A institucionaliza??o das estratégias de negócios: o caso das start-ups na internet brasileira em uma perspectiva construtivista
Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65552004000200009
Abstract: the objectivist approach to the social reality is not the only acceptable methodological approach, despite being the dominant research strategy in the business strategy field. interpretive approaches to business strategy have been suggested by many authors since the 1960's and 1970's. this article aims at reviewing the most important elements of a construtivist approach to business strategy, focusing on the consequences of such approach to the decision-making practice. those consequences are: (1) abandoning the prescription that organizations should adapt to their environment. (2) redefining opportunities, threats and strategic constraints from a cognitive perspective, and (3) the possibility of thinking differently about business strategy giving more emphasis to the decision making process. in this article the strategic styles of brazilian internet start-ups are evaluates from a neo-institutional perspective, illustrating some practical aspects of a strategy research based on a construtivist approach.

Abstract: this article aims to build bridges between three theoretical fields: organizational strategy, social networks, and social identities. by analyzing the networks of brazilian musicians (interpreters and composers), we monitor the emergence of new styles, along with the structural changes in the network. within the period in analysis, from 1958 to 1969, four musical styles emerge and consolidate: bossa nova, jovem guarda, mpb and tropicália. we utilized social networks analysis in order to grasp three dimensions of the field evolution: network evolution, creation of structural holes and transformation of actors' centrality. internal conflicts in a field generate brokerage opportunities among groups separated by structural holes. these holes might be gradually bridged through incremental transformations in the artists' networks. as the emerging artists' influence increases, there is higher potential for the introduction of a new style and change of the fi eld's classifi catory system.
ISO9000, consultants and paradoxes: a sociological analysis of quality assurance and human resource techniques
Vasconcelos, Isabella Freitas Gouveia de;Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65552003000100009
Abstract: this article analyses iso9000 normalization processes as sources of organizational isomorphism according to the new institutional theory. we present two in-depth case studies in the french computer industry showing that there are two manners to implement iso9000 standards: an in-depth procedure (concerned with organizational effectiveness and with external legitimacy) and an instrumental one (only concerned with external legitimacy). our findings show that resistance to change is a common phenomenon in iso9000 implementation programs having high impact on organizational power games and informal structures. in order to face these issues we suggest that consultants must go beyond engineering consultation methods that are only concerned with the structural fit between the organizational standards and the iso9000 requirements. the paradox hrm model shows that information that threatens an organization's collective self-concept is often ignored, rejected, reinterpreted or hidden. the manifestation of social defenses - the ways of groups of people deal with non-contained forms of anxiety and fear, can be seen as sources of behaviors blocking organizational change.

Abstract: research on the context of human resource management in brazil indicates an important transition phase which hr departments face nowadays, from operational models of management to more strategic ones. several authors show that organizational learning has an increasingly important role in the new human resource management models that emerge in brazil. in this transition, paradoxes and contradictions usually appear in organizations, that quickly adopt new discources but face difficulties in implementting the appropriate new organizational structures and behaviours. through a case study, we show how an organization managed to avoid the undesirable effects of discource x practice paradox through the consolidation of a political model of human resource management. as these gradual changes allowed the social actores to build new competencies e relationships necessary to the implementation of the information systems in hr processes, organization is nowadays an adequate environment for learning.
The variance composition of firm growth rates
Brito, Luiz Artur Ledur;Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
BAR. Brazilian Administration Review , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-76922009000200004
Abstract: firms exhibit a wide variability in growth rates. this can be seen as another manifestation of the fact that firms are different from one another in several respects. this study investigated this variability using the variance components technique previously used to decompose the variance of financial performance. the main source of variation in growth rates, responsible for more than 40% of total variance, corresponds to individual, idiosyncratic firm aspects and not to industry, country, or macroeconomic conditions prevailing in specific years. firm growth, similar to financial performance, is mostly unique to specific firms and not an industry or country related phenomenon. this finding also justifies using growth as an alternative outcome of superior firm resources and as a complementary dimension of competitive advantage. this also links this research with the resource-based view of strategy. country was the second source of variation with around 10% of total variance. the analysis was done using the compustat global database with 80,320 observations, comprising 13,221 companies in 47 countries, covering the years of 1994 to 2002. it also compared the variance structure of growth to the variance structure of financial performance in the same sample
Performance of Brazilian companies: year effects, line of business and individual firms
Brito, Luiz Artur Ledur;Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
BAR. Brazilian Administration Review , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-76922004000100002
Abstract: performance varies. this simple statement conceals many intricacies of strategic management. because performance varies among individual firms, researchers can explore factors that differentiate these firms and explain why some firms are consistently outperforming others. because performance varies among industries, researchers can explore structural characteristics of different branches of accounting as a source of explanation. because performance varies with time, researchers can explore environmental and internal dynamic elements that drive strategic decision-making. in reality, measuring and analyzing performance is a very complicated issue when performance varies simultaneously from firm to firm, from industry to industry and from year to year. the theoretical discussion behind this question is the relative importance of the industrial organization derived approach to strategy versus the resource-based view. this paper analyzes the composition of performance variance of a set of brazilian firms from 1998 to 2001. the results demonstrate that firm effects are still dominant, with year and industry effects being lower, as previous studies with north american firms have indicated.
Organiza??es, confiabilidade e tecnologia
Queiroz, Ana Carolina S.;Vasconcelos, Flávio Carvalho de;
Revista de Administra??o de Empresas , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-75902005000300004
Abstract: this paper analyzes increasing organizational complexity derived from the adoption of new technologies, discussing the implications for both, the organization and its members. two case studies are presented dealing with implementation of new technologies in wards of radiotherapy and radiology of a private non proprietary hospital. this research offers a new perspective on the adverse effects that emerge from the implementation of new technologies and the process used by organizations to adapt to them.
