Abstract: Axially chiral oxazoline–carbene ligands with an N-naphthyl framework were successfully prepared, and their coordination behavior with AuCl·SMe2 was also investigated, affording the corresponding Au(I) complexes in moderate to high yields.
Production of proinflammatory cytokines in the human THP-1 monocyte cell line following induction by Tp0751, a recombinant protein of Treponema pallidum

Abstract: The tissue destruction characteristic of syphilis infection may be caused by inflammation due to Treponema pallidum and the ensuing immune responses to the pathogen. T. pallidum membrane proteins are thought to be potent inducers of inflammation during the early stages of infection. However, the actual membrane proteins that induce inflammatory cytokine production are not known, nor are the molecular mechanisms responsible for triggering and sustaining the inflammatory cascades. In the present study, Tp0751 recombinant protein from T. pallidum was found to induce the production of proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1βand IL-6, in a THP-1 human monocyte cell line. The signal transduction pathways involved in the production of these cytokines were then further investigated. No inhibition of TNF-a, IL-1β, or IL-6 production was observed following treatment with the SAPK/JNK specific inhibitor SP600125 or with an ERK inhibitor PD98059. By contrast, anti-TLR2 mAb, anti-CD14 mAb, and the p38 inhibitor SB203580 significantly inhibited the production of all three cytokines. In addition, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), a specific inhibitor of NF-κB, profoundly inhibited the production of these cytokines. Tp0751 treatment strongly activated NF-κB, as revealed by Western blotting. However, NF-κB translocation was significantly inhibited by treatment with PDTC. These results indicated that TLR2, CD14, MAPKs/p38, and NF-κB might be implicated in the inflammatory reaction caused by T. pallidum infection.
Synthesis of chiral mono(N-heterocyclic carbene) palladium and gold complexes with a 1,1'-biphenyl scaffold and their applications in catalysis

Abstract: Axially chiral mono(NHC)–Pd(II) and mono(NHC)–Au(I) complexes with one side shaped 1,1'-biphenyl backbone have been prepared from chiral 6,6'-dimethoxybiphenyl-2,2'-diamine. The complexes were characterized by X-ray crystal structure diffraction. The Pd(II) complex showed good catalytic activities in the Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck–Mizoroki coupling reactions, and the (S)-Au(I) complexes also showed good catalytic activities in the asymmetric intramolecular hydroamination reaction to give the corresponding product in moderate ee.
Assessment of the immune responses to Treponema pallidum Gpd DNA vaccine adjuvanted with IL-2 and chitosan nanoparticles before and after Treponema pallidum challenge in rabbits

Abstract: Syphilis is a multistage, sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochete, Treponema pallidum (Tp). A significantly high incidence of syphilis has been reported in several countries, including China, and there is an urgent need for the development of efficacious vaccines against syphilis. DNA vaccines are a major breakthrough in the field of vaccination with several advantages over traditional vaccines. Animal model studies of Tp DNA vaccines have not been reported elsewhere but our previous reports describe the development of a single-gene Tp DNA vaccine and preclinical immunization study. In this study, chitosan (CS) nanoparticles were used as a vector and an interleukin-2 expression plasmid (pIL-2) as an adjuvant to enhance a TpGpd DNA vaccine candidate (pTpGpd) in a rabbit Tp skin challenge model. At week 8 after the first immunization, three rabbits from each group were used to determine cytokine measurements and spleen lymphocyte proliferation assay. pTpGpd in combination with pIL-2 wrapped with CS led to the greatest enhancement of anti-TpGpd antibodies and T-cell proliferation. During infection, levels of anti-TpGpd antibodies and T-cell proliferation were measured. Both the serum special IgG and IL-2, interferon-γ were significantly increased by the co-injection of the IL-2 plasmid compared with the injection of TpGpd DNA alone (P<0.05). Furthermore, IL-2 plasmid coinjection efficiently enhanced the antigen-specific lymphocyte proliferation response. Additionally, the ratios of positive skin lesions and ulcer lesions in groups immunized with pTpGpd were significantly lower than those of the pIL-2, CS or pIL-2 mixed with CS control groups (P<0.001). CS vectored and pIL-2 adjuvanted pTpGpd immunized animals exhibited the lowest rates of positive skin tests (8.33%) and ulcer lesions (4.17%) and the fastest recovery (42 d). These experiments indicate that co-injection of a pIL-2 plasmid with pTpGpd DNA vaccine wrapped with CS can significantly strengthen the long-term stability of immune response during infection, efficiently improve the protective effect against T. pallidum spirochetes infection and attenuate syphilitic lesion development.

