Revista Colombiana de Estadística , 2006,
Abstract: we propose a methodology to estimate missing information in mixed cell means models. this methodology improves on that melo & melo (2005), which is based on the methods of maximum likelihood estimation and covariate proposed by bartlett (1937), and reduces the correlation between the observed and estimated information. once the imputation of the missing information is done, we suggest a way to perform the analysis of variance in models without interaction, by generating a weighted test for the fixed and random effects involved in the model.

Revista de Nutri??o , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-52732007000600007
Abstract: objective: the objective of this paper is to critically identify and analyze the many concepts that professors of the subject nutrition education have of practice and how they understand the theory-practice relationship. methods: the study was done in universities and colleges of the state of s?o paulo, brazil, that have been registered at the ministry of education since 1999. with this information, professors of the subject nutrition education were interviewed in all these institutions totaling 11 individuals. the results were analyzed qualitatively, using the hermeneutic-dialectic method. results: the professors had similar opinions regarding the importance of practice; however what practice meant in nutrition education varied. some consider that practical activities are enough for the formation of the student and do not search theoretical fundamentals in social and human sciences. we also observed that practice was overvalued in relation to theory. all these aspects contribute to compromise the effectiveness of the theory-practice relationship. conclusion: it is up to the graduation courses and the government departments that surveil education to discuss the education of the professors, the concepts behind practical activities and more effective ways to work the dialectics between practice and theory. it is necessary to stimulate, from the beginning of the graduation course, the articulation between theory and practice in order to allow the students to contextualize the acquisition of knowledge and form social and ethical compromises.

Crosstalk between Immune Cells and Adipocytes Requires Both Paracrine Factors and Cell Contact to Modify Cytokine Secretion

PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0077306
Abstract: Increased adiposity results in a heightened infiltration of immune cells into fat depots, which in turn generates a pro-inflammatory phenotype in obese individuals. To better understand the causal factors that establish this pro-inflammatory profile, we examined events leading to crosstalk between adipocytes and immune cells. Using isolated spleen-derived immune cells, stimulated with LPS, together with cultured adipocytes, we differentiated the effects of paracrine factors and cell-cell contact on TNFα, IL-6 and MCP-1 secretion levels and secretion profiles. When splenocytes and adipocytes were co-cultured without direct contact, permitting only paracrine communication, secretion of IL-6 and MCP-1 were increased by 3- and 2.5-fold, respectively, over what was secreted by individual cultures, whereas TNFα secretion was reduced by 55%. When cells were co-cultured with direct cell-cell contact, IL-6 and MCP-1 secretion were increased by an additional 36% and 38%, respectively, over that measured from just paracrine stimulation alone, indicating that cell contact provides a synergistic signal that amplifies elevated cytokine secretion stimulated by paracrine signals. Using splenocytes from TNFα-/- mice showed that the absence of TNFα has little effect on paracrine stimulation of cytokine secretion, but attenuates cell contact-mediated enhancement of IL-6 and MCP-1 secretion. Furthermore, TNFα supports cell contact-mediated signaling in part, but not exclusively, through Nuclear Factor-κB activation. These findings indicate that engagement of cell contact between immune cells and adipocytes, in conjunction with locally secreted paracrine factors, activates a unique signaling pathway that mediates crosstalk between these cell types leading to marked effects on cytokine secretion and profile.
N300 and Social Affordances: A Study with a Real Person and a Dummy as Stimuli

PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0047922
Abstract: Pictures of objects have been shown to automatically activate affordances, that is, actions that could be performed with the object. Similarly, pictures of faces are likely to activate social affordances, that is, interactions that would be possible with the person whose face is being presented. Most interestingly, if it is the face of a real person that is shown, one particular type of social interactions can even be carried out while event-related potentials (ERPs) are recorded. Indeed, subtle eye movements can be made to achieve an eye contact with the person with minimal artefacts on the EEG. The present study thus used the face of a real person to explore the electrophysiological correlates of affordances in a situation where some of them (i.e., eye contacts) are actually performed. The ERPs this person elicited were compared to those evoked by another 3D stimulus: a real dummy, and thus by a stimulus that should also automatically activate eye contact affordances but with which such affordances could then be inhibited since they cannot be carried out with an object. The photos of the person and of the dummy were used as matching stimuli that should not activate social affordances as strongly as the two 3D stimuli and for which social affordances cannot be carried out. The fronto-central N300s to the real dummy were found of greater amplitudes than those to the photos and to the real person. We propose that these greater N300s index the greater inhibition needed after the stronger activations of affordances induced by this 3D stimulus than by the photos. Such an inhibition would not have occurred in the case of the real person because eye contacts were carried out.

