Technique analysis and pacing strategy in flatwater canoeing

Abstract: The objective of this paper was to describe the new trends in technique analysis and pacing strategy in flatwater canoeing. Qualitative technique analysis were presented though out the descriptive and discriminative evaluation, while quantitative technique analysis were described by means of evolution of speed, cycle frequency, cycle length and cycle index. On the other hand, the different factors witch affects the right choice of pacing strategy and the most used race patterns in international competitions were analyzed.

Abstract: The creation of specific test or batteries of test are contributing to increase the knowledge of the sportsmen/women and to achieve the maximum sports performance. From the analysis of the characteristics of a sport like canoe polo, the aim of this paper is to propose a battery of test for canoe polo, as well as the method to carry out it. The battery of test is composed by the following test: throwing a ball of 3 kg; 15 m test; 5 x 10 m test; 20 x 20 m test; and finally driving in zigzag.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to determine the sagittal spinal morphology of thoracic and lumbar spine in relaxed standing and sitting on the bycicle in master 40 cyclists. a total of 50 master 40 male cyclists (mean age: 44.02 ± 2.51 years) were evaluated. the spinal mouse system was used to measure the sagittal thoracic and lumbar curve in standing and sitting on the bicycle at three different handlebar-hand positions (high, medium, and low). the values for thoracic and lumbar curvatures in standing were 49.42 ± 9.00 and -22.74 ± 9.38, respectively. a high frecuency of thoracic hyperkyphosis in standing was observed (68%). when sitting on the bicycle the thoracic curve showed lower angles in the three handlebar.hand positions that in standing. the lumbar curve adopted a kyphotic posture. the standing thoracic hyperkyphosis in master 40 cyclists may be related to other factors than the posture adopted on the bicycle.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to describe kinanthropometric characteristics of young male sprint canoeists and to compare their somatotype and proportionality with olympic paddlers. thirty three young sprint canoeists, aged 15 and 16 years old, were assessed using a battery of 41 anthropometric dimensions. body composition, somatotypes and phantom z-scores were calculated. mean somatotype of male canoeists was best described as balanced mesomorphy. young canoeists had lower ratings of mesomorphy and lower proportional dimensions in upper body girths and breadths than olympic paddlers. the data provided in this study could be used as a guideline for talent identification in sprint canoeing.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to determine the sagittal spinal morphology of thoracic and lumbar spine in young kayakers. a total of 66 young sprint kayakers, 36 males and 30 females (mean age: 16,22 ± 0,80) participated in the study. sagittal spinal curvatures of thoracic and lumbar spine in standing, lying prone and maximal trunk flexion with knees extended (sit-and-reach test) were measured with a spinal mouse. thoracic kyphosis was higher in males than in females in all three analyzed postures, although greater differences were found in the sit-and-reach test. the frequency of thoracic hyperkyphosis was higher in males (42.1%) than in females (21.4%). the angular values when lying prone were more reduced than in standing (p < 0.001). paddlers with thoracic kyperkyphosis showed a reduced thoracic angle when lying prone (37.85 ± 9.42) than in standing (50.95 ± 5.12). no significant differences between sexes were found in the lumbar curve. a predominance of neutral angular values was found in the lumbar curve (81.6% in males and 75.0% in females). in conclusion, the sagittal spinal morphology showed a trend toward thoracic hyperkyphosis in junior kayakers, specially in males. however, these curves were non-structural deformities. lumbar spine showed a high percentage of neutral values. kayak training is associated to improved lumbar intervertebral flexion and increased lumbar hyperkyphotic postures. it is necessary to include postural training to improve the spinal morphology of young paddlers.
Evolución de la Morfología del Raquis e Inclinación Pélvica en Ciclistas de Diferentes Edades: Un Estudio Transversal

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the sagittal spinal morphology and pelvic tilt in standing in three different age-group cyclists who had the same cycling experience and training volume. a total of 65 cyclists were divided in three age-groups: group 1: ( 30 years old; n = 20); group 2 (between 31 y 40 years old; n = 25); and group 3 ( 41 years old; n = 20). the spinal mouse was used to measure sagittal thoracic and lumbar spine and pelvic tilt in standing on the floor. the mean values for thoracic and lumbar spine and pelvic tilt were: group 1, 46.60 ± 10.09; - 26.40 ± 7.17; 13.20 ± 4.94; group 2, 47.64 ± 8.58; -26.92 ± 6.34; 12.24 ± 4.45; and group 3, 50.75 ± 12.77; -20.70 ± 10.10 y 8.15 ± 8.21, respectively. significant differences were found for the lumbar spine and pelvic tilt in the groups 1 and 2 with respect to group 3. in conclusion, aging is a conditional factor to the sagittal spinal morphology and pelvic tilt in cyclists who present the same years of experience and training volume in cycling.

