/This paper describes and analyzes the process of design and implementation of an UrbanDesign Studio for third year architecture students at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Chile. This academic experience has allowed the faculty to pass on to the students all the necessary tools to approach the most relevant issues of the contemporary city, as well as the opportunity to debate about the pedagogical strategies under which future architects are being trained.The aim of this academic experience is to shift the focus of design exercises, from the development of architectural objects to a more profound understanding of the urban realm as the main field of action of every architectural intervention, in order to make students more aware about the city and Urban Design.

Abstract: popliteal artery entrampment is a rare condition, occurring in young subjects, that causes ischemia of the extremity. the anatomical background is the compression or occlussion of the popliteal artery caused by forced plantar or dorsal flexion. we report a 32 year-old sportsman who presented with gangrene of the right first toe and a history of three months of progressive claudication. the ankle-brachial index and pulse volume curve registries showed a severe ischemia below the knee. angiography showed a medial deviation of the popliteal artery associated to stenosis and aneurysm formation. a ct scan of the contralateral artery was normal. the patient was operated using a posterior approach, performing a reverse saphenous vein bypass graft and excising the popliteal artery. the postoperative period was uneventful

EVALUACIóN DEL íNDICE 0,01 CAPTURAS/TRAMPA/DíA COMO INDICADOR DE BAJA PREVALENCIA DE CERATITIS CAPITATA (Wiedemann) EN DURAZNOS IMPORTADOS
Corvalán L.,Lister;
Agricultura Técnica , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0365-28072004000100010
Abstract: the term "low prevalence of agricultural pests" is being used with ever-greater frequency in the varied trade negotiations dealing with forestry and agricultural products that the national organizations of phytosanitary protection in diverse countries conduct. in this context, the quarantine risk of allowing the entry of fresh peaches (prunus persicae l.), carrying the mediterranean fruit fly (ceratitis capitata wied.) coming from areas or countries with a captures/trap/day (ctd) of 0.01, was analyzed to see whether it would exceed the maximum risk, of a settlement every 20 years, that chile could hypothetically accept. the results obtained using the concept of maximum pest limit (lmp) for different units of peaches entering annually from an area with a ctd of 0.01, without taking additional quarantine measures, would exceed the risk of r = 0.05 (a settlement every 20 years) that chile being a country free from the pest could accept.
El campo educativo: Ensayo sociológico sobre su diferenciación y complejización creciente en Chile y América Latina
Corvalán R,Javier;
Estudios pedagógicos (Valdivia) , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-07052012000200018
Abstract: this article analyzes the increasing differentiation and complexity of the educational field in chile and in latin america starting from the theorization that pierre bourdieu' sociology has made of it. the make-up of the educational field is thought of as a social space of permanent quarrel for legitimacy among agents who have a variety of capitals. it is argued that this field, particularly in recent decades, has become more intricate and led to a shift in the agents' position, allowing for the incorporation of new ones based on educational economists, who function under the cultural and symbolic capital provided by human capital theory.
Oportunidades de innovar desde la biotecnología clásica: Un Estudio de Caso
Corvalán,Dora;
Ciencia, docencia y tecnolog?-a , 2007,
Abstract: this paper deals with a small business enterprise (pyme) owned by argentinian investors, established in the middle of the1980s as a spin off company producing legume inoculants, a microbiological supply in soy production. the company controls biotechnological processes enrolled within classical biotechnology. the study focused on the company and its learning process in pursue of capturing, adapting and transferring technology, considering its feedback with science and technology public agencies as an important factor. the company faces two realities: the dynamics of its chain production that has lead it to confront with international technological compliances, and the complex and uncertain internal reality. it is particularly interesting to analyze the developing of its dynamic capabilities as well as its strategy to be a leader within the local market and to gain an important share of the regional market while maintaining its competitive level with respect to international producers of legume inoculants.
El Esquema Cruzado como forma de Análisis Cualitativo en Ciencias Sociales
Corvalán,Javier;
Cinta de moebio , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-554X2011000300002
Abstract: this article analyses the epistemological and methodological bases of crossed diagram in the field of social sciences and especially in qualitative research, considering that the origin of this diagram is located in the cartesian coordinate system. such coordinates provide elements that are at the bases of analytic geometry and from it, we highlight three aspects that have been ‘exported’ in the use of this diagram by the social sciences: the logic of the opposites; ‘spacialisation’; and conceptual fecundity. from these three aspects, we analyse the contribution of structural linguistics and anthropological structuralism to this diagram, particularly regarding the goal of formalization in the social sciences. the article shows some of the uses given to this diagram by different contemporary authors, to end classifying those authors according to their analytical integration of epistemic and methodological aspects implicit in the cartesian coordinate system.
Biología molecular en Infectología: Parte I: Desarrollo y metodologías
CORVALáN R.,ALEJANDRO;
Revista chilena de infectología , 2002, DOI: 10.4067/S0716-10182002000100003
Abstract: eventhough molecular biology was iniciated at the end of the xix century, the discovery of the structure of dna is considered the beginning of this field. advances during 1960-1970 produced methods and technologies to study microorganisms at molecular level. in particular, the discovery of dna polymerase and the specificity of dna reanaturation are the bases for polymerase chain reaction, transcription mediated amplification, and branched dna methods useful for diagnosis and direct quantitation of infectious agents. finally, the complete genome sequence should ultimately result in new methods for diagnosing and treating infectious diseases
