CERNE , 2011,
Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of B and Ca concentrations on morphological responses and size of calli in Eucalyptus urophylla. Calli were obtained from the mid portion of hypocotyls removed from in vitro germinated seedlings. The callus structures were cultivated for 21 and 31 days, being kept in a modified N7 medium with concentrations of B (0; 25; 50; 100 and 200 μM H3BO3) and Ca (0; 3.75; 7.5; 11.25 and 15 mM CaCl2.2H2O). Size of calli, presence of roots, friability, viscosity, presence of globular structures on the surface and presence of pigments were analyzed. Overall, the shorter culture period (21 days) allowed better development of callus structures. The combination of 50 μM H3BO3 with 7.5 mM CaCl2.2H2O at 21 days, and 100 μM H3BO3 with 1.13 mM CaCl2.2H2O at 31 days, provided best results. Rhizogenesis responded differently according to B and Ca concentrations. Simultaneous omission of B and Ca inhibited the rhizogenesis, causing disruption of the callus, favored formation of globular and friable structures, with presence of anthocyanin. High concentrations of calcium promoted root induction in calli.

Abstract: Sheehan’s Syndrome (SS) occurs as a result of ischemic pituitary necrosis due to severe post-partum hemorrhage. We report a 41-year-old woman with a history of severe postpartum hemorrhage 18 years prior to presentation. During this period of time, she experienced severe fatigue. Three months prior to being admitted to our hospital, the patient started to notice alopecia, generalized edema and cognitive impairment. After proper investigation, laboratory tests and clinical findings indicated panhypopituitarism. In addition to neuroimaging and past medical history, SS was diagnosed and treatment started. We emphasize the importance of thorough investigation, further diagnosis and management of this condition (especially in third world countries), since SS is a neurological and endocrinological emergency and potentially life threatening.

Abstract: Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides (HMF) is an uncommon variant of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. It is more frequent in dark-skinned people, particularly children. The HMF diagnose is difficult, especially in early stages because this condition resembles benign skin diseases. Thus is histopathological analysis very important for the diagnosis. We report a case of a 7-year-old child with widespread HMF confirmed by histopathology that showed cells tagging along the dermal/epidermal junction and extending into the epidermis in a pattern of epidermotropism and focal cell aggregates in the epidermis (Pautrier’s microabscess). We demonstrate the importance of clinical suspicion for this cutaneous neoplasia in patients with hypopigmentated lesions.

Abstract: Annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma (AEGCG) is a rare granulomatous skin disease of unclear pathogenesis which belongs to the group of disorders in the skin and elastic fibers with similar clinical features of granuloma annulare (GA). This case report is intended to describe a rare hybrid pattern in histopathology demonstrating coexistence of AEGCG and GA. An endocrine disease, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), could contribute to the coexistence of both lesions, and this possibility must be included in the medical investigation.

Abstract: differences in distribution, prey species, season and social learning opportunities influence the feeding tactics used by marine mammals. here, we analyze the coordinated feeding behavior of the guiana dolphin, sotalia guianensis (van bénéden, 1864, delphinidae) and its relation to seasonality and the presence of calves. in a total of 201 feeding bouts, we observed four types of coordinated feeding tactics, which differed in frequency and in mean number of engaged individuals. tactics in which dolphins used their bodies to herd and capture prey were the most frequent, presenting a higher frequency and engaging a higher number of individuals, suggesting that these tactics are better for capturing fishes which form larger schools. furthermore, the seasons influenced the feeding behavior used by dolphins. during spring-summer, a longer duration of bouts and a larger number of individuals engaged in the feeding tactics was observed, which may be related to the seasonal spawning of larger schooling fish, such as sardinella brasiliensis (steindachner, 1879). calves were present in 95% of all coordinated feeding tactic occurrences. this study indicates a complete preference of dolphins for coordinating their actions to capture prey and for the first time reports the presence of calves in the coordinated tactics and jumps. this broadens the current knowledge of the guiana dolphin feeding tactics.

1. Introduction Annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma (AEGCG) is a rare granulomatous skin disease of unclear pathogenesis whichbelongs to the group of disorders inthe skin andelastic fiberswith similarclinical featuresof granuloma annulare (GA) and necrobiosis lipoidica [1]. Lesions of AEGCG are mostly found in middle-aged white women, usually located on sun-exposed areas and rarely on covered areas [2]. Clinically, AEGCG presents as papules and annular plaques with erythematous bordersand withatrophichypopigmented center growingcentrifugally [3]. The chronic course of this disease is a typical feature as the variable response to existing treatments [4]. Therefore, this case report is intended to describe and discuss a case of AEGCG, irresponsive to the treatment, associated with diabetes and rare hybrid pattern in histopathology demonstrating coexistence of AEGCG and GA. 2. Case Presentation A 54-year-old man presented with a one-year complaint of asymptomatic and diffuse skin lesions increasing gradually in number and size. These lesions first appeared on his upper limbs. His occupation was a house builder and he didnot report to work without shirt. The man’s personal history included diabetes. According to the patient, the control of diabetes did not change the evolution of the skin lesions. There was no known family history of similar skin changes. Dermatological examination revealed asymmetric erythematous papules and atrophic plaques with slightly elevated border and annular configuration on the neck, trunk (Figure 1), arms, and forearms (Figure 2). There was no mucosal lesion or nails change. The initial differential diagnoses included GA and leprosy. Direct mycological examination and anti-HIVwere negative. Figure 1: Atrophic plaques with slightly elevated border. Observe the annular pattern. Figure 2: Detail of the erythematous annular lesion. On histological examination of a skin biopsy taken from one of the forearm lesions, there was fragmentation of elastic fibers in the giant cell (Figure 3(a)) and
