Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of a Silver-Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite
Marcos Díaz,Flora Barba,Miriam Miranda,Francisco Guitián,Ramón Torrecillas,José S. Moya
Journal of Nanomaterials , 2009, DOI: 10.1155/2009/498505
Abstract: A silver-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite has been obtained by a colloidal chemical route and subsequent reduction process in H2/Ar atmosphere at 350°C. This material has been characterized by TEM, XRD, and UV-Visible spectroscopy, showing the silver nanoparticles (~65 nm) supported onto the HA particles (~130 nm) surface without a high degree of agglomeration. The bactericidal effect against common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria has been also investigated. The results indicated a high antimicrobial activity for Staphylococcus aureus, Pneumococcus and Escherichia coli, so this material can be a promising antimicrobial biomaterial for implant and reconstructive surgery applications.
Biodiversity in Chestnut Woodlots: Management Regimen vs Woodlot Size  [PDF]

Open Journal of Forestry (OJF) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojf.2012.24024
Abstract: This paper analyzes the effect of woodlot size and land-use intensity on the species richness of vascular plants, birds, beetles, and ants in Castanea sativa (chestnut) woodlots of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula included in the category “9260 Castanea sativa woodland”, “Annex I, DC 92/43/European Community”. The results show that the surface area of the woodlot did not affect the richness of vascular plants and ants but did affect birds and beetles. The level of abandonment of the woodlot affected only the richness of vascular plants, while the use level had no significant impact on species richness of any of the groups. The degree of maturity of the woodlot, estimated by the tree-trunk circumference, determined only the richness of plants but not that of different groups of animals. In conclusion: 1) Plants and animals responded differently to woodlot size, abandonment, and the degree of maturity of the woodlots; 2) Traditional agricultural practices do not negatively affect the biodiversity of the chestnut woodlots of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula or favor plant diversity; and 3) A traditional use of these woodlots may continue to play an important role in maintaining the diversity of plant species in the area.
Los bienes culturales en el espacio habitable
Guitián,Dyna;
Argos , 2007,
Abstract: the article inquires about the cultural goods of the ways of dwelling in order to propose a research agenda of thesymbolic construction of the cultural heritage of such ways. as the relationship between habitable space and urban culture is established, cultural goods we talk about are the artifacts involved in modes of inhabiting, so that interest is centered on how urbanactors produce a symbolic meaning as a way of generating cultural identity artifacts. the diversity of symbolic contentsgenerated by the differences and divergences, typical of thecontemporary society?s heterogeneous condition, are incorporated into the analysis. finally, as the relationship between daily life and habitable space is established, the proposal of a classification of cultural goods for both collective and domestic daily life is formulated as a first draft for a research agenda of such goods.
Effects of Methylthiouracil on the Serum Protein Fractions in Dog
A- Pousti N- Guiti
Acta Medica Iranica , 1970,
Abstract: The effects of a prolonged oral administration of methylthiouracil was studied on the electrophoretically - separated serum protein fractions in 24 dogs. Though the statistical mean of changes in serum albumin and alpha2 globulin were highly significant but the individual alterations were not consistent and therefore on the basis of the available data there does not seem to be a characteristic electrophoretic pattern in the experimentally produced hypothyroidism in the dog. This finding is in agreement with the clinical electrophoretic pattern reported in the human spontaneous hypothyroidism.
Effects of Methylthiouracil on Basal Metabolism Rate and Cholesterol Level in Dog.
A. Pousti,N. Guiti
Acta Medica Iranica , 1968,
Abstract: The effects of prolonged administration of methylthiouracil were studied on several physiological parameters pertinent to the thyroid function in dog."nThough the individual variations of the measured parameters were not consistent but the statistical differences of diminution of basal metabolism rate, respiration rate and erythrocyte count- were significant Brief explanations for the mechanism of the pathophysiological findings were presented.
EFFECTS OF THYROIDECTOMY ON THE SERUM PROTEIN FRACTIONS IN DOG
N. Guiti,A. Pousti
Acta Medica Iranica , 1969,
Abstract: The study on the serum protein electrophoresis following thyroidectomy in A puppies showed a significant decrease in the albumin and -a-ratio associated with a relative increase in gamma and total globulin, but alterations of alpha I and beta globulin were not statistically charcteristic in our thyroidectomized dogs.
Bone Loss at Implant with Titanium Abutments Coated by Soda Lime Glass Containing Silver Nanoparticles: A Histological Study in the Dog
Arturo Martinez, Francisco Guitián, Roberto López-Píriz, José F. Bartolomé, Belén Cabal, Leticia Esteban-Tejeda, Ramón Torrecillas, José S. Moya
PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0086926
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate bone loss at implants connected to abutments coated with a soda-lime glass containing silver nanoparticles, subjected to experimental peri-implantitis. Also the aging and erosion of the coating in mouth was studied. Five beagle dogs were used in the experiments. Three implants were placed in each mandible quadrant: in 2 of them, Glass/n-Ag coated abutments were connected to implant platform, 1 was covered with a Ti-mechanized abutment. Experimental peri-implantitis was induced in all implants after the submarginal placement of cotton ligatures, and three months after animals were euthanatized. Thickness and morphology of coating was studied in abutment cross-sections by SEM. Histology and histo-morphometric studies were carried on in undecalfied ground slides. After the induced peri-implantitis: 1.The abutment coating shown losing of thickness and cracking. 2. The histometry showed a significant less bone loss in the implants with glass/n-Ag coated abutments. A more symmetric cone of bone resorption was observed in the coated group. There were no significant differences in the peri-implantitis histological characteristics between both groups of implants. Within the limits of this in-vivo study, it could be affirmed that abutments coated with biocide soda-lime-glass-silver nanoparticles can reduce bone loss in experimental peri-implantitis. This achievement makes this coating a suggestive material to control peri-implantitis development and progression.

Sobre la democracia en el ámbito internacional
García Guitián, Elena
Isegoría , 2001,
Abstract: Changes originated by the complex dynamics labeled as globalization in the context of the end of Cold War world order have increased the number of normative proposals that focus on the possibility and convenience of democratizing the international sphere. Nevertheless, we still lack a clear understanding about how this process should and could take place. Democracy has always been thought as a form of government that presupposes some well defined territorial basis and demos. That is the reason why we should not try just to apply its principles and institutions to the international order, but to propose functional equivalents. And one of the most complex questions we have to deal with is the way to restructure political representation.
