Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, an optical sensor exploiting special electromagnetic waves-surface plasmon polaritons to probe interactions between an analyte in solution and a molecular recognition element immobilized on the SPR sensor surface, has been widely used in various realms, such as investigating biomolecular interactions and binding properties, detection of biological and chemical analytes, environmental monitoring, food safety and medical diagnostics. This paper reviews the development of SPR sensors and SPR commercial instruments, and emphatically introduces the time-resolved surface plasmon resonance (TR-SPR) techniques. The excellent performances of high sensitivity and rapid detection are easily achieved with TR-SPR spectrometer, whereas the traditional SPR spectrometer cannot be accomplished. Therefore, TR-SPR spectrometer is appropriate for real time analysis of bio-recognition events and small molecular dynamics. However, only two commercial TR-SPR instruments have been exhibited at present, Thermo FT-SPR 100 and Autolab ESPRIT (SPRINGLE). Unfortunately, the high-priced instruments are not suitable for extensive applications in laboratories at present. Herein, a novel commercial TR-SPR spectrometer has been introduced in this review.
Expression of NSE and AFI in Fatal Lamb’s Lungs before and after Relieving Ureteral Obstruction  [PDF]

Abstract: Aims: to evaluate the Expression of NSE and AFI before and after relieving ureteral obstruction in fatal lamb’s lungs with unilateral hydronephrosis. Study Design and Subjects: Forty-five pregnant lambs were randomly divided into 3 groups. Eighteen lambs were in the hydronephrotic model group. The second group included 9 lambs in which ureteral obstruction was relieved 3 weeks after the initial operation. Eighteen lambs were in the control group which was just performed open hysterotomies. Outcome measures: The amniotic fluid index (AFI) and the expression of neuronspecific enolase (NSE) in the lungs were tested. Results: In the hydronephrotic model group, the AFI was less and the expression of NSE was greater than the control group. The AFI and expression of NSE were similar to the control group after relieving the ureteral obstruction. Conclusions: The AFI and expression of NSE return to normal after after relieving the ureteral obstruction, which meant that relieving ureteral obstruction is perhaps beneficial to lung development.
Minimax Probability Machine Multialgorithmic Fusion for Iris Recognition

Abstract: This study presents an iris recognition method based on multialgorithmic fusion. Fusion of multiple algorithms for biometric verification performance improvement has received considerable attention. The proposed method combines two kinds of iris recognition algorithms: one is based on phase information and the other is based on zero-crossing representation. Two algorithms are fused at the matching score level and a novel fusion strategy based on Minimax Probability Machine (MPM) is applied to generate a fused score which is used to make the final decision. The experimental results on CASIA and UBIRIS iris image databases show that the proposed multialgorithmic fusion method can bring obvious performance improvement compared to the individual recognition algorithm. The comparison among all fusion strategies also demonstrates that the fusion strategy based on MPM can achieve better performance than traditional fusion strategies.
Human Susceptibility to Framing Effect in Decisions Can Be Reflected in Scalp Potentials  [PDF]

Abstract:

Humans are susceptible to a famous decision bias named framing effect, which refers that people make different decisions in two decision questions that are intrinsically the same but described in different ways. This intriguing phenomenon has been widely studied with behavioral methods, animal models, and fMRI technique. To date, it’s still unknown whether human susceptibility to this intriguing decision bias can be reflected in scalp potentials. We recorded subjects’ scalp potentials when they decided between risky options and sure options, which were described in positive or negative way. We found that subjects’ brain potential significantly differed between when their choices were consistent with framing effect and when not. More significantly, we found that their susceptibility to framing effect could be reflected in their scalp potentials. Further research in this line can possibly help minimize framing effect bias.

Abstract: Solid nanocatalyst aluminum dodecatungstophosphate (Al0.9H0.3PW12O40, abbreviated as AlPW) with nanotube structure was synthesized through a natural cellulose fiber template. The AlPW nanotubes, which are highly water-tolerant and acid-tolerant, can be described as green double acids, as they combine both Br nsted and Lewis acid sites. They have been applied as an efficient nanoheterogeneous catalyst for the preparation of biodiesel from waste cooking oil containing 26.89 wt% high free fatty acids (FFAs) and 1% moisture via esterification of FFAs and transesterification of triglycerides in one pot under mild conditions.
Comparative transcriptional profiling under drought stress between upland and lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) using cDNA-AFLP

