Abstract: with the objective of estimating allele frequencies, and testing for population divergence for the csn1s1 locus, genotypes of animals from five goat populations; saanen (n = 97), alpine (n = 81) toggenburg (n = 92), local goats with external appearance similar to the murciana-granadina breed from central mexico (n = 26) and heterogeneous local animals denominated mosaico lagunero (n = 30), from northern mexico, were identified using pcr and xmn1 pcr-rflp methodology. for saanen, alpine and toggenburg, the sum of e and f alleles had the largest frequencies (from 0.468 to 0.789), while for the groups local murciana-granadina and mosaico lagunero the sum of the most frequent allelic groups (a* and b*), were 0.385 and 0.533 respectively. both local murciana-granadina and mosaico lagunero populations showed heterozygote excess (p < 0.08). the percentage of the total genetic variation (fst) explained by population differences was 5.16. there was genetic differentiation for most pair comparisons between populations (p < 0.05), excepting for alpine versus toggenburg, and toggenburg versus mosaico lagunero (p > 0.05). for saanen and alpine the frequencies of alleles e and f were similar to the same breeds previously analyzed in europe. therefore there are opportunities of increasing the frequency of the strong alleles for protein content gene assisted selection (gas) in these two breeds. for toggenburg the most frequent allelic groups were f (0.32) and b* (0.21). results indicate differentiation between most populations for this locus. moreover, heterozygote excess in local populations indicated breed admixture.

Abstract: objectives: to analyze the association between socioeconomic deprivation and mortality in the census tracts of barcelona and the distinct patterns of this association in the districts. methods: we performed an ecological, cross sectional study based on the 1,812 census tracts and the 10 districts of barcelona, using socioeconomic variables obtained from the 1991 census and mortality data for 1987-1995. a deprivation index was created through component analysis. descriptive analyses were performed and multivariate poisson regression models were adjusted. results: the greater the socioeconomic deprivation in the census tracts, the higher the mortality. the quartile with the greatest deprivation had a relative risk (rr) of mortality of 1.24 (95% confidence interval [ci], 1.22-1.27) in males and an rr of 1.05 (95% ci, 1.02-1.07) in females (compared with the quartile of census tracts with the lowest deprivation). this association varied according to district: in the old inner-city district (district 1), which had the highest mortality and the greatest deprivation, the rr was 1.57 (95% ci, 1.21-2.05) for males, while in district 8, which also has considerable deprivation, mortality was lower. conclusions: analysis of socioeconomic inequalities in mortality in census tracts in an urban area highlights special areas of risk not observed in analysis of districts.

Gaceta Sanitaria , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0213-91112004000200004
Abstract: objective: to assess whether 2 area-level socioeconomic indicators (one single and the other composite) are able to detect social inequalities in health. methods: we used the health interview survey of barcelona, 1992. perceived health status, the presence of chronic conditions, smoking, pap test, educational level and social class were analyzed. as area-level indicators, the percentage of unemployment and a deprivation index at census tract level were obtained from the 1991 census. the associations between area-based socioeconomic indicators and individual-level socioeconomic position, as well as the associations among both types of socioeconomic indicator and health, were analyzed. results: a clear positive association was found between small area-based socioeconomic indicators and individual-level indicators. similar effects were observed for different health outcomes among men as well as among women. for most of the outcomes analyzed, the differences were greater with the deprivation index than with unemployment. thus, in men the age-adjusted odds ratio (ora) of average, poor or very poor perceived health status was 2.0 (95% ci, 1.4-2.9) in the most disadvantaged unemployment quartile in relation to the least disadvantaged quartile while with the deprivation index the ora was 2.7 (95% ci, 1.9-3.9). for women these ora were 1.8 (95% ci, 1.4-2.4) and 2.4 (95% ci, 1.8-3.2), respectively. conclusions: area-based socioeconomic indicators, such as those available through the spanish census, can be applied in all members of a population and are useful for detecting social inequalities in health.
