Cross-Network Information Dissemination in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs): Experimental Results from a Smartphone-Based Testbed

Abstract: In this work, we present an innovative approach for effective cross-network information dissemination, with applications to vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The proposed approach, denoted as "Cross-Network Effective Traffic Alert Dissemination" (X-NETAD), leverages on the spontaneous formation of local WiFi (IEEE 802.11b) VANETs, with direct connections between neighboring vehicles, in order to disseminate, very quickly and inexpensively, traffic alerts received from the cellular network. The proposed communication architecture has been implemented on Android smartphones. The obtained experimental results show that an effective cross-network information dissemination service can entirely rely on smartphone-based communications. This paves the way to future Internet architectures, where vehicles will play a key role as information destinations and sources.

Abstract: The Tenth International Symposium on Tardigrada took place in Catania, Italy from 18th to 23rd June 2006 and was held in the Auditorium of Benedettini, a fascinating historic building in Catania's downtown. There were seventy-one participants at the Symposium, representing fourteen countries. The Symposium provided a unique opportunity both to review the progress of tardigrade studies and to allow all delegates to meet and to discuss topics of common interest. The Symposium included thirty-four lectures and thirty-one poster presentations on a wide variety of topics in tardigrade biology. They included systematics, morphological and molecular phylogeny, faunal studies, biogeography, ecology, survival strategies, and modern molecular methodologies in tardigrade research. The twenty-four papers appearing in this special issue of the Journal of Limnology represent most of the contributors present in Catania.
Asymmetric correlation matrices: an analysis of financial data

Abstract: We analyze the spectral properties of correlation matrices between distinct statistical systems. Such matrices are intrinsically non symmetric, and lend themselves to extend the spectral analyses usually performed on standard Pearson correlation matrices to the realm of complex eigenvalues. We employ some recent random matrix theory results on the average eigenvalue density of this type of matrices to distinguish between noise and non trivial correlation structures, and we focus on financial data as a case study. Namely, we employ daily prices of stocks belonging to the American and British stock exchanges, and look for the emergence of correlations between two such markets in the eigenvalue spectrum of their non symmetric correlation matrix. We find several non trivial results, also when considering time-lagged correlations over short lags, and we corroborate our findings by additionally studying the asymmetric correlation matrix of the principal components of our datasets.
Anhydrobiosis: the extreme limit of desiccation tolerance

Abstract: Extreme habitats give rise to strong stressors that lead organisms to die or to possess specific adaptations to those stressors. One of the most widespread adaptations is quiescence, a common term for several strategies, including anhydrobiosis, a highly stable state of suspended animation due to complete desiccation pending recovery by rehydration. Anhydrobiosis is widespread in nature in a wide taxonomic variety among bacteria, protists, metazoans and plants. Using as model organisms, mainly tardigrades, micrometazoans able to enter anhydrobiosis in any phase of their life cycle from egg to adult, this review presents the response to desiccation from molecules to cells and organisms. Particular emphasis has been done with studies devoted to elucidate phenomena such as the long-term resistance in a desiccated state, the extraordinary resistance to chemical and physical extremes, the morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular constraints allowing organisms to enter and to survive anhydrobiosis, and the evolutionary meaning of life without water.
Expression of the 70 kDa Heat shock protein family in Alpine freshwater chironomids (Diptera, Chironomidae) under natural conditions

Abstract: Chironomidae represent up to 100% of the fauna of Alpine streams. Because they survive stress conditions such as extremely low temperature (annual mean <4 °C), these animals represent a good organism model to analyze the relationship between adaptation to cold and expression of stress proteins such as the 70 kDa Heat shock protein family. Fourth instar larvae of ten species of coldstenothermal chironomids (Pseudodiamesa branickii, Diamesa latitarsis, D. laticauda, D. cinerella, D. insignipes, D. zernyi, D. vaillanti, Orthocladius (O.) frigidus, O. (Euorthocladius) thienemanni and Paratrichocladius nivalis) were collected in a glacier-fed stream in NE Italy at two stations (1300 and 2600 m a.s.l.) and in two seasons (summer 2005 and spring 2006). Immunodetection and quantification of the relative levels of Hsp70 family were performed via Western blot analysis. Significantly different levels of Hsp70 were detected among species. The highest amounts were recorded in P. nivalis and D. insignipes, the lowest in P. branickii. Within the genus Diamesa, lower levels of Hsp70 were observed in the most cold-stenothermal species than in the less coldstenothermal ones. These differences may be explained by different species autoecology. The results provide information on biochemical strategies of alpine midges to face cold temperatures under natural conditions and new insights into their possible response to global warming.

