necrotic-factor production. none strain showed non-sorbitol fermenting colonies using sorbitol macconkey agar and agglutination with specific anti-sera for e. coli o157:h7 serotype investigation. polymixin b (97.5%) and norfloxacin (95.8%) were the most effective drugs. multiple-drug resistance for 2 or more antimicrobials was observed in 24 (20.0%) strains, mainly with use of ampicillin and ceftiofur.

Abstract: frictional contact interfaces have to be modeled in practice when industrial problems such as metal forming operations, crashworthiness, and so on, have to be simulated. usually a coulomb model is used in order to describe the constitutive law for the frictional case. following a standard non associated plasticity approach to coulomb law a non-symmetric tangent operator results, and so a non-symmetric solver has to be used in order to take full advantage of consistent operators. with respect to symmetric ones, these non-symmetric operators lead to prohibitive computational times. however, in practice different schemes have been proposed in order to recover the symmetric operator, and consequently, use a symmetric solver. in this work an alternative approach based on an idea due to garcía garino and oliver (1992) is defined in order to avoid to deal with non-symmetric solvers and thus save a large amount of computational time, which renders the computational simulation more attractive to industry. applications to metal forming simulations and crashworthiness analysis are considered.

Abstract: We report a helicity analysis of subthreshold rho production on 2H and 12C nuclei at low photoproduction energies and large |t|. The results are indicative of a large longitudinal rho polarization (l=1, m=0) and are consistent with a strong helicity-flip mechanism of rho production. The analysis is model-independent and supports the large mass shift reported from the earlier 3He experiments.
In-Medium rho^0 Spectral Function Study via the 2H, 3He, 12C(gamma,pi+pi-) Reaction

Abstract: We report a helicity analysis of sub-threshold rho^0 production on 2H, 3He and 12C at low photo-production energies. The results are indicative of a large longitudinal rho^0 polarization (l=1, m=0) and are consistent with a strong helicity-flip production mechanism. This signature is used to extract in-medium rho^0_L invariant mass distributions for all three nuclei in a manner which is less model-dependent than previous measurements. The results are compared to kinematic and phenomenological models of the rho^0 spectral function. The 2H and 3He data distributions support the role of N*(1520) excitation in shaping the in-medium rho^0_L invariant mass distribution, while the 12C distributions are consistent with quasi-free rho^0_L production. The data support an in-medium modification of the rho^0_L invariant mass distribution.

Abstract: A large reduction of the rho^0 mass in the nuclear medium is reported, inferred from dipion photoproduction spectra in the 1 GeV region, for the reaction 3He(gamma,pi+ pi-)X with a 10% duty factor tagged-photon beam and the TAGX multi-particle spectrometer. The energy range covered (800 < E(gamma) < 1120 MeV) lies mostly below the free rho^0 production threshold, a region which is believed sensitive to modifications of light vector-meson properties at nuclear-matter densities. The rho^0 masses extracted from the MC fitting of the data, m*(rho^0) = 642 +/- 40, 669 +/- 32, and 682 +/- 56 MeV/c^2 for E(gamma) in the 800-880, 880-960, and 960-1040 MeV regions respectively, are independently corroborated by a measured, assumption-free, kinematical observable. This mass shift, far exceeding current mean-field driven theoretical predictions, may be suggestive of rho^0 decay within the range of the nucleonic field.

Abstract: the objective of this paper is to report the prevalence and distribution of lesions of caseous lymphadenitis (cl) in hair sheep slaughtered in an abattoir in the state of paraíba, northeastern brazil. from 1,466 sheep slaughtered, 236 (15.9%) had gross lesions similar to that of cl. the prevalence was higher in females, 17.9% (135/754), than in males, 13.8% (101/732). ninety seven (36.3%) out of 268 lesions were localized in the prescapular lymph node, 22.4% (60/268) in the parotideal, and 20.9% (56/268) in the prefemoral. only 70 (26.1%) out of 268 lesions suggestive of cl were detected during ante mortem examination. caseous lymphadenitis-like lesions were observed in all flocks examined from different municipalities in the states of paraíba, pernambuco and bahia. cultures and histologic examination were performed in samples from 51 lesions. corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was isolated in 74.5% (43/51) samples, staphylococcus aureus in 7.8% (4/51) samples, escherichia coli in 2% (1/51), and in 5.9% (3/51) samples cultures were negative. histologic findings in 11 lymph nodes showed all characteristic lesions of caseous lymphadenitis: central area of necrosis formed by concentric lamellae, with large bacterial colonies and mineralization, surrounded by an inflammatory exudate with epithelioid macrophages and few neutrophils; lymphocytes and plasma cells were observed in the next layer, and fibrous tissue was surrounding the whole lesion. lesions in the other 32 lymph nodes showed most, but not all lesions characteristic of the disease. giant cells were observed in 21 lymph nodes. histologic lesions in lymph nodes from which s. aureus was isolated were similar as those of cl. these findings suggest that cl lesions are characteristic, but not pathognogmonic, because they can be confused with lesions caused by other pyogenic bacteria or tuberculosis; therefore bacteriologic examination is necessary for the diagnosis of the disease.
