Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-65552010000400002
Abstract: the aim of this paper is to understand the models for developing managerial competences in different types of brazilian multinationals. the main premise is that brazilian multinationals need to develop non local competences in their subsidiaries in order to compete on equal terms with established multinationals in the global market. the article is based on a research survey conducted with sixty-six foreign subsidiaries of thirty multinationals of brazilian origin. the results show that the development of non local competences is associated with four essential factors. subsidiaries with non local competence show greater insertion of the subsidiary in foreign business networks, location in dynamic competitive contexts, greater intensity of initiatives and a strong integration between headquarters and subsidiaries. the lack of initiatives and location in adverse contexts characterize the development of specific competences. lower insertion of the subsidiary in foreign business networks and less integration with the internal network characterize the development of local competences.

Abstract: the aim of this paper is to examine the importance of company size on the development of competencies. the central assumption is that small brazilian multinationals need to develop more organizational competencies relative to large multinationals. the data result from a survey that obtained responses from 92 brazilian companies (48 large multinationals and 44 small multinationals). statistical techniques of factor analysis and generalized linear modeling were used to check the influence of the size of the multinational on the development of competencies. the result shows that small brazilian multinationals develop more competencies abroad than large companies. therefore, at least for brazilian multinationals, as representatives of companies from emerging countries, size is a central aspect to explain the strategies for developing competencies abroad.

Internacionaliza o Acelerada de Empresas de Base Tecnológica: o Caso das Born Globals Brasileiras

Revista de Administra??o Contemporanea , 2012,
Abstract: The born global phenomenon has been made apparent, mainly in high technology sectors, which requires new theoretical understandings about the role of nascent and small international companies. This article analyzes the relationship between a company’s external environment in its country of origin, internal organizational factors and the factors relating to how some technology-based firms (TBFs) internationalize. A survey was applied to Brazilian TBFs. At the end of the data collection period, the first database generated 214 responses. Out of these, 85 (39.7%) were obtained from companies involved in some kind of business abroad. However, only 54 questionnaires were considered valid for this research. The data were analyzed using logistic regression statistical techniques. The results show that external factors influence the internationalization of TBFs more as compared to internal factors. Integration in the value chain and an entrepreneur’s ability to manage internationally are the factors that best distinguish the internationalization of born-global TBFs. Thus, this paper contributes to the discussion of the internationalization process of born-globals and TBFs, filling the gap regarding the importance of external, internal and entrepreneurial factors in these companies’ internationalization processes.
