A Comparative Evaluation of Polystyrene Divinylbenzene Copolymer HPLC Columns on the Chromatographic Performance of the Compendial Method for Doxycycline Hyclate Capsules: Implications for Method Implementation of a Medical Countermeasure Medication  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymer HPLC columns on the chromatographic performance of the USP compendial method for doxycycline hyclate. The compendial method was implemented based on the assessment of the chromatographic performance of six USP defined L21 polystyrene divinylbenzene HPLC columns. Modifications to the method were based on USP <621> for chromatography. The method was validated for the determination of doxycycline hyclate and its impurities in commercially available drug products. A number of different polystyrene-divinylbenzene columns were tested and failed to provide selectivity for the resolution of doxycycline and its impurities. Separation was optimally achieved on an Agilent PLPR-S column (250 × 4.6 mm, 8 μm) by using an Agilent 1260 series HPLC system. Doxycycline hyclate and its impurities were eluted isocratically at a flow rate of 1 mL/min with mobile phase and detected at 270 nm. The column temperature was maintained at 60oC. The method was validated according to USP category I requirements for Assay. Validation acceptance criteria were met in all cases. The analytical range for doxycycline hyclate was 50 - 250 μg/mL and the linearity was r2 > 0.999 over three days. The method was determined to be specific. Both accuracy (95.1% - 102.4%) and precision (0.50% - 4.8%) were established across the analytical range for low, intermediate and high QC concentrations. Method applicability was demonstrated by analyzing marketed products of doxycycline hyclate, in which results showed potency meeting USP acceptance criteria. In conclusion, this study described the remarkable differences in selectivity that were encountered during the implementation phase for the compendial methods for doxycycline and its impurities in marketed products and it could be used in the future to assss the product quality of doxycycline hyclate capsules stored in the National stockpiles.
A New Application For Flotation Of Oxidized Copper Ore  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, the flotation of oxidized copper ore obtained from Ergani Copper Mining Company in Turkey was performed. This ore contains 2.03% copper, 0.15% cobalt and 3.73% sulfur. An effective processing method has not been found to recover copper and cobalt from this ore, which has been stockpiled for 40-45 years in the idled plant. It was established that recovery of copper and cobalt from this ore with hydrometallurgical treatment is not economical, so using flotation to increase the concentration of copper and cobalt was chosen. When flotation of the oxidized copper ore was performed under standard operating conditions in the plant, good results were not obtained. Because of this, the flotation of samples obtained from sulfurized medium containing different ratios of H2S+ H2O gases was done under the same conditions. Following flotation, it was seen that copper, cobalt and sulfur present in the medium were concentrated. In this solution, concentration of copper and cobalt were found five times higher than normal level.
Short Communication Effect of selenium-vitamin E injections of ewes on reproduction and growth of their lambs

Abstract: The experiment was conducted on 90 Karacabey Merino ewes divided into three groups. The first group of ewes was treated with 5 mL 0.1% sodium selenate, the second with 5 mL 0.1% sodium selenate and 250 mg vitamin E, while the third one was a control group. The effect of intra-muscular injection of selenium (Se) and Se plus vitamin E on oestrus, fertility, prolificacy, number of lambs reared the weight of lambs at birth and the live weight gain for 60 days was investigated. The injections of Se plus vitamin E significantly increased the incidence of oestrus, fertility and prolificacy in ewes, lamb body weight at day 60 and daily weight gain of ewes for 60 days postpartum compared with the control group.
Effects of Ripening Period on Textural and Sensory Properties of Capper Cheeses

Abstract: In this study, the effect of caper berries addition on the some textural and sensory properties of white cheese was investigated. Three batches of white cheese were produced: one without caper addition the test (K), another with addition of whole grain caper was (T) and the 3rd with minced caper was (P). Caper berries were added to vat two different ways as grain and minced after cutting at a level of 8 g 100 g-1 of curd weight. According to the results obtained from statistical analyses when compared to control sample, a significant difference was obtained by add caper to white cheese for hardness, adhesiveness, cohesiveness, gumminess, springiness and chewiness (p<0.05). When sensory characteristics including body and texture, appearance, taste and odour were evaluated as totally, total sensory scores of add caper as grain and minced decreased after 30th day of storage. Generally, the data obtained from the study showed that add to caper to white cheese while it was reduced to some quality characteristics and some properties had improved.