Abstract: Secondary loan sales give originating banks the opportunity to diversify part of their credit risk by selling loans to other market participants. However, as originating banks are less exposed to risk after secondary loan sales, their incentives to monitor borrowers diminish. Secondary loan sales therefore involve a trade-off between diversification benefits and sub-optimal monitoring. We explore this trade-off within a theoretical model. The results show that in equilibrium loans trade at a discount because monitoring effort is sub-optimally low. We illustrate how this inefficiency is related to lack of transparency in the secondary loan market, and provide policy implications to address this problem.
Epidemic Propagation: An Automaton Model as the Continuous SIR Model  [PDF]

Abstract:

The use of the SIR model to predict the time evolution of an epidemic is very frequent and has spatial information about its propagation which may be very useful to contrast its spread. In this paper we take a particular cellular automaton model that well reproduces the time evolution of the disease given by the SIR model; setting the automaton is generally an annoying problem because we need to run a lot of simulations, compare them to the solution of the SIR model and, finally, decide the parameters to use. In order to make this procedure easier, we will show a fast method that, in input, requires the parameters of the SIR continuous model that we want to reproduce, whereas, in output, it yields the parameters to use in the cellular automaton model. The problem of computing the most suitable parameters for the reticular model is reduced to the problem of finding the roots of a polynomial Equation.

Vulvar Dermatoses: Effect of a Synergistic Treatment with a Moisturizing and Healing Product on the Course of the Disease  [PDF]

Abstract:

Background: Vulvar dermatoses are inflammatory disorders of genital skin causing itch, burning, and plaques with overlying excoriation and linear fissures. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of a soft foam based on Tiab® system (TF), complex of titanium micro crystals covalently bound with silver ions associated with hyaluronic acid, in the supportive treatment of lichen sclerosus (LS) and lichen simplex chronicus (LSC), the two common vulvar dermatoses. Method: 20 patients with the diagnosis of LS or LSC received an 4-week treatment, during which the subjects applied Mometasone furoate in the form 0.1% cream were treated with Mometasone furoate 0.1% cream in combination with TF once a day. Clinical symptoms (itching and burning) and signs (vulvar suface disruption) were documented at baseline and at the end of the four-week treatment. Results: There was a significant reduction of symptoms between the basal scores and the symptoms complaints at 4-week treatment. Moreover, a significant reduction of excoriations and linear fissures was observed. Conclusion: The present study shows that daily application of TF can be an effective adjunct for the treatment of vulvar dermatosis. The foam had not only a moisturizer action, it may also be associated with a reduction in epithelial disruption in the form of excoriations and fissures.

Effective Treatment of Vulvar-Vaginal Complaints in Women Taking Combined Oral Contraceptive with a New Medical Device in Gel: A Pilot Study  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To assess efficacy and tolerability of a new medical device in gel based on the synergic combination of NioskinTM Red Clover Extract noisome (NRC) and SylTechTM system (SB), a complex of silicium microcrystals covalently bound with silver ions associated with hyaluronic acid to the treatment of vulvo-vaginal dryness and dyspareunia in women taking combined oral contraceptive (COC). Methods: Forty eight women were treated for 12 weeks with NRC + SB vaginal gel (0.75 g/day) for 3 weeks. After therapy, symptoms (dyspareunia and dryness) were evaluated through a 10-cm VAS. Visual examination of the vagina and vulvar vestibule was also conducted, which included observations for petechiae, pallor, friability, dryness, and redness in the mucosa. Ratings were based on a 4-point scale (0, none; 1, mild; 2, moderate; 3, severe). Results: NRC + SB vaginal gel appears to be effective for relief vulvo-vagianl dryness and dyspareunia and an improvement of vaginal and vestibular trophism was noted. Conclusion: NRC + SB vaginal gel proved good treatment options for relief of vulvovaginal symptoms in women who take COC.
Entropic localization in non-unitary Newtonian gravity

Abstract: The localizing properties and the entropy production of the Newtonian limit of a nonunitary version of fourth order gravity are analyzed. It is argued that pure highly unlocalized states of the center of mass motion of macroscopic bodies rapidly evolve into unlocalized ensembles of highly localized states. The localization time and the final entropy are estimated.
