Can Light-Shaped Visual Prompt Promote Individuals’ Lights off Behaviors More Effectively than Ordinary One?  [PDF]

Abstract: Lights off behavior makes contribution to energy saving, meeting the realistic requirements of building a sustainable society. Several studies investigated the effectiveness of prompt on energy saving behavior, but few focused on how to make prompt more effective by “packaging”. In this current study, light-shaped prompt was designed with inspiration from light itself and 18 washrooms were studied in an ABAB-B method to verify whether the light-shaped visual prompt could promote lights off behaviors more than ordinary one, with a duration of 9 weeks, during which a one-week follow-up was conducted 4 weeks after ABAB was finished, to investigate the sustained effect of light-shaped visual prompt on lights off behaviors. Study showed that light-shaped visual prompt could exert more effective influence on lights off behaviors than the ordinary one. Individuals’ lights off behavior persisted throughout the follow-up period. This study provided a new perspective for improving the effectiveness of prompt. But further study on more well-designed visual prompt of diverse shape was necessary for the maximization of effectiveness and expanded application.
Changes in Plasma Levels of Vasoactive Factors in Patients Undergoing Abdominal Surgery  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: To investigate the changes in plasma levels of endothelin (ET), nitric oxide (NO), prostacyclin (PGI2) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) in patients undergoing abdominal operation. Materials and Methods: Thirty cases of abdominal surgery (14 males, 16 females; mean age 48 ± 11 years, ranging from 24 to 70) were prospectively recruited: Twenty-four cases of cholelithiasis and cholecystitis, 2 cases of peptic ulcer and 4 cases of portal vein hypertension. At five different time points (1-3 days after hospitalization (T1), at surgery beginning, after anesthesia (T2) and at the first (T3), third (T4) and fifth day (T5) after surgery), plasma levels of ET-1, NO2-, NO3-6-keto-PGF1α and thromboxane B2 (TXB2), the latter two being stable metabolites of PGI2 and TXA2 respectively, were measured. Results: ET-1 levels increased significantly after anesthesia and surgery (T1 = 69.2 ± 10.7 vs. T2 = 82.4 ± 14.7 vs. T3 = 96.6 ± 22.8 pg/ml, p < 0.05). A Brief Analysis on the Two Chinese Versions of Pride and Prejudice from the Perspective of Ideology

Abstract: Pride and Prejudice, owing to its romantic and superb language, enjoys a great audience and has at least five Chinese versions in circulation. Among them are two versions which are translated by the most authoritative translators published in China: the version translated by Wang Keyi and the version translated by Sun Zhili. The former got its first edition in 1956 while the latter was first published in the year of 1994. In terms of the ideology, the different features of the versions are shown. Ideology, the “invisible hand” manipulating translation practice, has certain influence to the two Chinese versions. This thesis tries to analyze the influence of ideology in and out of the text to the versions of Pride and Prejudice, which will lead to a new way for the translation criticism in the future.
Maximum Principle for Delayed Stochastic Linear-Quadratic Control Problem with State Constraint