Abstract: Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are systems that are primarily developed for use of paralyzed people. Although their main aim of use has a medical point of view, they can also be used for different aims such as entertainment and cognitive researches. Since BCI systems have specific brain potentials (P300, steady state evoked potential) and ERD/ERS (Motor Imagery), they are also flexible tools for cognitive science. In this study, an experiment was conducted with 30 participants. Each participant completed two tasks through a BCI and filled NASA-TLX forms. The results were analyzed using paired t-tests to see whether BCI tasks are significantly different in terms of creating cognitive load. The results showed that NASA-TLX scores of the BCI tasks were significantly different and these systems can be considered for estimating cognitive states studies.

Comparison of Artificial Intelligence Techniques for river flow forecasting

Abstract: The use of Artificial Intelligence methods is becoming increasingly common in the modeling and forecasting of hydrological and water resource processes. In this study, applicability of Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) methods, Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN) and Feed Forward Neural Networks (FFNN), and Auto-Regressive (AR) models for forecasting of daily river flow is investigated and Seyhan River and Cine River was chosen as case study area. For the Seyhan River, the forecasting models are established using combinations of antecedent daily river flow records. On the other hand, for the Cine River, daily river flow and rainfall records are used in input layer. For both stations, the data sets are divided into three subsets, training, testing and verification data set. The river flow forecasting models having various input structures are trained and tested to investigate the applicability of ANFIS and ANN and AR methods. The results of all models for both training and testing are evaluated and the best fit input structures and methods for both stations are determined according to criteria of performance evaluation. Moreover the best fit forecasting models are also verified by verification set which was not used in training and testing processes and compared according to criteria. The results demonstrate that ANFIS model is superior to the GRNN and FFNN forecasting models, and ANFIS can be successfully applied and provide high accuracy and reliability for daily river flow forecasting.
Artificial Intelligence Techniques for river flow forecasting in the Seyhan River Catchment, Turkey

Abstract: The use of Artificial Intelligence methods is becoming increasingly common in the modeling and forecasting of hydrological and water resource processes. In this study, applicability of Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) methods, Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN) and Feed Forward Neural Networks (FFNN), for forecasting of daily river flow is investigated and the Seyhan catchment, located in the south of Turkey, is chosen as a case study. Totally, 5114 daily river flow data are obtained from river flow gauges station of ü tepe (1818) on Seyhan River between the years 1986 and 2000. The data set are divided into three subgroups, training, testing and verification. The training and testing data set include totally 5114 daily river flow data and the number of verification data points is 731. The river flow forecasting models having various input structures are trained and tested to investigate the applicability of ANFIS and ANN methods. The results of ANFIS, GRNN and FFNN models for both training and testing are evaluated and the best fit forecasting model structure and method is determined according to criteria of performance evaluation. The best fit model is also trained and tested by traditional statistical methods and the performances of all models are compared in order to get more effective evaluation. Moreover ANFIS, GRNN and FFNN models are also verified by verification data set including 731 daily river flow data at the time period 1998–2000 and the results of models are compared. The results demonstrate that ANFIS model is superior to the GRNN and FFNN forecasting models, and ANFIS can be successfully applied and provide high accuracy and reliability for daily River flow forecasting.

Abstract: Sait Faik Abas yan k is one of the leading names in our literature with both his impact on the change of conventional story understanding and his works on ordinary peoples’ lives (problems, happiness, etc.). For this reason, many studies have been conducted regarding Sait Faik and his works. The main characteristic of the writer is laziness (idleness / vagrancy) and his sympathy on hardworking people. However, we don’t see enough studies regarding these features of the writer. In our study, we are focusing on writer’s mentioned features by using some examples from recent story books of his such as “Havuz Ba ” (Pool Shore) and “Son Ku lar” (Last Birds). In this study, Sait Faik’s thought on laziness and diligence and its reflections on his works have been analyzed. MULTITASKING OR CONTINUOUS PARTIAL ATTENTION: A CRITICAL BOTTLENECK FOR DIGITAL NATIVES

Abstract: With the beginning of the second half of the past century, advances in Information and Communication Technologies had unprecedented influence deeply felt in all social structures. The effects were so much widespread that the differences in technology use have created a huge gap between generations in terms of everyday life and lifestyle. As a result, two groups occurred; those growing with technology digital natives and digital immigrants who try to keep pace with technology. Today, the computer, internet and mobile technologies like e-book readers, mobile phones, android devices, smart phones and tablet computers have become all-day business and communication tools used by digital natives. However, these high-tech tools, with their speed and ease of use, revealed some important issues that deeply affect digital natives' way of life. Among these most important effects are Continuous Partial Attention and Multitasking. In this study, these two conditions faced by digital natives were compared, and some suggestions have been put forward for the digital native learners.