Abstract: In the title compound, {[CdBr2(C16H16N2O4)]·H2O}n, the CdII ion is six-coordinated by a Br2O4 donor set, with four O atoms from two bridging 1,1′-(butane-1,4-diyl)bis(pyridinium-4-carboxylate) ligands. The ligands link the CdII ions into a zigzag chain extending along [0-11]. O—H...O and O—H...Br hydrogen bonds involving the uncoordinated water molecules connect the chains.

Abstract: Five new oxygenated pimarane diterpenes, named scopararanes C–G ( 1– 5) were isolated from the culture of a marine sediment-derived fungus Eutypella scoparia FS26 obtained from the South China Sea. The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of compounds 1– 5, were determined by CD spectroscopic analysis and comparison with literature data. All isolated compounds ( 1– 5) were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against MCF-7, NCI-H460, and SF-268 tumor cell lines by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2 H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method.
Outflow and hot dust emission in high redshift quasars

Abstract: Correlations of hot dust emission with outflow properties are investigated, based on a large z~2 non-broad absorption lines quasar sample built from the Wide-field Infrared Survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data releases. We use the near infrared slope and the infrared to UV luminosity ratio to indicate the hot dust emission relative to the emission from the accretion disk. In our luminous quasars, these hot dust emission indicators are almost independent of the fundamental parameters, such as luminosity, Eddington ratio and black hole mass, but moderately dependent on the blueshift and asymmetry index (BAI) and full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of CIV lines. Interestingly, the latter two correlations dramatically strengthen with increasing Eddington ratio. We suggest that, in high Eddington ratio quasars, CIV regions are dominated by outflows so the BAI and FWHM(CIV) can reliably reflect the general properties and velocity of outflows, respectively. While in low Eddington ratio quasars, CIV lines are primarily emitted by virialized gas so the BAI and FWHM(CIV) become less sensitive to outflows. Therefore, the correlations for the highest Eddington ratio quasars are more likely to represent the true dependence of hot dust emission on outflows and the correlations for the entire sample are significantly diluted by the low Eddington ratio quasars. Our results show that an outflow with a large BAI or velocity can double the hot dust emission on average. We suggest that outflows either contain hot dust in themselves or interact with the dusty interstellar medium or torus.
Outflow and hot dust emission in broad absorption line quasars

Abstract: We have investigated a sample of 2099 broad absorption line (BAL) quasars with z=1.7-2.2 built from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven and the Wide-field Infrared Survey. This sample is collected from two BAL quasar samples in the literature, and refined by our new algorithm. Correlations of outflow velocity and strength with hot dust indicator (beta_NIR) and other quasar physical parameters, such as Eddington ratio, luminosity and UV continuum slope, are explored in order to figure out which parameters drive outflows. Here beta_NIR is the near-infrared continuum slope, a good indicator of the amount of hot dust emission relative to accretion disk emission. We confirm previous findings that outflow properties moderately or weakly depends on Eddington ratio, UV slope and luminosity. For the first time, we report moderate and significant correlations of outflow strength and velocity with beta_NIR in BAL quasars. It is consistent with the behavior of blueshifted broad emission lines in non-BAL quasars. The statistical analysis and composite spectra study both reveal that outflow strength and velocity are more strongly correlated with beta_NIR than Eddington ratio, luminosity and UV slope. In particular, the composites show that the entire C IV absorption profile shifts blueward and broadens as beta_NIR increases, while Eddington ratio and UV slope only affect the high and low velocity part of outflows, respectively. We discuss several potential processes and suggest that dusty outflow scenario, i.e. dust is intrinsic to outflows and may contribute to the outflow acceleration, is most likely. A Framework of Research and Practice: Relationship between Work Engagement, Affective Commitment, and Turnover Intentions  [PDF]

There is a growing research interest in the topic of work engagement over the past years. In reference to Schauefeli, Salanova, Gonzalez-Roma & Bakker (2002) [1], work engagement is described as “a positive, fulfilling work-related state of mind that is characterized by vigor, dedication and absorption”. As compare to the researches based on the relationship between work engagement and organizational commitment and job performance, the existing researches on the relationship between work engagement and turnover intentions are far fewer. We theoretically discussed the relationship among work engagement, affective commitment and turnover intentions. Research results show that work engagement is negatively related to turnover intentions whereby affective commitment plays a regulating role. Affective commitment moderates the relationship between work engagement and turnover intentions whereby employees’ affective commitment is stronger and employees are more willing to invest effort in their work; hence, employees’ turnover intentions are reduced.
