Abstract: This study aimed at quantitatively evaluating the sugarcane losses and the damage caused to the ratoon cane while using the Case IH A8800 harvester in different displacement speeds; it was conducted in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Three speeds were used as treatment (2 km·h-1, 3 km·h-1, and 4.5 km·h-1), and each treatment was composed of six rows of harvested ratoon, each with a length of 290 m. In order to evaluate the quantitative losses in t·ha-1 and the percentage of losses, the remaining sugarcane, left on the field after harvesting, was collected. The sampling frame was set to every 50 m, dividing the borders by 40 m; the measurement for each sampling area was of 20 m2, with five repetitions. In order to evaluate the damage caused to the ratoon canes, we chose a visual methodology to classify the damage degrees, ranging from one to four. There was no significant difference in losses when comparing different speeds. Therefore, it is more advantageous and economically viable to use the speed of 4.5 km·h-1, which collects more in less time.

Abstract: the moisture content of peanut kernel (arachis hypogaea l.) at digging ranges from 30 to 50% on a wet basis (w.b.). the seed moisture content must be reduced to 10.5% or below before seeds can be graded and marketed. after digging, peanuts are cured on a window sill for two to five days then mechanically separated from the vine. heated air is used to further dry the peanuts from approximately 18 to 10% moisture content w.b. drying is required to maintain peanut seed and grain quality. traditional dryers pass a high temperature and high humidity air stream through the seed mass. the drying time is long because the system is inefficient and the high temperature increases the risk of thermal damage to the kernels. new technology identified as heat pipe technology (hpt) is available and has the unique feature of removing the moisture from the air stream before it is heated and passed through the seed. a study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the hpt system in drying peanut seed. the seeds inside the shells were dried from 17.4 to 7.3% in 14 hours and 11 minutes, with a rate of moisture removal of 0.71% mc per hour. this drying process caused no reduction in seed quality as measured by the standard germination, accelerated ageing and field emergence tests. it was concluded that the hpt system is a promising technology for drying peanut seed when efficiency and maintenance of physiological quality are desired.

Abstract: under subtropical and tropical environments soybean seed (glycine max (l.) merrill) are harvested early to avoid deterioration from weathering. careful after-harvest drying is required and is an important step in maintaining the physiological quality of the seed. soybean seed should be harvested when the moisture content is in a range of 16-20%. traditional drying utilizes a high temperature air stream passed through the seed mass without dehumidification. the drying time is long because the system is inefficient and the high temperature increases the risk of thermal damage to the seed. new technology identified as heat pipe technology (hpt) is available and has the unique feature of removing the moisture from the air stream before it is passed through the seed mass at the same environmental temperature. two studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of hpt for dry soybean seed. in the first study the seeds were dried from 17.5 to 11.1% in 2 hours and 29 minutes and in the second sudy the seeds were dried from 22.6 to 11.9% in 16 hours and 32 minutes. this drying process caused no reduction in seed quality as measured by the standard germination, tetrazolium-viability, accelerated aging and seedling vigor classification tests. the only parameter that indicated a slight seed quality reduction was tetrazolium vigor in the second study. it was concluded that the hpt system is a promising technology for drying soybean seed when efficiency and maintenance of physiological quality are desired.

Abstract: the present study had the objective of developing a non-conventional method to determine mechanical damage in soybean seeds, and also to verify its relation to the physiological quality, using the image analysis technique. unlike the traditional tests, this technique analyzes seeds without destroying them, and together with the germination test, it can be observed that the damage detected in the image analysis is really important because of its influence on the germination process. the research was carried out with three cultivars of soybean (ft-2, ft-10 and iac-2), possessing different contents of lignin in the seed coat (different resistance performance for mechanical damage). the mechanical damage had been caused by means of the pendulum test in six different regions of the seeds. the image analysis identified external and internal mechanical damage in soybean seeds, and was also efficient in detecting weathering and stink-bug damage.

Abstract: the electrocardiogram (ecg) is the recording of the heart's electrical activity from the surface of the body and has been worldwide used in routine medical practice since the last century. this is a first-rate tool for a rapid interpretation of cardiac rhythm and for assessment and immediate therapeutic management in patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome, which is a clinical entity that includes unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction with and without st-segment elevation. currently, electrocardiographs from various manufacturers are capable of providing automatic diagnosis of ecgs, but there are few published studies about the performance of these equipments. the objective of this paper is to evaluate the performance of an interpretive electrocardiograph in order to determine their suitability for use in a computer system that uses the medical history information obtained by the general practitioner and the electrocardiographic report emitted by the equipment evaluated to aid the diagnosis of acute coronary syndromes, when the patient is not treated by cardiologists. we used an interpretive electrocardigraph nihon kohden cardiofax 9620. the electrocardiograph simulator metron ps 420 was the choice for the simulated tests, and also we compared the performance of the cardiofax with a telemedicine system available in a semi-rural area in brazil. the tests resulted in 93.8% sensitivity and 83.3% specificity that were considered satisfactory in clinical situations compatible with acute myocardial ischemia, validating their use in an artificial intelligence system for the diagnosis of acs.