Abstract: The continuous growth of lowland rice (LR) in paddy fields supplied with enough water over the years, and of upland rice (UR) in naturally rain-fed soils, has resulted in greater resistance to drought stress in UR compared to LR. To elucidate their differential regulation mechanisms of drought-resistance, genome-wide transcript regulation under drought stress in UR and LR was investigated using cDNA-AFLP. The results indicated that over 90% of gene expression was not affected by drought stress in the two rice genotypes, more than 8% was regulated by drought stress in both, and less than 1% was specifically expressed in UR or LR. Fifty-seven genes were specifically expressed in UR and thirty-eight specifically in LR. Genes specifically expressed in UR included cell rescue and defence genes functioning in drought-resistance, signal transduction molecules, nucleotides and amino acid biosynthesis genes required for plant growth, and the regulatory genes for growth and development. In LR, genes specifically expressed were related to protein and nucleotide degradation. Some genes were upregulated earlier in UR, and downregulated genes were inclined to be downregulated earlier in UR compared to LR, implying that more rapid regulation mechanisms caused earlier responses of UR to drought stress. Expression levels of upregulated genes in UR were higher than those in LR. The differences in gene expression between UR and LR could account for stronger regulation ability, more drought-resistance and superior growth of UR under drought stress compared to LR.
The growth dynamics of tumor subject to both immune surveillance and external therapy intervention

Abstract: Considering the growth of tumor cells modeled by an enzyme dynamic process under an immune surveillance, we studied in anti-tumor immunotherapy the single-variable growth dynamics of tumor cells subject to a multiplicative noise and an external therapy intervention simultaneously. The law of tumor growth of the above anti-tumor immunotherapy model was revealed through numerical simulations to the relevant stochastic dynamic differential equation. Two simulative parameters of therapy, i.e., therapy intensity and therapy duty-cycle, were introduced to characterize a treatment process similar to a tumor clinic therapy. There exists a critical therapy boundary which, in an exponent-decaying form, divides the parameter region of therapy into an invalid and a valid treatment zone, respectively. A greater critical therapy duty-cycle is necessary to achieve a valid treatment for a lower therapy intensity while the critical therapy intensity decreases accordingly with an enhancing immunity. A primary clinic observation of the patients with the typical non-hodgekin’s lymphoma was carried out, and there appears a basic agreement between clinic observations and dynamic simulations.

Abstract: In the title compound, [Ni(C12H7N2O4)2]·4H2O, the Ni atom is located at the centre of a distorted octahedron, formed by four N atoms and two O atoms from the same two tridentating chelated 6-carboxy-2,2′-bipyridine-6′-carboxylate (L) ligands. Face-to-face π-stacking interactions between inversion-related pyridine rings with centroid–centroid distances of 3.548 (3) and 3.662 (3) (perpendicular distances between the respective rings are 3.314 and 3.438 ) are found. Intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonds between water molecules and L ligands form R53(10), R65(14) and R55(12) rings and also a centrosymmetric cage-like unit of water molecules, which link eight adjacent NiII centers, forming a three-dimensional framework.

Acute toxicity study of tilmicosin-loaded hydrogenated castor oil-solid lipid nanoparticles

Abstract: Two nanoparticle doses were used for the study in ICR mice. The low dose (766 mg/kg.bw) with tilmicosin 7.5 times of the clinic dosage and below the median lethal dose (LD50) was subcutaneously administered twice on the first and 7th day. The single high dose (5 g/kg.bw) was the practical upper limit in an acute toxicity study and was administered subcutaneously on the first day. Blank HCO-SLN, native tilmicosin, and saline solution were included as controls. After medication, animals were monitored over 14 days, and then necropsied. Signs of toxicity were evaluated via mortality, symptoms of treatment effect, gross and microscopic pathology, and hematologic and biochemical parameters.After administration of native tilmicosin, all mice died within 2 h in the high dose group, in the low dose group 3 died after the first and 2 died after the second injections. The surviving mice in the tilmicosin low dose group showed hypoactivity, accelerated breath, gloomy spirit and lethargy. In contrast, all mice in Til-HCO-SLN and blank HCO-SLN groups survived at both low and high doses. The high nanoparticle dose induced transient clinical symptoms of treatment effect such as transient reversible action retardation, anorexy and gloomy spirit, increased spleen and liver coefficients and decreased heart coefficients, microscopic pathological changes of liver, spleen and heart, and minor changes in hematologic and biochemical parameters, but no adverse effects were observed in the nanoparticle low dose group.The results revealed that the LD50 of Til-HCO-SLN and blank HCO-SLN exceeded 5 g/kg.bw and thus the nanoparticles are considered low toxic according to the toxicity categories of chemicals. Moreover, HCO-SLN significantly decreased the toxicity of tilmicosin.