Abstract: El objetivo de este trabajo fue describir y comparar las características antropométricas, maduración, somatotipo y proporcionalidad de mujeres kayakistas de aguas tranquilas y slalom. Cincuenta palistas de 13 a 14 a os de edad (26 de aguas tranquilas y 24 de slalom), fueron valoradas usando una batería de 29 medidas antropométricas. Se calculó el porcentaje de grasa, el somatotipo, los valores Z utilizando la estrategia Phantom de proporcionalidad y la maduración expresada como los a os hasta/desde la edad de máxima velocidad de crecimiento en altura. Las palistas de aguas tranquilas se caracterizaron por una mayor talla y talla sentado que las de slalom, lo que podría interpretarse como un mayor desarrollo madurativo de las primeras. Los valores de proporcionalidad fueron similares en la mayoría de las variables analizadas. Ambos grupos de kayakistas presentaron un somatotipo medio clasificado como mesomorfo endomorfo, siendo las palistas de slalom las que presentaron un somatotipo más heterogéneo. La información aportada en este estudio puede ser utilizada como guía en el proceso de detección de talentos en mujeres kayakistas de aguas tranquilas y slalom. índices Antropométricos en Canoístas de Elite Jóvenes de Aguas Tranquilas Anthropometric Indexes in Young Elite Male Sprint Canoeists

Abstract: El objetivo de este estudio fue describir las características de los índices antropométricos en canoístas de categoría cadete. A un total de 33 canoístas se les valoró peso, talla, envergadura, talla sentado, perímetros de la cintura y cadera, longitudes del brazo y antebrazo, así como diámetros biacromial y biileocrestal. Se calculó el índice de masa corporal (IMC), ratio cintura-cadera, envergadura relativa e índices córmico, de Manouvrier, acromio-iliaco y braquial. La mayor parte de los canoístas de categoría cadete obtuvieron valores propios de normopeso respecto al IMC, valores bajos de ratio cintura-cadera y una envergadura mayor que la altura. Existe una mayor variedad respecto al resto de índices estudiados, dándose un mayor número de casos de tronco medio para el índice córmico, extremidades inferiores largas para el índice de Manuovrier, tronco trapezoidal e intermedio para el índice acromio-iliaco y antebrazo medio y corto para el índice braquial. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of the anthropometric indexes in male young sprint canoeists. Body mass, stature, sitting height, arm spam, waist and hip girths, arm and forearm lengths and biacromial and biiliocristal breaths were measured in the 33 canoeists. Anthropometric indexes were obtained: body mass index, waist-hip ratio, relative arm spam and cormic, Manouvrier's, acromial-iliac and brachial indexes. Most paddlers had a healthy weight for height, a low waist-hip ratio, and a higher arm span than stretch stature. Results were more varied in other indexes, with a higher number of paddlers who had intermediate trunk length for Cormic index, long lower limbs for Manouvrier index, intermediate an trapezoidal trunk shape for acromial-iliac index and a medium and short forearm length for brachial index.
Morfología Sagital del Raquis en Palistas Jóvenes de Alto Nivel Sagittal Spinal Morphology in Young Highly-Trained Paddlers

Abstract: El objetivo fue valorar la morfología raquídea del raquis torácico y lumbar en piragüistas de la modalidad de kayak de categoría cadete. A un total de 66 kayakistas de aguas tranquilas, 36 varones y 30 mujeres de categoría cadete (media de edad 16,22 ± 0,80 a os), se les evaluó mediante un Spinal Mouse la morfología sagital del raquis torácico y lumbar en bipedestación, decúbito prono y en flexión máxima del tronco en sedentación con rodillas extendidas (test sit-and-reach). La cifosis torácica en los varones fue superior en las tres posiciones analizadas, especialmente en el test sit-and-reach. El porcentaje de casos con hipercifosis torácica fue de un 42,1% en los varones y un 21,4% en las mujeres. Los valores angulares en decúbito prono fueron inferiores que en bipedestación (p < 0,001). Aquellos deportistas con hipercifosis torácica tenían un valor angular menor en decúbito prono (37,85 ± 9,42) que en bipedestación (50,95 ± 5,12). En la curva lumbar no se encontraron diferencias entre géneros en las posiciones evaluadas. En el raquis lumbar, predominaron las angulaciones consideradas normales (81,6% en varones y 75% en mujeres). En conclusión, la morfología sagital del raquis en kayakistas de categoría cadete se caracteriza por una tendencia a la hipercifosis torácica, especialmente en los varones, si bien se trata de curvas no estructuradas. En cuanto a la curva lumbar en bipedestación presenta un alto porcentaje de ángulos considerados normales. La práctica del piragüismo/canotaje de aguas tranquilas en su modalidad de kayak genera una mayor capacidad de flexión intervertebral lumbar, que produce un alto porcentaje de morfotipos cifóticos. Es preciso adoptar medidas de intervención postural para mejorar la morfología raquídea de los palistas de aguas tranquilas.
