Frana, Jean Marcel Carvalho;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742003000200013
Abstract: in 1805 the british traveller john turnbull published a voyage round the world in the years 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803, and 1804. in his diary turnbull describes the environment he found in several places he visited during his journey, including baía de todos os santos, where he stayed for five days in august, 1800. what follows is a fragment of turnbull?s journal - with an explanatory introduction - in which he presents his impressions about brazil and it?s relationship with portugal during those years.
A Fran?a Antártica e a cria??o de padr?es narrativos sobre o Brasil e os brasileiros
Frana, Jean Marcel Carvalho;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742008000100003
Abstract: the objective of this short essay is to analyze the historical accounts originating from the first french colonization attempt in the new world, the french antarctic, with the purpose of defining in such writings certain patterns about america and its inhabitants, the so-called savages. we sought to demonstrate that such patterns, established in a pioneering way by the gauls, had a long life in the subsequent accounts where brazil and its inhabitants were mentioned.
Imagens do Brasil nas rela es de viagem dos séculos XVII e XVIII

Revista Brasileira de Educa??o , 2000,
Abstract: This essay aims to analyze a series of descriptions from colonial Rio de Janeiro, extracted from travel narratives written by European travelers that passed by this city between the 17th and the 18th centuries. Besides giving the perspective which these visitors left about the city and its inhabitants, this essay brings into discussion the role that the travel reports performed in the construction of the image that the Europeans had about the Brazilians back then and, most of all, the role that they performed afterwards in the construction process of the image that the Brazilians, from the 19th century on, had about themselves and about their countries
Estimates for Carbon Stocks in Soil under Humid Grassland Areas in the Federal District of Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract: The soils that lay below humid ecosystems are characterized as being significant holders of carbon. Because of the great susceptibility of this type of environment to anthropic changes, expressive quantities of carbon stored in the soil can be released into the atmosphere. In the Cerrado biome (Brazil), only a few types of vegetation have had carbon storage levels in their soil estimated. The main purpose of this study was to obtain basic quantitative parameters for carbon storage and to identify the general aspects of soil in regions where there exists Humid Grasslands (Campo Limpo úmido), a kind of humid area phytophysiognomy found in the Cerrado. We selected 6 regions of the Federal District with this kind of vegetation formation, characterized by low anthropic impact and located either in the interior or in the proximity of specially protected areas. In each one of the sampled regions, we marked a transect with 4 equidistant points and collected material at 7 different levels of depth: 0 - 5, 5 - 10, 10 - 20, 20 - 30, 30 - 40, 40 - 50 and 50 - 60 cm. We obtained 168 samples, with 84 related to Humid Grassland areas in gleysols and 84 samples related to areas in plinthosols—types of soil dominant in this environment. We determined the texture, bulk density and concentration of nitrogen and carbon at each depth. The average concentration of carbon for Humid Grassland areas was 55.19 g.kg-1, with an average of 61.65 g.kg-1 for Gleysols and 48.73 g.kg-1 for Plinthosols. The soil samples displayed distinct textural differences between gleysols and plinthosols. There were no significant differences in soil density (0.75 kg.dm-3 for Gleysols and 0.72 kg.dm-3 for Plinthosols). The average concentration of nitrogen was 20.66 g.kg-1, with 23.98 g.kg-1 for Gleysols and 17.34 g.kg-1 for Plinthosols. The average carbon storage for Humid Grassland areas, down to 60 cm deep, was 244.17 mg C ha-1 and the total estimated stock for these areas in the Federal District was 206.71 Gg.C. In general, the samples obtained in gleysols showed a carbon content and nitrogen level superior to those in plinthosols, although a greater sampling effort is needed to confirm the differences observed. The density values of stored carbon in the soil beneath Humid Grassland areas proved to be superior to those values observed for other types of vegetation typical for the Cerrado environment.

A new brain metalloendopeptidase which degrades the Alzheimer ?-amyloid 1-40 peptide producing soluble fragments without neurotoxic effects
Carvalho, K.M.;Frana, M.S.F.;Camar?o, G.C.;Ruchon, A.F.;
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X1997001000002
Abstract: a new metalloendopeptidase was purified to apparent homogeneity from a homogenate of normal human brain using successive steps of chromatography on deae-trisacryl, hydroxylapatite and sephacryl s-200. the purified enzyme cleaved the gly33-leu34 bond of the 25-35 neurotoxic sequence of the alzheimer ?-amyloid 1-40 peptide producing soluble fragments without neurotoxic effects. this enzyme activity was only inhibited by divalent cation chelators such as edta, egta and o-phenanthroline (1 mm) and was insensitive to phosphoramidon and captopril (1 μm concentration), specific inhibitors of neutral endopeptidase (ec 3.4.24.11) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ec 3.4.15.1), respectively. the high affinity of this human brain endopeptidase for ?-amyloid 1-40 peptide (km = 5 μm) suggests that it may play a physiological role in the degradation of this substance produced by normal cellular metabolism. it may also be hypothesized that the abnormal accumulation of the amyloid ?-protein in alzheimer's disease may be initiated by a defect or an inactivation of this enzyme.

Abstract: the experiment was carried in inra (institut national de la recherche agronomique) at theix, france. two grasses (perennial ryegrass and tall fescue) were grown in sward boxes (0,13 m2) and submitted to three defoliation intervals (3,5, 7 and 14 days between two successive defoliation) and three defoliation intensities (160, 320 and 640 bites.m-2 at each defoliation). four months after sowing, at defoliation date, sward boxes were offered to four individual dry ewes and removed after a given number of bites had been taken. for each grass species, the growth, senescence and defoliation fluxes were studied. the results showed that the interval and the intensity of grazing had distinct effects on the growth, senescence and defoliation fluxes as well as on the equilibrium of grass mixtures.
