Morphometric Changes in Talus of Club Foot A Gross Observation in Human Foetuses

Abstract: both the feet of six human foetuses of different age groups having unilateral club feet, were dissected for morphological study. six morphometric parameters considered for comparing gross anatomical changes in normal and deformed feet, were 1-maximum length of the talus, 2-longitudinal dimension of head of talus, 3-anterior trochlear breadth, 4-maximum medial talar height, 5-talar neck and calcaneal angle, 6-talocalcaneal angle. all the foetuses with congenital club feet have almost similar deformity of foot skeleton. the gross anomalies observed were the smaller size of club foot talus and increased medial and planter deviation of a stunted, misshapen head and neck region. a medial plantar subluxation of the navicular bone with a consequent deformity of the articular facets of the talar head was also observed. uniformity and consistency of anatomical abnormalities were striking features in present study.

Para su estudio morfológico fueron disecados ambos pies de seis fetos humanos de distintas edades, uno de los pies era zambo. Seis parámetros morfométricos fueron considerados para la comparación de graves alteraciones anatómicas en los pies normales y deformes; estos fueron: 1. Longitud máxima del talus, 2. Dimensión longitudinal de la cabeza del talus, 3. Ancho troclear anterior, 4. Altura medial máxima del talus, 5. Cuello talar y ángulo calcáneo, 6. ángulo talocalcáneo. Todos los fetos con pie zambo congénito tienen una deformidad similar del esqueleto del pie. Las anomalías graves observadas fueron el menor tama o del talus del pie zambo, aumento de la desviación media y retraso en el crecimiento plantar, deformación de la cabeza y región del cuello talar. También se observó una subluxación medial plantar del hueso navicular, con un consecuente deformidad de las facetas articulares de la cabeza del talus. La uniformidad y consistencia de las anomalías anatómicas fueron los rasgos más llamativos en este estudio.
Power Efficient Higher Order Sliding Mode Control of SR Motor for Speed Control Applications

Abstract: This paper presents a novel scheme for speed regulation/tracking of Switched Reluctance (SR) motors based on Higher-Order Sliding-Mode technique. In particular, a Second-Order Sliding-Mode Controller (SOSMC) based on Super Twisting algorithm is devel-oped. Owing to the peculiar structural properties of SRM, torque produced by each motor phase is a function of phase current as well as rotor position. More importantly, unlike many other motors the polarity of the phase torque in SR motors is solely determined by the rotor position and is independent of the polarity of the applied voltage or phase current. The proposed controller takes advantage of this property and incorporates a commutation scheme which, at any time instant, selects only those motor phases for the computation of control law, which can contribute torque of the desired polarity at that instant. This feature helps in achieving the desired speed regulation/tracking objective in a power efficient manner as control efforts are applied through selective phases and counterproductive phases are left un-energized. This approach also minimizes the power loss in the motor windings thus reducing the heat generation within the motor. In order to highlight the advantages of Higher-Order Sliding-Mode controllers, a classical First-Order Sliding-Mode controller (FOSMC) is also developed and applied to the same system. The comparison of the two schemes shows much reduced chattering in case of SOSMC. The performance of the proposed SOSMC controller for speed regulation is also compared with that of another sliding mode speed controller published in the literature.
Potential of Non Formal Basic Education in Promoting Women Education in Pakistan

Abstract: The present study aimed to assess the performance of a non-formal basic education (NFBE) schools project initiated in the province of Punjab with the assistance of the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). The study was conducted in 120 NFBE schools in four districts of Punjab and it lasted for a period of three months. It was a survey study in which data were collected from female teachers, officers of NFBE, students and their parents.100 NFBE school teachers, 20 officers of NFBE schools and 500 students and their parents participated in the study. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. It was found that the project is achieving its targets as planned. It also found that students’ drop-out rate was higher in NFBE schools and the teachers were not satisfied with job structure. It was further found that a proper media campaign might usefully be initiated to mobilize the community to participate in NFBE projects. The study recommended that learning materials be developed in different local languages.

Abstract: Instructional design refers to planning, development, delivery and evaluation of instructional system. It is an applied field of study aiming at the application of descriptive research outcomes in regular instructional settings. The present study was designed to critically review the process of instructional design at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU). It was survey study. Population of the study consisted of 120 academicians of different academic department of AIOU. Survey was conducted through questionnaire for academic staff. It was revealed that need assessment is not done before conceiving the outlines of a course. Also the course did not contain sufficient activities, picture and illustrations. It was also found that did not confirm the course objectives. The study recommended that proper of the course writers for distance learning may be arranged.

