Using a geographical information system to plan a malaria control programme in South Africa

Abstract: introduction: sustainable control of malaria in sub-saharan africa is jeopardized by dwindling public health resources resulting from competing health priorities that include an overwhelming acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (aids) epidemic. in mpumalanga province, south africa, rational planning has historically been hampered by a case surveillance system for malaria that only provided estimates of risk at the magisterial district level (a subdivision of a province). methods: to better map control programme activities to their geographical location, the malaria notification system was overhauled and a geographical information system implemented. the introduction of a simplified notification form used only for malaria and a carefully monitored notification system provided the good quality data necessary to support an effective geographical information system. results: the geographical information system displays data on malaria cases at a village or town level and has proved valuable in stratifying malaria risk within those magisterial districts at highest risk, barberton and nkomazi. the conspicuous west-to-east gradient, in which the risk rises sharply towards the mozambican border (relative risk = 4.12, 95% confidence interval = 3.88-4.46 when the malaria risk within 5 km of the border was compared with the remaining areas in these two districts), allowed development of a targeted approach to control. discussion: the geographical information system for malaria was enormously valuable in enabling malaria risk at town and village level to be shown. matching malaria control measures to specific strata of endemic malaria has provided the opportunity for more efficient malaria control in mpumalanga province.
The disappearance of the progenitor of SN 2012aw in late-time imaging

Abstract: We present new late-time near-infrared imaging of the site of the nearby core-collapse supernova SN 2012aw, confirming the disappearance of the point source identified by Fraser et al. (2012) and Van Dyk et al. (2012) as a candidate progenitor in both J and Ks filters. We re-measure the progenitor photometry, and find that both the J and Ks magnitudes of the source are consistent with those quoted in the literature. We also recover a marginal detection of the progenitor in H-band, for which we measure H=19.67+/-0.40 mag. Comparing the luminosity of the progenitor to stellar evolutionary models, SN 2012aw appears to have resulted from the explosion of a 12.5+/-1.5 Msun red supergiant.
Rotated and Scaled Alamouti Coding

Abstract: Repetition-based retransmission is used in Alamouti-modulation [1998] for $2\times 2$ MIMO systems. We propose to use instead of ordinary repetition so-called "scaled repetition" together with rotation. It is shown that the rotated and scaled Alamouti code has a hard-decision performance which is only slightly worse than that of the Golden code [2005], the best known $2\times 2$ space-time code. Decoding the Golden code requires an exhaustive search over all codewords, while our rotated and scaled Alamouti code can be decoded with an acceptable complexity however.
Blood Volume Status in Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Relation to Complaints  [PDF]

Abstract: Four studies have compared a possible decrease in circulating blood volume in Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) patients when compared to a healthy population. A more recent study has proven a correlation between RBC volume and OI in chronic OI patients without being diagnosed ME/CFS. The aim of the present study was to relate measured blood, RBC and plasma volumes (absolute and percent normalized) with the orthostatic intolerance complaints in ME/CFS patients. In the included 11 female ME/CFS patients, percentage decrease in normalized blood, RBC and plasma volume was similar for all three components: 83% ± 12%, 83% ± 12% and 83% ± 11%, respectively. In patients with a clinical suspicion of OI (n = 7) all 3 volume components were significantly lower compared to patients without clinical suspicion of OI (n = 4). The difference percentage to normalized Blood volume was 77(7) vs 94(10) (p-value < 0.02), difference percentage to normalized RBC volume was 76(7) vs 96(10) (p-value < 0.01) and difference percentage to normalized plasma volume was 77(7) vs 93(10) (p-value < 0.05) in OI present versus absent. Plasma volumes were plotted against RBC volumes: the relation found was RBC volume = 0.99* Plasma volume + 1.55; p < 0.001; r = 0.90. In line with literature data, this pilot study shows that total blood volume and its components: RBC and plasma volume may be reduced in ME/CFS patients, especially in the presence of a clinical suspicion of OI.

Abstract: Aside from wound healing and certain pathological processes, including neoplasia, the vascular system in the adult is generally quiescent. An exception takes place in the ovaries where there is intense angiogenesis and increased permeability of blood vessels during follicular development, ovulation and subsequent formation of the corpus luteum. Furthermore, angiogenesis is regulated independently within each individual follicle and depending on the extent of the vascular plexus and permeability of vessels, the supply of large molecular weight tropic factors, precursors and lipids can be controlled. This indicates the follicular vasculature could be intimately involved in the processes of follicular selection, dominance and atresia.It is likely that some types of infertility are associated with disturbance of follicular angiogenesis resulting in inadequate development. In polycystic ovarian syndrome there is excessive angiogenesis while ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHHS) is associated with an increase in capillary permeability. Thus, an understanding of the mechanisms of follicular angiogenesis and its regulation may lead to therapies for controlling inappropriate follicle development secondary to decreased or enhanced angiogenesis. The identification of putative angiogenic factors in the ovary and development of specific agonists or antagonists of angiogenic molecules, together with their application in animal models, presents novel opportunities to validate their physiological role in vivo. This review outlines the methods that are being used to study changes in the follicular vasculature, address the work on some of the angiogenic factors which have been studied in the ovary and seem of particular interest at this time, and examines the effects of manipulation of these factors on follicular angiogenesis and development in vivo.While primordial and primary follicles receive nutrients and oxygen by passive diffusion from stromal blood vessels, follicular growt

Abstract: The paper deals with topologically trivial Legendrian knots in tight and overtwisted contact 3-manifolds. The first part contains a thorough exposition of the proof of the classification of topologically trivial Legendrian knots (i.e. Legendrian knots bounding embedded 2-disks) in tight contact 3-manifolds. This part was essentially written more than 10 years ago, but only a short version, without the detailed proofs, was published (in CRM Proc. Lecture Notes, Vol. 15, 1998). That paper also briefly discussed the overtwisted case. The final part of the present paper contains a more systematic discussion of Legendrian knots in overtwisted contact manifolds, and in particular, gives the coarse classification (i.e. classification up to a global contactomorphism) of topologically trivial Legendrian knots in overtwisted contact S^3.
On the packing dimension of box-like self-affine sets in the plane

Abstract: We consider a class of planar self-affine sets which we call "box-like". A box-like self-affine set is the attractor of an iterated function system (IFS) of affine maps where the image of the unit square, [0,1]^2, under arbitrary compositions of the maps is a rectangle with sides parallel to the axes. This class contains the Bedford-McMullen carpets and the generalisations thereof considered by Lalley-Gatzouras, Bara\'nski and Feng-Wang as well as many other sets. In particular, we allow the mappings in the IFS to have non-trivial rotational and reflectional components. Assuming a rectangular open set condition, we compute the packing and box-counting dimensions by means of a pressure type formula based on the singular values of the maps.
Inhomogeneous self-similar sets and box dimensions

Abstract: We investigate the box dimensions of inhomogeneous self-similar sets. Firstly, we extend some results of Olsen and Snigireva by computing the upper box dimensions assuming some mild separation conditions. Secondly, we investigate the more difficult problem of computing the lower box dimension. We give some non-trivial bounds and provide examples to show that lower box dimension behaves much more strangely than the upper box dimension, Hausdorff dimension and packing dimension.
