Experimental Infection of Calomys callosus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) by Toxoplasma gondii

Abstract: Calomys callosus, Rengger 1830 (Rodentia, Cricetidae), a wild rodent found in Central Brazil, was studied to investigate its susceptibility to Toxoplasma gondii experimental infection and its humoral immune response against this protozoa. The electrophoretic profile of the serum proteins of C. callosus showed that IgG, which shows no affinity to Protein A, has higher cross reactivity with rat IgG than with IgG from other rodents. The susceptibility assay was performed by inoculation groups of animals with various suspensions of T. gondii tachyzoites from 102 to 106 parasites. All animals died between 3 and 9 days after infection and the kinetics of antibody synthesis was determined. Basically, they recognized predominantly the immunodominant antigen SAG-1 (P30). The immunohistochemistry assays revealed that the liver was the most heavily infected organ, followed by the spleen, lungs, intestine, brain and kidneys. It can be concluded that C. callosus is an excellent experimental model for acute phase of Toxoplasma infection

The influence of water renewal rates on the reproductive and molting cycles of Penaeus paulensis in captivity

Abstract: the present study analyzed the reproduction of wild-caught penaeus paulensis in relation to its molt cycle. the experimental design consisted of two treatments (continuous water flow and batch renewal) with two replicates. the stocking density in experimental tanks (1.50 x 0.96m) was approximately 7 animals/m2, resulting in 4 males (23.9 ± 2.3 g) and 6 females (52.0 ± 5.5 g) per tank. shrimp had their uropods cut for individual marking and female maturation was induced through the unilateral eyestalk-ablation. the intermolt period of females and males (17.4 ± 3.2 and 17.8 ± 4.6 days, respectively), number of days between molting and the first spawn (6.9 ± 2.8 days) and number of spawns in the intermolt period (1.4 ± 0.5), presented no significant differences (p>0.05) between treatments. no influences on molt cycle or reproductive performance parameters could be related to differences in water quality parameters, especially nitrogenous compounds, suggesting a trend towards reduce water exchange in shrimp maturation. however, a relative decrease in the number of eggs per spawn was observed. this possibly was due to the smaller maturation tanks. the results of p. paulensis molt cycle could be useful for accompaniment and better planning of the reproduction in captivity.
AVALIA O DA SILAGEM DE CAPIM-ELEFANTE CV. NAPIER (Pennisetum purpureum) COM DIFERENTES TIPOS DE ADITIVOS

Abstract: The current work was made in an experimental Campus of Dr. Francisco Maeda University atItuverava-SP Brazil, with the proposal of avaliaty the percentages of dry material, raw protein and nitrogen insilage of elephant-grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) cv. Napier with different kiuds of additives. Thedelineate used was totally casual, with six treatments (T): T1: silage + 0.5% of urea; T2: silage + 10% of MDPS;T3: silage + 10% of soy bran; T4: silage + 10% of corn bran; T5: silage + 10% of wheat bran; T6: standard, withthree repetition. Considering the obtained results, was verified that the percentages of dry material (%MS) didn’tshow significant differences between the treatments. But for the percentage of raw protein (%PB) and nitrogen,the treatment that used 10% of soy bran in the silage of elephant-grass, showed results of 15,47% and 2,47%,respectively.O presente trabalho foi realizado na área experimental da Faculdade Dr. Francisco Maeda nomunicípio de Ituverava-SP, com o objetivo de avaliar as percentagens de matéria seca, proteína bruta e denitrogênio na silagem de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) cv. Napier com diferentes aditivos. Odelineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com seis tratamentos: T1: silagem + 0,5% de uréia; T2:silagem + 10% de Milho Desintegrado com Palha e Sabugo; T3: silagem + 10% de farelo de soja; T4: silagem +10% de farelo de milho; T5: silagem + 10% de farelo de trigo; T6: testemunha, com três repeti es. A partir dosresultados obtidos, verificou-se que as percentagens de matéria seca (%MS) n o apresentaram diferen asignificativa entre os tratamentos. Já para percentagem de proteína bruta (%PB) e de nitrogênio, o tratamentoque utilizou 10% de farelo de soja na silagem de capim elefante, apresentou melhor resposta com valores de15,47% e 2,47%, respectivamente.

