Abstract:
Sobre las formas de vida tecnológicas y las prácticas biopolíticas
Flavia Costa
Revista Observaciones Filosóficas , 2011,
Abstract: In Critique of Information (2005), sociologist Scott Lash said that our time trend coincides with the deployment of "technological life forms." Talking about "lifestyles" suggests Lash, is to be in the area of intersection between natural-biological realities and social-cultural. And referring to "technological life forms" include in that scenario involves a third term, the technique, which enters into a composition scheme with the other two and indicates a movement of action "remote" beyond the limits of the anthropomorphic own body. In that book Lash staged the term, but it developed more than a few paragraphs. Here I seek to deepen that notion outlined succinctly by Lash, which I consider particularly fruitful for several reasons. Mainly because it serves to highlight the intimate connection between two processes that have usually been analyzed separately: first, the gradual politicization of biological life (or biological concept of the political, that is, the thesis biopolitics developed from some the writings, courses and lectures taught by Michel Foucault in the early 1970) and secondly, the increasing mechanization of production processes, human capabilities and even lifestyles. Briefly, the process of modernization in its restricted appearance in our time appears to be linked with the extension of the life and the human body of principles of autonomy of processes, improvement, optimization and individual responsibility for the care of psycho-physical endowment ("human capital "own or acquired) characteristic of a particular combination of industrial-capitalist technical code and emergent forms of neoliberal governmentality.
Sexuality of People with Spinal Cord Injury: Knowledge, Difficulties and Adaptation  [PDF]

Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering (JBiSE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbise.2014.76040
Abstract: Expressing sexuality is an important part of life, whether the person has a spinal cord injury (SCI) or not. This study investigated the sexual activity before and after SCI, the difficulties, and adjustments made by these people in relation to their sexuality. This is a qualitative study conducted with 14 people with SCI through semi-structured interviews, which we analyzed in light of pertinent literature and organized into three themes: sexual activity before and after SCI; difficulties in performing sexual activities; and adjustments in sexual activity after SCI. We conclude that, although there may be many difficulties, with the partner’s support they can get sexual satisfaction and adapt to the new reality. Nonetheless, it is necessary and essential that the patient receive guidance about the possible changes and adaptive methods, and nurses can play a critical role in this process.

Open Journal of Molecular and Integrative Physiology (OJMIP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojmip.2013.34026
Abstract:

The objective is to describe the impact annexin V-binding technique has on couples diagnosed with male infertility and how to optimize sperm parameters so that this technique contributes to simplify the assisted reproductive treatment that will be prescribed [1-4]. Empirical studies and expert consensus related to the physiological and medical aspects of the use of annexin V-binding which were presented in this study were identified in articles through bibliographical research.

