Laboratory procedures for the diagnosis of tuberculosis: a survey in ten Italian Regions
Moro,Maria Luisa; Nascetti,Simona; Morsillo,Filomena; Morandi,Matteo; ,;
Annali dell'Istituto Superiore di Sanità , 2010, DOI: 10.4415/ANN_10_02_12
Abstract: the characteristics of laboratories performing tuberculosis (tb) diagnostic procedures were investigated in ten italian regions, through a mailed questionnaire. three hundred and eighty laboratories answered (70.8% response rate), 250 of which performed directly at least one tb diagnostic procedure. standard criteria concerning microscopy, culture, identification, and drug susceptibility testing were frequently not satisfied, particularly those related to the volume of activity (32% of laboratories performing microscopy examined < 10 samples and 36% of those performing culture performed < 20 cultures per week), processing time, biosafety requirements and participation to internal/external quality control programs. the survey's results highlight the need to promote the adoption of standardized procedures and to centralize the mycobacteriology testing in a reduced number of high quality laboratories, in order to improve diagnostic accuracy, resource management and quality of surveillance data.
Museum Customer Experience and Virtual Reality: H.BOSCH Exhibition Case Study  [PDF]
Filomena Izzo
Modern Economy (ME) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/me.2017.84040
Abstract: The article tries to investigate the effects of virtual reality application on customer experience in museum. A case study was applied in order to analyze the research question. The author finds that virtual reality may provide a valuable experience with customers as well as cultural management. Data have been collected only at “Palazzo Ducale” in Venice (Italy), which provide a limited overview of the topic; however a comparative analysis might be applied to evaluate the phenomenon in other Country. Virtual reality is a quite new topic. Only few scholar have been analyzed this phenomenon in relation to museum. The aim of this study is to enrich the current literature review and provide some recommendations to public and private practitioners (professionals), providing a diverse prospective of the virtual reality and also strategical actions to improve customers’ experience.
O terramoto de Lisboa de 1755: colec??es de textos do século XVIII
Amador, Filomena;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702007000100014
Abstract: this study describes three collections of texts published in the years following the 1755 earthquake in lisbon. housed at archives and libraries in portugal, the texts represent a variety of literary genres and strategies of argumentation. here they have been analyzed according to pre-established categories. they were written during a time of transition characterized by ideological hesitations and by an eclecticism of conservative bent, a time when the latest experimentalist currents coexisted alongside attempts to reconcile scholastic aristotelianism and experimentalism. the study focuses on a narrower set of texts, of special interest to the history of science; these can be classified into one of two topics: (i) physical explanations for the earth tremors and (ii) hygienist concerns about this type of natural disaster.
A Viola??o da Condi??o em Kadiwéu
SANDALO, Filomena;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502002000100002
Abstract: although kadiwéu presents the same typological facts as the languages analyzed by baker (1995), this work shows that baker's polysynthesis parameter , according to which polysynthetic languages are pronominal argument languages, cannot be applied to this language. this paper offers, then, an alternative analysis to the pronominal argument theory for kadiwéu by arguing that nominal phrases are the verbal arguments in this polysynthetic language, like in any other better known language. on this view, one of the main properties of the polysynthetic languages, the so-called condition c violation (e.g. <>i wants john i to love mary, <> i broke john i's knife), follows from syntactic movement due to the nature of the kadiwéu v-system. that is, this paper questions the existence of a polysynthesis parameter and develops fukui & speas (1996) insight that the syntax of a given language follows from the functional categories present in this language's lexicon.
Psychology Publishing in Portugal: Hardships and Disappointment follows Expectations
Psychology Science Quarterly , 2009,
Abstract: Recently, to publish or to perish has become a motto governing most of researchers work. In Portugal, what makes the whole process so prone to hardships and disappointments is the lack of resources, mainly financial. At least, that’s what most of the interviewees – researchers working mostly at some of the major Portuguese public universities – mentioned. Such a lack of resources is cross-sectional to all aspects under analysis: accessibility, costs, reviewing, time delay, language, impact and reputation. However, some additional specificities must be pointed out, namely those deriving from a lack of organization (e.g., absence of national databases) or from the need to, most of the time, publish in a non-native language due to impact and reputation issues, with all the reviewing and time delay question specifically deriving from it. Finally, participants’ expectation and/or suggestions concerning an Open Access European Psychology Publication Platform will be outlined.

The Sustainability of Mediterranean Port Areas: Environmental Management for Local Regeneration in Valencia
Filomena Borriello
Sustainability , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/su5104288
Abstract: Urban renovation projects, which have led to the conversion of port areas through a new vision of waterfronts as elements of the potential development of the urban system in its entirety, have spread since the early 1950s and now some port cities are able to trigger some mechanisms which, even if they are the result of some processes that have been activated for decades and which are still evolving, are able to amplify and to extend over time their generated positive impacts. These impacts also produce a system of relations in the context of the hinterland, attracted also by policies of economic, social, and cultural development. In the case of the city of Valencia, we have seen, in the last 50 years, a progressive spread of the urbanized area to the coasts, simultaneously with a process of renovation of the port area, which has been populated by important architectures, and which has been equipped by efficient infrastructures and subjected to numerous recovery and restoration operations of its historic buildings. However, the environmental conditions near the port area are not well suited to a good quality of life because ports are pollution producers, sites of urban decay, and of social degradation. A good plan can include some instruments to decrease those negative factors, leading to a close merging between the port area and the city hinterland, and generating new economies. The proposal of this research consists in a method of integrating the port planning with an environmental accounting system.
Integrated interpretation of seismic and resistivity images across the Val d'Agri graben (Italy)
S. Morandi,E. Ceragioli
Annals of Geophysics , 2002, DOI: 10.4401/ag-3510
Abstract: Val d'Agri is a recent SSW - NNE graben located in the middle of the Southern Apennines thrust belt chain and emplaced in Plio-Pleistocene.The recent sedimentation of the valley represents a local critical geophysical problem. Several strong near surface velocity anomalies and scattering degrades seismic data in different ways and compromises the seismic visibility. In 1998, ENI and Enterprise, with the contribution of the European Community (ESIT R & D project - Enhance Seismic In Thrust Belt; EU Thermie fund) acquired two experimental seismic and Resistivity lines across the valley. The purpose of the project was to look for methods able to enhance seismic data quality and optimize the data processing flow for thrust belt areas. During the work, it was clear that some part of the seismic data processing flow could be used for the detailed geological interpretation of the near subsurface too. In fact, the integrated interpretation of the near surface tomography velocity/depth seismic section, built for enhancing the resolution of static corrections, with the HR resistivity profile, acquired for enhancing the seismic source coupling, allowed a quite detailed lithological interpretation of the main shallow velocity changes and the 2D reconstruction of the structural setting of the valley.
