“Science Pop-Tunes”: A Teaching Strategy in Enhancing Students’ Academic Performance  [PDF]
Froilan Alex A. Cuevas
Open Access Library Journal (OALib Journal) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/oalib.1105219
Abstract:
The study is all about incorporating music (science pop-tunes) in teaching science subject and observing its effect on the academic performance of the participants. 44 grade 9 pupils divided into control and experimental groups participated in the study. The study used quasi-experimental research design and data retrieval technique. Data analysis involved the use of frequency count, mean, standard deviation and t-test. Results revealed that the pretests of both groups were the same and the test of difference was found not significant. On the contrary, the result of post-test of both groups yielded gain scores to both group of participants. However, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean in the gain score. The result exhibited that the intervention significantly improved the academic performance of the science students. Hence, teaching science lessons to pupils through the traditional learning method had a minimal effect in improving pupil’s academic performance while integrating science pop-tunes combo during the course of instruction significantly dis-played better academic performance.

Tuberculosis Research and Treatment , 2010, DOI: 10.1155/2010/241659
Abstract: Objective. To describe the yield of smear-microscopy and radiological findings by male and female patients with symptoms of tuberculosis in Abuja, Nigeria. Methods. Patients ≥15 years old with cough for >3 weeks submitted 3 sputum samples for smear microscopy. One specimen was cultured using MGIT-960. All patients had lung X-rays and screened for HIV. Results. were more likely to be smear-positive than females (262/774 [34%] and 137/547 [25%], <.01), but similar proportions of males and females were culture-positive (437/691 [63%] and 294/495 [59%], =.09). 317/626 (50.6%) males and 249/419 (59.4%) females were HIV-positive (<.005). Among culture-positives patients, HIV-infected males were less likely to have positive smears than HIV-negative males (49.2% versus 66%, =.001). Among females, smear positivity did not vary with HIV (46.4% for HIV-positive and 52.9% for HIV-negative, =.38). Of 274 culture-confirmed TB cases, 226 (82.5%) had cavities, and 271 (99%) had ≥1 lung areas affected. HIV-positive males were more likely to have lung cavities than HIV-positive females (85% versus 69%, <.04) and to have ≥3 lung areas affected (=.03). Conclusion. Differences in the yield of smear-microscopy, culture and X-rays on presentation are due to several factors including HIV coinfection and gender.
Endoscopic management of esophageal varices
Joaquin Poza Cordon,Consuelo Froilan Torres,Aurora Burgos García,Francisco Gea Rodriguez
World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy , 2012, DOI: 10.4253/wjge.v4.i7.312
Abstract: The rupture of gastric varices results in variceal hemorrhage, which is one the most lethal complications of cirrhosis. Endoscopic therapies for varices aim to reduce variceal wall tension by obliteration of the varix. The two principal methods available for esophageal varices are endoscopic sclerotherapy (EST) and band ligation (EBL). The advantages of EST are that it is cheap and easy to use, and the injection catheter fits through the working channel of a diagnostic gastroscope. Endoscopic variceal ligation obliterates varices by causing mechanical strangulation with rubber bands. The following review aims to describe the utility of EBL and EST in different situations, such as acute bleeding, primary and secondary prophylaxis

Nimotuzumab in Treatment of Infiltrating Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Tongue  [PDF]
Alex A. Prasad
Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2015.62015
Abstract:

A 50-year male patient presented to outpatient department with a mass on tongue associated with pain. A plain computerised tomography scan done on 17/01/13 revealed mild growth on lateral border of tongue with an enlarged jugulo-digastric lymph node measuring 1.8?×?1 cm. Excision of tongue was done and sent for histopathological examination which revealed infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma. The patient was treated with 2 cycles of Induction chemotherapy with cisplatin and paclitaxel administered in q3w schedule. Induction chemotherapy was followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy with 6 cycles of nimotuzumab 200 mg and cisplatin 20 mg given weekly along with 60 gy/30 fractions of radiation using IMRT. Latest CT scan done on 20/01/2014 revealed no evidence of disease (NED).

The Case of Nonzero Initial Conditions in the Evolution of the Charge Density Distribution Function for a Spherically Symmetric System  [PDF]

Journal of Applied Mathematics and Physics (JAMP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jamp.2014.27057
Abstract:

We explored the Cauchy problem for the evolution of the charge density distribution function for a spherically symmetric system with nonzero initial conditions. In our model, the evolution of the charge density distribution function is simulated for the case of a non-uniform charged sphere. The initial speed of the system is nonzero. The solution breaks down into two components: the first one describes the system’s motion as a whole and the second describes the process of the evolution of the charge density function under the influence of its own electric field in the center-of-mass system. In this paper we considered the characteristic features of the implementation of a difference scheme for numerical simulation. We also illustrate the process of “scattering” of a moving charged system under the influence of its own electric field on the basis of the solution of the Cauchy problem for vector functions of the electric field and vector velocity field of a charged medium.

Seed germination of species of the Juan Fernández archipiélago under laboratory conditions
Cuevas,Jaime G; Figueroa,Javier A;
Gayana. Botánica , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-66432007000100007
Abstract: the juan fernández islands contain one of the world's most interesting floras. however, their conservation status is fragile due to direct and indirect human activities. with the aim of contributing to the conservation of the native species of these islands, germination trials have been performed under laboratory conditions. we studied the germination patterns and characteristics of 25 taxa of the archipelago, at temperatures between 15°c and 25°c, with 12.5 h. of photoperiod. thirty-five percent of the studied species germinated immediately (within the first month after sowing), while 50% had a delayed germination. three species did not germinate. regarding the germination pattern, nine taxa (53%) germinated synchronously (3 90% of seeds germinated within a month after the first germination), while the remaining 47% germinated asynchronously. most species showed a high germinative potential (350% of germination). generally, the germination results were good for most species assayed, with few species requiring special treatments as scarification. for each species, the pre-germinative treatments, germination characteristics and patterns are detailed and discussed in relation to other published antecedents
