Abstract: the objective of this trial was to study the effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin on milk yield and composition, blood metabolites and hormonal profile in lactating goats. twenty-four toggenburg goats were assigned to one of two treatments as follows: t1 (n=12) received injection of 250 mg of r-bst, every 14 days (four injections), and t2 (n=12) received injections of saline solution (control). no significant differences on milk yield and composition (fat, protein, and dry extract) were observed comparing r-bst-treated goats with non-treated animals. however, milk lactose content was higher (p<0.05) on goats that received r-bst (4.47 ± 0.2) than on those treated with saline solution (4.34 ± 0.2 %) while somatic cells count was lower on t1 (681.1 ± 689.9) than on t2 [(1,001.84 ± 610.9 (x103 cells/ml)]. injection r-bst increased the concentration of non-esterified fatty acid compared to the saline-treated animals (309.67 ± 169.62 vs. 247.34 ± 126.38 meq/l) but the opposite was observed for urea concentration (86.84 ± 33.81 vs. 121.16 ± 42.57 mg/dl). the r-bst treatment reduced the total cholesterol and hdl levels (82.46 ± 19.25 vs. 89.29 ± 23.66 and 155.95 ± 19.67 x 177.67 ± 32.79 mg/dl for t1 and t2, respectively) in lactating goats. concentrations of albumin, glucose, total proteins, b-hidroxybutirate and thyroxin as well as body weight and body condition score all remained unchanged comparing both treatments. it can be concluded that r-bst increased milk lactose content, reduced somatic cells count, and changed the profile of blood metabolites of toggenburg goats.

Abstract Rice processing, especially in the Rio Grande doSul State, is very representative percentagewise in the economyof the State. Until not long ago the industry was not equally up toenvironmental standards. A few years ago, rice processingcompanies started to look into it and initiated programs andactions to reduce impact on the environment. Consideringtoday’s level of environmental degradation we chose to evaluatethe environmental impact of a rice processing plant in the city ofBagé/RS because this is a fundamental step for theimplementation of an environmental management system. Withthis in mind and using a FMEA (Failure Modes and EffectAnalysis) tool, we defined the parameters for analysis andcorrection of the impacts. FMEA helps in the identification,classification and diagnosis of the type of environmental impactgenerated by an industrial process, helping in the implementationof an action plan to mitigate the most significant environmentalimpacts of the company.
Fonseca, Maria da Concei??o Ferreira;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97021999000100011
Abstract: in the limits of meaning (os limites do sentido, 1995), eduardo guimar?es analyzes the efforts to rescue the issue of meaning in linguistic studies as a movement to include in their object elements that saussure had deliberately excluded: the subject, the world and the history. in the paper the possibilities for innovation in the teaching-learning of elementary mathematics (as possibilidades de inova??o no ensino-aprendizagem da matemática elementar, 1995), manuela david collects what she considered to be the most expressive trends in the current teaching of mathematics in brazil, remarking that all of them, seeking for a meaning, go beyond the mathematical contents. in the present work we paraphrase guimar?es? text, and take such current trends in the teaching of mathematics (problem solving, modeling, constructivism, ethnomathematics, and what david refers as a teaching committed to social change) trying to identify in them the search for a meaning for the teaching of mathematics. this is done through the re-inclusion of those same elements that were excluded from linguistics by sausurre, and neglected by more traditional approaches to school mathematics. what the analysis tries to point out is how the search for meaning in the teaching of mathematics takes a path analogous to that identified by guimar?es in studies of language: the effort to re-include in the approach to school mathematics those elements traditionally excluded: the object, the subject and the history.

Abstract: this paper demonstrates a brand new methodology that is able to solve data comparison problems in census sectors among different population researches. thus, it aims to show method procedures used in establishing this new urban planning unit named census sector clusters (cscs). it also aims to apply this method in a study through a basic water service and sewage disposal indicator (housing permanently connected to general public water services), calculated from some variables of the 1980, 1991 and 2000 census. the answers to this test have demonstrated that it is possible to get a space representation through this new urban planning unit data from different population census that took place after 1980. it is also expected that geo-referenced data and/or studies from other institutions are used under the methodology herein presented and as a consequence the integration and development of some other kind of spatial and temporal analyses be possible. finally, the obtained results indicate that the present methodology might be consolidated as one of the most important tools in territory planning and management.
Fonseca, Maria de Jesus da Concei??o Ferreira;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022007000100005
Abstract: the purpose of this study was to examine to what extent the knowledge about biodiversity and sustainable development is being socialized in schools of the largest city of the brazilian amazon region, and whether or not this knowledge is prominent in basic schooling, so as to help creating public awareness about the value of the biological assets of the region, taking into account that biodiversity is one of the main riches of this region, and that sustainable development is the chief focus of public policies. the work aimed at the secondary school level, and analyzed ten schoolbooks and eight curriculum proposals related to the discipline of biology; it also interviewed 24 teachers and 719 pupils from the third year of public and private schools in belém (pa), brazil. the results have shown that the contents presented in the schoolbooks, and recommended by the curriculum proposals have universal features, unrelated to regional issues, and that the knowledge of students and teachers about biodiversity - in general, and specific to the amazon region - and sustainable development lack up-to-date scientific basis, and therefore do not achieve signification for the creation of a position focused on environmental conservation. the following proposals are made: a) more significant approximation of the school and the scientific knowledge produced about regional environmental issues, and b) establishment of public policies of educational nature in the region, giving priority to these discussions during teacher education.

Abstract: liming surface application effects on plant chemical traits, under no-tillage systems, are not well defined yet. a field trial has been carried out on a dystrophic dark red latosol (haplortox) at ponta grossa, state of paraná, brazil, aiming at evaluate liming surface application effects, under a no-tillage scheme, on soybean nutrient uptake and its reflexes on grain yielding performances. a randomized complete block design has been used, in which four dolomitic limestone rates have been studied (0, 2, 4 and 6 t.ha-1), with twelve replications. those rates have been set up to increase soil base saturation, in the 0-20 cm soil layer, to 50%, 70% and 90%, respectively. surface liming application has increased p and mg plant levels and decreased zn and mn ones, as expected by the presence of higher soil ph?s in surface layers, with no significant effects on grain yields. so, high soybean grain yields, reported in highly acidic soils under no-tillage systems, might be related to proper water and nutrient uptakes due to higher soil moisture avaiability.