Abstract: the cage culture of farfantepenaeus brasiliensis and farfantepenaeus paulensis was analyzed in the patos lagoon estuary using juveniles produced in captivity. mean initial weight of the juveniles was approximately 1.2g. the experiment was conducted in 6 cages (3 per treatment), with mesh size of 5mm and bottom area of 4m2, during 65 days. the individuals were randomly distributed into two treatments (f. brasiliensis e f. paulensis), keeping the stocking density of 20 shrimps m-2 in the experimental units (cages). each 15 days shrimps were weighted to adjust the amount of feed and to evaluate growth. in the end of the experiment, all the shrimp were weighed and counted to determine the survival. survival did not differ significantly between f. brasiliensis (94.17±9.04) and f. paulensis (98.50±0.71). although the mean final weight was significantly higher for f. brasiliensis (7.98±0.94g), there were no significant differences in terms of total biomass production (127.81±17.93 e 126.65±1.74g m-2) and apparent feed conversion ratio (1.39±0.27 e 1.57±0.09) between f. brasiliensis and f. paulensis, respectively. the results indicate that f. brasiliensis show potential to be cultured in alternative systems and motivate the development of the technological package for culture of this species in the patos lagoon estuary.

Abstract: O presente trabalho avaliou o perfil de anticorpos em amostras de soro de 37 pacientes com diagnóstico clínico confirmado ou compatível com leishmaniose tegumentar americana atendidos no Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Uberlandia, MG. Os perfis das classes de imunoglobulinas e subclasses de IgG foram analisados pelo teste ELISA indireto, utilizando-se antígeno solúvel de Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. A avidez dos anticorpos foi determinada pelo tratamento com uréia a 6 M, após incuba o dos soros com o antígeno. Observou-se que 97%, 94,6%, 57,5 e 21,5% das amostras testadas apresentaram anticorpos anti-Leishmania das classes IgE, IgG, IgA e IgM, respectivamente e, os perfis das subclasses de IgG demonstraram, IgG1>IgG3>IgG2>IgG4. Os anticorpos IgE anti-Leishmania de alta avidez corresponderam a 44,4%. Por outro lado, IgG e IgA anti-Leishmania foram em sua maioria (62,8 e 47,8%, respectivamente), de média avidez. A varia o do perfil de isotipos, bem como a avidez das imunoglobulinas refletiu a complexidade da resposta imune humoral contra a leishmaniose tegumentar americana.

Abstract: the article discusses the repercussions that the debate around the overcoming of modernity and the supposed coming of postmodernity has brought to education as a field of knowledge, and more particularly to the research in this field. a critical discussion is made of the thesis that we live in postmodernity, placing emphasis on this statement in the sphere of social thinking, especially for understanding that such expression does not have the strength and intensity of a philosophical concept, resulting devoid of meaning. it is stressed that of the first uses of that expression in the field of philosophy, by lyotard, was as an adjective, and not as a noun, which is significantly different. moving beyond the debate about the end of modernity or otherwise, the notion of hypermodernity proposed by lipovetsky is adopted as a way of characterizing the contemporary world and trying to understand its implications. notwithstanding that, the author recognizes the important contributions of the thesis that affirms postmodernity, especially in its epistemological and political aspects, in so far as it represents a shift of the focus of analysis. the text characterizes the current debate as the tension between two images of the thought that are not at all new, but that have gained special attention in contemporaneity, defending that we must accept this tension in what it brings in terms of a creative possibility, without paralyzing the thought.

Abstract: goffman's insights about foucault' s analyses can provide a considerable achievement about the subjectivity production processes knowledge in the contemporary society and, mainly at total institutions context, where they are so present. we consider that goffman's institutional analyses is between the macro (molar) and micro spheres of the phenomenon, that happen in closed institutions. he analyzes the non-discoursive practices, and subtlety articulates them, as the daily, apparently insignificant and bizarre "details" from institutional context makes us to realize the intra-institutional relations of microphysics plan, dipping into different strategies in which power itself branches, circulates, dominates and produces knowledges and subjects. we might say that goffman has already introduced the idea of power as a dynamical relation of strategies always achieved at all parts and places. foucault, reveals us how possible are disciplinary institutions and their reasons for emerging. they both are outstanding references to the institutional analyses.