Abstract: the mixed linear model is characterized using the classic linear model of gauss-markov. the multipliers of lagrange are a tool to obtain the best lineal predictors (blup), we shown the results of searle (1997), where some sums of the best linear unbiased predictors of random effects are zero. this characteristic is similar with the reparametrization f-restriction in the fixed linear models. we present an illustration based on results of gaona (2000) in crossed classification with the data measured in young bulls sanmartiniano, and other example in hierarchical models with the results presented in harville & fenech (1985) corresponding to mensurations of weight of a group of male sheep. in the usual model of analysis of variance for mixed models, some sums of the unbiased lineal predictors (blup) associated to random effects are zero when the model has a single variable answer, however, this property does not work in cases in which there are different evaluations in the same experimental unit, which will be correlated.

Abstract: objective: to increase the knowledge of health care providers′ understanding of and practices on domestic violence, in order to improve care. materials and methods: this study was conducted between may and november 2003, in quintana roo, coahuila, and mexico city, three mexican states with a high prevalence of domestic violence. sixty in-depth interviews with health care providers in public health institutions and key informants of health service provision were completed. results: health care providers were categorized based on the extent to which they reproduced four "discourses about violence". these discourses influence their daily practice and are related to the informants' gender values and social positions. most informants expressed their willingness to address the issue of domestic violence. conclusions: attention to and care for domestic violence is insufficient in health services; this may be due more closely related to a predominant discourse tolerating domestic violence among decision-makers, than to the attitudes of health care providers; the latter demonstrated greater awareness of women's rights.

Palabras clave: Streptomyces; mercurio-resistencia; gen mer A; plásmidos; humedales. Abstract Ten native actinomycete strains were isolated from water and sediment samples collected in La Conejera wet-lands to assess mercury resistance and detoxification ability for evaluating the presence of the mer A gene involved in that process. Sensitivity assays were performed using 3.68 x 10-3 mM to 10 mM HgCl2 concentrations. Growth curves were generated for each resistant strain after 192 h in discontinuous fermentation in medium supplemented with 0.01 mM and 0.05 mM HgCl2. Biomass growth was then measured by dry weight, maximum value (2.37 g L-1) being obtained after 72 h. Primer pairs were designed based on the sequence encoding the mercury-reductase enzyme in Streptomyces lividans 1326. PCR conditions for amplifying that region were standardised. The mer A gene was identified in the KH7 strain, resulting in an amplified product of around 686 bp. The KH7 strain electrophoresis profile obtained by pulsed field gel electrophoresis showed 50, 90 and 300 Kb plasmid DNA which could be related to metal resistance in this strain. Key words: Streptomyces; mercury-resistance; mer A gene; plasmi
ABOUT THE BEST LINEAR UNBIASED PREDICTOR (BLUP) AND ASSOCIATED RESTRICTIONS SOBRE LA CONSTRUCCIóN DEL MEJOR PREDICTOR LINEAL INSESGADO (BLUP) Y RESTRICCIONES ASOCIADAS

This characteristic is similar with the reparametrization ∑-restriction in the fixed linear models.

Abstract In this article we consider the media as a complex field, crossed by heterogeneous struggles to bring into play the contest of values, political and economic interests. Our analysis aims to question the multiple power relations that constitute the space of discursive practices and non-discursive. And ask, especially as these relations have been marked by the formation of monopolies in the communication system in Brazil. For this, we rely on the analysis of the relations of power-knowledge-subjectivity in Michel Foucault. We analyze how the oligarchies of the broadcasting industry in the field of communication, they can articulate a device that plays crystallized in their practices banality of everyday life, marked by sensational entertainment market, limiting than other modes of existence and discourses circulate and gain visibility in Brazilian society.
