Efeitos diretos, indiretos e tardios: trajetórias da transmiss?o intergeracional da participa??o política
Fuks, Mario;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452011000200006
Abstract: the article presents a model to explain the process through which young people become active citizens. we will see that it occurs in two complementary ways. the first is the immediate transmission, though largely driven by indirect effects, of participatory routines. the second depends on a long process, generating participation as a late effect. the study shows that political participation of parents is the most effective way to "teach" children how to be participative. as regards socioeconomic background, it has an indirect effect on participation, creating a more or less favorable condition for the parents' political engagement. overall, the data show an association between the intergenerational reproduction of social inequality and political inequality.
Arenas de A??o e Debate Públicos: Conflitos Ambientais e a Emergência do Meio Ambiente enquanto Problema Social no Rio de Janeiro
Fuks, Mario;
Dados , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52581998000100003
Abstract: based on analysis of legal disputes and of disagreements surrounding the definition of public matters and social issues, the article investigates how the question of the environment is being framed as a social issue in rio de janeiro. after tracing the profile of legal cases, the text examines the environmental arguments developed within the context of these conflicts. a description of "interpretive packages" put forward by the actors involved in the disputes serves as basis for an inventory of competing views of the environment expressed in the arenas of public action and debate in rio.
Atitudes, cogni??o e participa??o política: padr?es de influência dos ambientes de socializa??o sobre o perfil político dos jovens
Fuks, Mario;
Opini?o Pública , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-62762012000100005
Abstract: the debate about the role of socialization in the acquisition of political knowledge, attitudes and participation of young people reminds us constantly that the family and school environments are the crucial factor in this process. but this does not answer a number of questions. one of them is the interaction between the various factors that comprise these environments and the specific mechanisms through which they generate effects on the political profile of young people. this dynamic is the focus of this article and our main argument is that it creates distinct patterns of influence of these environments, depending on the dimension considered. our analyzes are based on data from a survey conducted in 2008 with high school students of the city of belo horizonte, brazil.
QCD-resummation and non-minimal flavour-violation for supersymmetric particle production at hadron colliders
Fuks, Benjamin
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2007,
Abstract: Cross sections for supersymmetric particles production at hadron colliders have been extensively studied in the past at leading order and also at next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD. The radiative corrections include large logarithms which have to be resummed to all orders in the strong coupling constant in order to get reliable perturbative results. In this work, we perform a first and extensive study of the resummation effects for supersymmetric particle pair production at hadron colliders. We focus on Drell-Yan like slepton-pair and slepton-sneutrino associated production in minimal supergravity and gauge-mediated supersymmetry-breaking scenarios, and present accurate transverse-momentum and invariant-mass distributions, as well as total cross sections. In non-minimal supersymmetric models, novel effects of flavour violation may occur. In this case, the flavour structure in the squark sector cannot be directly deduced from the trilinear Yukawa couplings of the fermion and Higgs supermultiplets. We perform a precise numerical analysis of the experimentally allowed parameter space in the case of minimal supergravity scenarios with non-minimal flavour violation, looking for regions allowed by low-energy, electroweak precision, and cosmological data. Leading order cross sections for the production of squarks and gauginos at hadron colliders are implemented in a flexible computer program, allowing us to study in detail the dependence of these cross sections on flavour violation.
Transverse-momentum, threshold and joint resummations for slepton pair production at hadron colliders
Fuks, Benjamin
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2007,
Abstract: We present precision calculations of the transverse-momentum spectrum and the invariant-mass distribution for slepton pair production at hadron colliders. We implement the transverse-momentum, threshold and joint resummation formalisms at the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and consistently match the obtained result with the pure perturbative result at the first order in the strong coupling constant, i.e. at order alpha_s. We give numerical predictions for selectron and stau pair production, and compare the various resummed cross sections with the perturbative result.

Non-deterministic density classification with diffusive probabilistic cellular automata
Henryk Fuks
Physics , 2003, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.66.066106
Abstract: We present a probabilistic cellular automaton (CA) with two absorbing states which performs classification of binary strings in a non-deterministic sense. In a system evolving under this CA rule, empty sites become occupied with a probability proportional to the number of occupied sites in the neighborhood, while occupied sites become empty with a probability proportional to the number of empty sites in the neighborhood. The probability that all sites become eventually occupied is equal to the density of occupied sites in the initial string.
Solution of the Density Classification Problem with Two Cellular Automata Rules
Henryk Fuks
Physics , 1997, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.55.R2081
Abstract: Recently, Land and Belew [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 5148 (1995)] have shown that no one-dimensional two-state cellular automaton which classifies binary strings according to their densities of 1's and 0's can be constructed. We show that a pair of elementary rules, namely the ``traffic rule'' 184 and the ``majority rule'' 232, performs the task perfectly. This solution employs the second order phase transition between the freely moving phase and the jammed phase occurring in rule 184. We present exact calculations of the order parameter in this transition using the method of preimage counting.
A class of cellular automata equivalent to deterministic particle systems
Henryk Fuks
Physics , 2002,
Abstract: We demonstrate that a local mapping f in a space of bisequences over {0,1} which conserves the number of nonzero sites can be viewed as a deterministic particle system evolving according to a local mapping in a space of increasing bisequences over Z. We present an algorithm for determination of the local mapping in the space of particle coordinates corresponding to the local mapping f.
Opportunities with top quarks at future circular colliders
Benjamin Fuks
Physics , 2014,
Abstract: We describe various studies relevant for top physics at future circular collider projects currently under discussion. We show how highly-massive top-antitop systems produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV could be observed and employed for constraining top dipole moments, investigate the reach of future proton-proton and electron-positron machines to top flavor-changing neutral interactions, and discuss top parton densities.
