Abstract: this paper presents the results of a three-year evaluation performed on the first cohorts of chile solidario, the most important anti-poverty program in chile. the paper presents a description of the program, emphasizing the mechanism by which people were admitted into the program. we then propose evaluation strategies and discuss their validity. the final evaluation is conducted using a matching estimator, and we discuss the principles surrounding the potential for this to be a valid evaluation method. the initial results using the chile solidario panel suggest that the program had positive effects on psychosocial welfare and on take-up of subsidies and social programs. however, it is not possible to obtain reliable results due to data shortcomings, particularly the lack of baseline data. in order to solve the problem, we generated a database using six years of administrative data, including around 1,000,000 family records per year. a method for overcoming the treatment substitution problem is discussed and implemented. results are much more robust than those of the chile solidario panel and show small, but clearly positive effects for several variables, especially the number of workers in the family, the percentage of workers in the family and the employment of the head of the family.

Abstract: in 1975, a body wrapped in several layers of textiles was found in the coyo oriente cemetery by r.p. le paige. in 1995, we were given the opportunity to participate in the unwrapping of the body along with misión conklin. this allowed us to observe and record the distinct layers of textiles that composed the funerary bundle. the obvious differences between the layers and the identification of the exterior tunic, containing tiwanaku techniques and iconography, made this study a rare and interesting occasion to document the local customs reflected in the bundle. this analysis has furthered our understanding of the identity of this person and the recurrence of this burial pattern. all the existing textiles that belong to this bundle, including the three tunics which define it, are presented

An integrated approach of analytical chemistry
Guardia, Miguel de la;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50531999000600002
Abstract: the tremendous development of physical methods of analysis offers an impressive number of tools to simultaneously determine a large number of elements and compounds at very low concentration levels. todays analytical chemistry provides appropriate media to solve technical problems and to obtain correct information about chemical systems in order to take the most appropriate decisions for problem solving. in recent years the development of new strategies for sampling, sample treatment and data exploitation through the research on field sampling, microwaveassisted procedures and chemometrics, additionally the revolution of the analytical methodology provided by the development of flow analysis concepts and process analysis strategies offer a link between modern instrumentation and social or technological problems. the integrated approach of analytical chemistry requires correctly incorporating the developments in all of the fields of both, basic chemistry, instrumentation and information theory, in a scheme which considers all aspects of data obtention and interpretation taking also into consideration the side effects of chemical measurements. in this paper, new ideas and tools for trace analysis, speciation, surface analysis, data acquisition and data treatment, automation and decontamination, are presented in the frame of analytical chemistry as a problem solving strategy focused on the chemical composition of systems and on the specific figures of merit of the analytical measurements, like accuracy, precision, sensitivity, selectivity but also speed and cost. technological and industrial, but also environmental, health and social problems, have been considered as challenges for which solution the chemist should select the most appropriate tool and to develop an appropriate strategy.

Abstract: background and objectives: it is considered that the gadolinium salts used as a contrast medium in the magnetic resonance imaging (mri) studies present an index of adverse reactions below the iodine contrast mediums. the main objective of this study is to determine, in our medium, the frequency and intensity of the adverse reactions related to the administration of gadopentotate dimeglumine (gd-dtpa) and compare it with the rate of adverse reactions induced by the iodine contrast mediums. material and methods: during the period comprised between 1st of january 2005 and 30th of june 2006, the adverse affects were collected for all the studies by means of mri in which the gd-dtpa contrast was applied, programmed or urgent, performed in eresa diagnosis centres by image located ( 11 centre in total) in the provinces of castellón and valencia. the adverse effects induced by the iodine salts were also collected in this period. results: a total of 54,909 studies with magnetic resonance were performed in the refered study centres, and 12,791 studies with mci. the total of adverse reactions observed was 62 (0.11%) and 47 (0.36%) respectively. the profile of adverse reactions with both contrast mediums was similar, except in the moderate reactions where we objectively observed a greater percentage of palpebral edema and dyspnea with the usage of mci than with gd-dtpa. no cases of anaphylaxia or exitus were observed. conclusions: the data contributed by this series support a safety profile of gadolinium superior to that of the mci in line with the results shown by extensive published series.

Abstract: objectives: our goal is to analyze the degree of concordance between the gleason score (gs) obtained in prostate biopsies and the one after radical prostatectomy. the intention is to know whether 12-core biopsy, instead of 6 (sextant biopsy), improves, or not, this correlation. methods: a cohort/prevalence study was conducted on 128 patients who underwent prostate biopsy and subsequent radical prostatectomy. patients showing biopsy gleason values greater or equal to 6 were selected as candidates for radical prostatectomy. results: mean age of the group of 128 patients was 62.9 years, with a mean psa value of 8.53ng/ml. there was concordance between biopsy gleason score and that obtained after radical prostatectomy in 63.28% of cases, while discordance was found in 36.72% of cases. there were not significant statistical differences after comparing results obtained between gleason score concordance after 6 or 12-core biopsies and that obtained after radical prostatectomy. conclusions: we have noticed a low correlation between gleason score after biopsy when it was com-pared with that obtained after radical prostatectomy, while these results are similar to those found in the literature. we did not find better results regarding gleason score correlation after biopsies performed with 12 cores instead of 6.
