Frederico Luiz Funari, Augusto José Pereira Filho
Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2014.69076
Abstract:

The aim of this work was to characterize and to bring into relationship of the net radiation with the latent heat flux equivalent to water (mm) in a patch of Atlantic Forest within the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo (RMSP). The estimation of the latent heat flux (LE) was made by the energy balance equation with the Bowen ratio. Measurements of net radiation and psychometrics gradients were made. Soil heat flux (G) was measured by temperature sensors in two depths. Measurements were made at Park of Science and Technology of Sao Paulo University (CIENTEC), Sao Paulo, Brazil, between 2011 and 2013. Results indicated that evapotranspiration varies seasonally and the amount of water evaporated exceeds 3.0 mm·day-1 in spring/summer and in autumn/winter the amount is approximately 1.0 mm·day-1. The evapotranspiration is increased under RMSP urban climate conditions with higher air temperature and lower moisture especially in summer season.

Nova Economia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-63512007000200001
Abstract: high levels of heterogeneity and instability characterize the brazilian labor market. in addition, the growth of the percentage of women in the labor force is especially due to the fact that more married women are working, which means that female role in families and society has been undergoing changes. this paper investigates the relationship among occupational and non-occupational characteristics of the "head of the family" and his "spouse" as a way to obtain inferences about family well-being. the data-base used is the "occupational mobility survey" linked to the "employment and unemployment survey", which were carried out in the s?o paulo metropolitan area from april to december 2001. typologies were created by applying the "grade of membership", a method that deals better with heterogeneity. a high degree of heterogeneity of marriages was found. age, education and the spouses' economic strategies, especially related to the wife's labor force participation, make up the determinant factors to distinguish the couples.

International Journal of Drug Discovery , 2011,
Abstract: Candidiasis is recognized worldwide as an opportunistic infection. The severities of the infection increase inimmunosuppression conditions with possible occurrence of visceral mycoses and sometimes are widespread and systemic.Increased resistance in strains of Candida albicans is a major obstacle to antifungal therapy. The aim of this study was tocorrelate the chemical structure of compounds with experimental data from biological activity anti-Candida albicans. Weperformed classical QSAR for a series of twenty derivatives of ketone -β unsaturated against resistant strains of Candidaalbicans. Ninety-four descriptors were calculated and multiparameter model was obtained through Partial Least Squares(PLS) method. The results showed that thermodynamic, dimensional and steric parameters are important in elucidating ofaction mechanism compounds. Four descriptors (molar refractivity, ionization potential, molecular length and Verloop B4)were selected and good model (n= 20; R2 = 0.776; SEC = 0.229; F(3,16) = 14.172; Q2LOO = 0.609; SEV = 0.295; Q2pred = 0.709;SEP = 0.091; k = 0.709; k’ = 1.00; R20 – R’20 = 0.0009) was built with three latent variables describing 96.14% of the originalinformation. Leave-N-out cross validation and Y-randomization analysis were performed in order to confirm the robustness ofthe model. The proposed model may provide a better understanding of the anti-Candida albicans activity of chalcones and canbe used as guidance for proposition of new chemopreventive agents
On the Bump Tests of Cracked Shafts Using Acoustic Emission Techniques  [PDF]
Gilberto Luiz S. Pimentel-Junior, Frederico B. Oliveira, Marco Tulio C. Faria
Engineering (ENG) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2016.89053
Abstract: An investigation about the application of Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques to analyze the dynamic response of different cracked shafts rendered in bump tests is presented in this work. The experimental apparatus devised for this work complies of six shafts with different transverse crack sizes and a high-frequency data acquisition system. The AE signals generated in the bump tests performed on the different cracked shafts are captured by a wideband AE transducer. Those signals are treated by using statistical moments, wavelet transforms, and frequency- and time-domain procedures. A transverse crack of predetermined depth is etched into each shaft. The experimental results show that the values of kurtosis and skewness estimated for the AE signals can be used to identify the crack size.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492008000500023
Abstract: to report a case of an optic nerve sheath meningioma located at the optic canal area mimicking the progression of a glaucomatous axonal damage. a 60-year-old female patient developed progressive visual field loss and enlargement of the optic disc cup in the left eye while in treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma. because of the rapid progression of axonal loss, the asymmetry of the visual field defect and the fact that intraocular pressure had been under control, a compressive optic neuropathy was suspected. a computerized tomography scan of the orbit was normal but a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an optic nerve sheath meningioma located at the optic canal area. compressive lesions of the anterior visual pathways are uncommon causes of optic disc cupping but should be considered in patients suspected of or undergoing treatment for glaucoma that present with atypical progression of visual loss.
Dynamics of microalgal communities in the water-column/sediment interface of the inner shelf off Parana State, Southern Brazil

Brazilian Journal of Oceanography , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-87592004000300002
Abstract: the composition and biomass of the microalgal community at the water-column/sediment interface on the continental shelf off parana state (brazil) were studied every 2 months during 1999. samples for cell identification and determination of chlorophyll a were taken from the interface layer and at discrete depths up to 4 m above the sediment. results showed a community mainly formed by benthic and planktonic diatoms >30 μm, benthic diatoms <30 μm and cyanobacteria. cell densities were generally higher at the interface layer. resuspension and sedimentation events seemed to be a paramount factor regulating the composition and biomass of these communities, and affected differently cells of different size classes. cells >30 μm, which accounted for most of the pigment biomass, were resuspended from the interface after turbulent periods, and may take advantage of calm periods to stay and grow at the interface. small benthic diatoms were more susceptible to wind-induced turbulence occurring in higher densities in the water column just above the water-sediment interface. a cyanobacterial bloom (trichodesmiun) was observed at these bottom layers in the spring-summer periods.

Abstract: nowadays the city of ouro preto is faced with large problems relating to its expansion and urban increase, due to the lack of places with adequate geothecnical conditions for building. the city has been facing the consequences of inadequate occupation of the urban environment due to excessive inhabitation, lack of areas for urban expansion and the concentration of poor people around the rivers, brooks and the surroundings. even in the central area, which is occupied by people with good social-economical conditions, the neglect of the risk of landslides is evident. this paper discusses this question, presenting in particular the problem of occupation of morro do curral hill.
Aspectos oftalmológicos da síndrome da hipertens?o intracraniana idiopática (pseudotumor cerebral)
Monteiro, Mário Luiz Ribeiro;Moura, Frederico Castelo;
Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72802008000400008
Abstract: pseudotumor cerebri is a syndrome of increased intra-cranial pressure without a space-occupying lesion or ventriculomegaly in a patient with normal level of conscience and normal cerebrospinal fluid constitution. the terminology for the disorder has changed over the years in accordance with advances in diagnostic technology and insights into the disease process. when no secondary cause is identified, the syndrome is termed idiopathic intracranial hypertension. patients are not uncommonly seen by ophthamologists since they present with papiledema, double vision and visual loss, a frequently severe and irreversible complication. in this paper we review the diagnostic criteria and the ophthalmic manifestations of this condition. we also emphasize the importance of the ophthalmlogist in the diagnosis and monitoring of visual function during the medical treatment of this condition as well as in the in the event of surgical treatment performed using optic nerve sheath decompression.