Abstract: This paper is concerned with one kind of delayed stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problems with state constraints. The control domain is not necessarily convex and the control variable does not enter the diffusion coefficient. Necessary conditions in the form of maximum principle as well as sufficient conditions are established. 1. Introduction In the classical case, many random phenomena are described by stochastic differential equations (SDEs), such as the evolution of the stock prices. However, there also exist many phenomena which are characteristic of past dependence; that is, their present value depends not only on the present situation but also on the past history. Such models may be identified as stochastic differential delay equations (SDDEs). SDDEs have a wide range of applications in physics, biology, engineering, economics, and finance. See [1–4] and the references therein. A stochastic control system whose state function is described by the solution of an SDDE is called a delayed stochastic system. This kind of stochastic control problem appears widely in different research fields; see, for example, [3, 5]. It is worth pointing out that the delayed responses make it more difficult to deal with the system, not only for the infinite dimensional problem, but also for the absence of It?'s formula to deal with the delayed part of the trajectory. One fundamental research direction for stochastic optimal control problems is to establish necessary optimality conditions—Pontryagin maximum principle. By the duality between linear SDEs and backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs), stochastic maximum principle for forward, backward, and forward-backward systems has been studied by many authors, including Peng [6, 7], Wu [8, 9], Xu [10], and Yong [11]. Recently, Peng and Yang [12] introduced a new type of BSDEs called anticipated BSDEs of the following form: in which the coefficient contains not only the values of solutions of present but also those of the future. A duality between linear SDDEs and anticipated BSDEs was established in [12], which gave a new way to study the maximum principle for delayed stochastic control problems. Along this line, [13] studied the maximum principle for delayed stochastic optimal control problems in which the control domain is assumed to be convex and both the control variable and its delay part enter the diffusion coefficient. Abstract: A kind of Subwavelength Planar Metallic Lenses (SPMLs) is proposed to realize far-field optical focusing in the visible range based on concentric rings with modulated width in a silver film. The width of each metallic ring is mutative so that the radiation fields of surface plasmon polaritons can be controlled and the relevant phase retardations can be modulated to make a beam focus at the desired position. For comparison, the Subwavelength Planar Dielectric Lenses (SPDLs) structured on silica glass with the same concentric ring shapes as SPMLs are analyzed, although without opaque metal coating on SPDLs, the computational results show that SPMLs can support higher intensity focal spot, narrower full-width half-maximum beam width, and longer depth of focus at the focal region under certain lens thickness due to the coupling of surface plasomon polaritons, diffracted evanescent waves and propagated electromagnetic waves.

Competition Between Wireless Service Providers: Pricing, Equilibrium and Efficiency

Abstract: As the communication network is in transition towards a commercial one controlled by service providers (SP), the present paper considers a pricing game in a communication market covered by several wireless access points sharing the same spectrum and analyzes two business models: monopoly (APs controlled by one SP) and oligopoly (APs controlled by different SPs). We use a Stackelberg game to model the problem: SPs are the leader(s) and end users are the followers. We prove, under certain conditions, the existence and uniqueness of Nash equilibrium for both models and derive their expressions. In order to compare the impact of different business models on social welfare and SPs' profits, we define two metrics: PoCS (price of competition on social welfare) and PoCP (price of competition on profits). For symmetric cross-AP interferences, the tight lower bound of PoCS is 3/4, and that of PoCP is 1.

Abstract: To financially evaluate an IT projects is to assess its financial feasibility, while the financial benefits are the core parameters of financial evaluation of IT projects. Therefore, correctly identifying the financial benefits of IT projects is the precondition to ensure the validity of the financial evaluation. Essentially, IT projects can be divided into productive IT projects and supportive IT projects. The paper analyzes the importance of identifying the financial benefits and introduces the meaning, characteristics and classification of financial benefits of IT projects. On this basis, the paper identifies the financial benefits of both productive IT projects and supportive IT projects and emphasizes the formation and specific calculation method of the two types of IT projects. For productive IT projects and supportive IT projects, the calculation of financial benefits should employ different methods.
Cooperative Loss Recovery for Reliable Multicast in Ad Hoc Networks  [PDF]

Abstract: Providing reliable multicast service is very challenging in Ad Hoc networks. In this paper, we propose an efficient loss recovery scheme for reliable multicast (CoreRM). Our basic idea is to apply the notion of cooperative communications to support local loss recovery in multicast. A receiver node experiencing a packet loss tries to recover the lost packet through progressively cooperating with neighboring nodes, upstream nodes or even source node. In order to reduce recovery latency and retransmission overhead, CoreRM caches not only data packets but also the path which could be used for future possible use to expedite the loss recovery process. Both analytical and simulation results reveal that CoreRM significantly improves the reliable multicast performance in terms of delivery ratio, throughput and recovery latency compared with UDP and PGM.