Abstract: This paper is based on research work conducted during 2008-2010 in Dera Ismail Khan (D. I. Khan) District, Pakistan, to investigate Socio-Economic Impacts of Dwarf Palm (Nannorhops ritchieana) and Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) on the local inhabitants. A questionnaire for data collection of Dwarf Palm was designed and local people were interviewed. The main Dwarf Palm (Mazri) areas are lying between the Koh-i-Surkh and Marwat hill and yielding about 1000 tons of mazri leaves annually. Date Palm plantations are concentrated in Paniala, Paharpur, Chawdwan and Dhakki. The prominent varieties grown in the area are Dhakki, Shakri, Gulistan, Zaidi, Hillawi, Basra, Azadi and khudarawi. Dhakki Dates are well-known among all other varieties. Total area under dates cultivation in the district is 100,000 hectares, with total production of 11,000 tons dates. An average yield of Dhakki-Dates y-1 ranges from 6500 to 7000 tons i.e., 75% of the total production of dates in the area and dried dates production ranges from 800 - 1000 tons·year-1. A significant population is involved in processing of mazri and date palm leaves to prepare different products. Dates have a tremendous potential for economic uplift of the people. But growers face limitations and challenges regarding lack of information about customers and markets, harvesting, processing, and packaging techniques and infrastructure for producing good quality fresh dates. Fruit dropping in date palm particularly in Dhakki variety has become a serious concern. More than 70% date fruits drop before maturity. If production and processing constraints are properly handled, this may have significant socio-economic impact on local inhabitants.
Role of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Diagnosis of Solitary Thyroid Nodules

Abstract: Introduction: This study was conducted at the Department of ear, nose, throat, head and neck surgery, Post Graduate Medical Institute Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. The duration of the study was one year from June 17, 2009 to June 16, 2010. The sample size was 82 patients with solitary thyroid nodule, fulfilling the inclusion criteria. After taking detailed history, thorough examination, relevant investigation and informed consent fine needle aspiration cytology was performed in all cases by the same cytopathologist. Thyroid surgery was performed and specimens were examined by the same histopathologist. The statistical analysis was performed using the statistical program for social sciences (SPSS version 11). Materials and Methods: Our study included 82 cases consisting on 57 female and 25 male, with female: male ratio of 2.28: 1.The age of the patients was ranged from 16-65 years with mean age of 42.56 + S.D 11.60 years. Most of the patients presented in 3rd and 4th decade followed by the 5th and 2nd decade. The diagnostic yield of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) in this study was accuracy 82.92%, sensitivity 88.09%, specificity 77.50% and positive predictive value was 80.43%. Results: One hundred twenty six patients entered the study among which 77 (61%) were female and 49 (39%) male. Mean age was obtained as 26.9 ± 7.7 yrs. Up to 79.4% of patients had complaints concerning the cosmetic outcomes, 39.7% with respiratory and 4.8% with olfactory problems. The reason to sue the physician had a significant relationship with the patients’ age and sex, and also with the surgeons’ experience. Conclusion: FNAC has key rule in diagnosis of solitary thyroid nodule because it is safe, minimally invasive and cost effective diagnostic tool.
Aromatic Plant Species Mentioned in the Holy Qura’n and Ahadith and Their Ethnomedicinal Importance

Abstract: In view of the importance of this study comprehensive detailed data was collected from Holy Quran, Ahadith`s books and books written on the Islamic medicines. Present findings confined to 15 Aromatic plant species belonging to 14 genera of 10 families. The plant species are: Acorus calamus L., Artemisia maritima L., Boswellia carterii Birdw., Boswellia serrata Birdw., Cinnamomum camphora L., Citrus spp., Commiphora molmol Engl. ex Tschirch, Crocus sativus L., Cymbopogon schoenanthus Spreng., Dryobalanops aromatica Gaertn. F., Lawsonia inermis L., Majorana hortensis Moench. Ocimum basilicum L., Origanum vulgare L. and Thymus serpyllum L. Results were systematically arranged by alphabetic order of botanical names followed by English name, Arabic name, family, parts used, medicinal uses and references cited from Holy Quran and Ahadith. The main aim of this study is to document the knowledge of ethno medicinal uses and create awareness about the Aromatic plant species mentioned in the Holy Quran and Ahadith for the welfare of human communities throughout the world.
Salvadora persica, Tamarix aphylla and Zizyphus mauritiana-Three Woody Plant Species Mentioned in Holy Quran and Ahadith and Their Ethnobotanical Uses in North Western Part (D.I. Khan) of Pakistan

Abstract: The present research work is based on Three woody plant species: Salvadora persica, L. Tamarix aphylla (L.) Karst. and Zizyphus mauritiana Lam. mentioned in the 16th Ayat of Sura Saba in Holy Quran and Ahadith. These plants were collected from Dera Ismail Khan District, NWFP, Pakistan, during 2007. This is a part of check list of medicinal flora and their uses enlisted in Holy Quran, Ahadith and Islamic literature. The main aim of this study is to document the knowledge of ethnobotanical importance of these plants in the light of Islam. In view of the importance of this study related comprehensive and detailed data was collected. Complete macro and microscopic detailed morphological features of these species were discussed. Results were systematically arranged by alphabetic order of botanical names, family followed by Quranic name, Arabic name, English name, Local/Vernicular name, habit and habitat, distribution, parts used, medicinal uses and references cited from Holy Quran, Ahadith. It is concluded that herbal medicines are being widely used in the world because of better cultural acceptability, least injurious with none or much reduced side effects.

Abstract:

N-body simulations of the Sun, the planets, and small celestial bodies are frequently used to model the evolution of the Solar System. Large numbers of numerical integrators for performing such simulations have been developed and used; see, for example, [1,2]. The primary objective of this paper is to analyse and compare the efficiency and the error growth for different numerical integrators. Throughout the paper, the error growth is examined in terms of the global errors in the positions and velocities, and the relative errors in the energy and angular momentum of the system. We performed numerical experiments for the different integrators applied to the Jovian problem over a long interval of duration, as long as one million years, with the local error tolerance ranging from 10-16 to 10-18.