The World-System of Giovanni Battista Riccioli and the Phases of Venus and Mercury  [PDF]
Flavia Marcacci
Advances in Historical Studies (AHS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ahs.2015.42011
Abstract: The Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli (1598-1671) proposed an original astronomical system as an intermediate solution between the Copernican and the Ptolemaic systems. Many scholars describe his system as “geocentric”, and so does Riccioli. He uses the Tychonic solution by adding a lot of differences, for instance, the order of the orbits and the movement of Jupiter and Mars. In his astronomical work, Riccioli is rigorous and serious and offers a great quantity of observational data. The analysis of these results is crucial to understand the evolution of the Copernican question during the first half of the XVII century. The article will look at some general lines of Riccioli’s system, to understand how an astronomer of the XVII century really worked and to understand which problems the Copernican system could not resolve. Finally, I will try to consider some philosophical implications of this historical case.
Bioaccumulation of copper, zinc, cadmium and lead by Bacillus sp., Bacillus cereus, Bacillus sphaericus and Bacillus subtilis
Costa, Antonio Carlos Augusto da;Duta, Flavia Pereira;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822001000100001
Abstract: this work presents some results on the use of microbes from the genus bacillus for uptake of cadmium, zinc, copper and lead ions. maximum copper bioaccumulations were 5.6 mol/g biomass for b. sphaericus, 5.9 mol/g biomass for b. cereus and b. subtilis, and 6.4 mol/g biomass for bacillus sp. maximum zinc bioaccumulations were 4.3 mol/g biomass for b. sphaericus, 4.6 mol/g biomass for b. cereus, 4.8 mol/g biomass for bacillus sp. and 5.0 mol/g biomass for b. subtilis. maximum cadmium bioaccumulations were 8.0 mol/g biomass for b. cereus, 9.5 mol/g biomass for b. subtilis, 10.8 mol/g biomass for bacillus sp. and 11.8 mol/g biomass for b. sphaericus. maximum lead biomaccumulations were 0.7 mol/g biomass for b. sphaericus, 1.1 mol/g biomass for b. cereus, 1.4 mol/g biomass for bacillus sp. and 1.8 mol/g biomass for b. subtilis. the different bacillus strains tested presented distinct uptake capacities, and the best results were obtained for b. subtilis and b. cereus.
Blogs: de diários pessoais a comunidades virtuais de escritores/leitores
Luccio, Flavia Di;Nicolacida-Costa, Ana Maria;
Psicologia: Ciência e Profiss?o , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-98932010000100010
Abstract: new textual supports generate new forms of writing and reading. historically, three great textual revolutions were launched by the inventions of the codex, the press and the international computer net. in the last case, the textual support became the computer screen, which, connected to the screens of other computers, incorporated several characteristics of on-line writing, including its interactivity. this interconnected textual space can be divided into several others. one of them is that of the blogs. initially dedicated predominantly to the writing of “virtual diaries”, the diversification of its use produced other types of blogs (journalistic, humoristic, literary, etc.). in order to investigate how writers and readers are using this new textual space and its tools, open interviews with brazilian blog writers were carried out. the analysis of their replies revealed that, at the same time that they write their blogs, all of them regularly read other blogs and interact with their writers. as a result, a community of blog writers/readers is formed, which reveals a strong potential for integration, resistance and public opinion making.
Escritores de blogs: interagindo com os leitores ou apenas ouvindo ecos? Blog writers: interacting with readers or listening to echoes?

The present study aimed at investigating the impacts that electronic writing and the computer screen as a medium for text transmission have on writers and readers. Roger Chartier′s descriptions of the three important scenarios which anteceded the electronic writing era - those marked by the scroll, the handwritten codex and the printed book - were used as a comparative base for the evaluation of this new kind of writing on this new kind of medium. Our analysis concentrated on this fourth scenario and explored one of its unique characteristics: the one that enables the interaction between writers and readers on the screens of interconnected computers. In order to do so, we chose a textual space on the internet known as Weblog or blog. The Underlying Discourse Unveiling Method (UDVM) was used to conduct an investigation in which authors of regularly updated blogs were interviewed. Even though at first the authors had said that their decision to create and keep blogs was strictly connected to the possibility of interaction with the readers, a more detailed analysis of the interviews revealed a different picture. They hardly ever interact with their readers.

Machado, Flavia Costa Nunes;Fregni, Felipe;Campos, Cynthia Resende;Limongi, Jo?o Carlos Papaterra;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2003000100023
Abstract: bilateral hemifacial spasm (bhs) is a rare focal movement disorder often associated with vascular compression of both facial nerves. the contractions are usually asymmetric and asynchronous. typically, one side is affected first and there is a long but variable interval for the symptoms on the other side to occur. bhs must be differentiated from other conditions including blefarospasm, facial myokymia, facial tics, oromandibular dystonia, and hemimasticatory spasm. the most successful and non-invasive symtomatic treatment is botulinum toxin injections but microvascular decompression surgery is another therapeutic option. we report the case of a 70 years old man with bilateral hemifacial spasms and present a brief review of the literature.
