Numerical study on the combustion process of a biogas spark-ignition engine

Abstract: The fuel called biogas is obtained through anaerobic digestion of different types of organic waste, providing a way to tap the energy stored in organic matter. The use of this fuel is also attractive from the standpoint of global warming because its application does not register a net emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. One possible use for this fuel is to feed the spark-ignition internal combustion engines. In the present, there is little information available about the process of combustion in internal combustion engines fueled by biogas. The combustion process of an internal combustion engine ignition powered by biogas is characterized in terms of the duration of combustion, i.e., depending on the time elapsed while the reactants (methane and oxygen) are transformed into products (mainly carbon dioxide and water). This study numerically evaluates the way in which the geometrical parameters such as the compression ratio and operating parameters like engine speed, the excess air, the time of spark timing and carbon dioxide content of biogas affect the evolution of the combustion process. To carry out this study, a five factors and two levels experiment was designed and conducted, based on which, the most influential parameters were identified. Equations expressing the combustion characteristic parameters, as a function of the geometric and operation parameters of a spark ignited engines, are delivered as a result.

Abstract: O presente estudo teve como objetivos avaliar a: 1) exatid o das raz es entre volumes compatíveis com sua respectiva fun o de afilamento; 2) os modelos polinomiais de potência inteira e dos modelos polinomiais de potências fracionárias e inteiras; 3) estudar a influência das classes de diametro, da produtividade dos sítios e das diferentes regi es na exatid o dos ajustes para representa o do perfil do fuste de Pinus taeda na regi o nordeste do Paraná. Foram cubadas 304 árvores, utilizando-se do pentaprisma de Wheeler sobre tripé de base regulável com suunto acoplado. Nas proximidades de cada árvore cubada foi lan ada uma parcela e medida a altura das árvores dominantes. P de-se efetuar assim a classifica o de sítio no local de cada cubagem. Os diametros das árvores cubadas rigorosamente foram agrupados em classes, em intervalos de 5 cm. Para avalia o da exatid o das estimativas do perfil do fuste, foram utilizadas as seguintes estatísticas: coeficiente de determina o; erro padr o residual; desvio dos diametros em cada i-ésima posi o no fuste; desvio padr o das diferen as dos diametros; soma do quadrado do resíduo relativo e porcentagem dos resíduos dos diametros. Verificou-se que o ajuste das equa es de afilamento devem ser preferidos por sítio e classe de diametro, além da utiliza o do modelo polinomial de potências fracionárias e inteiras para as estimativas do perfil do fuste.

Abstract: the experiment was conducted at the technical center for irrigation, maringá state university. the objective was to evaluate the effects of different water regimes (irrigation and no irrigation) and fertilization-irrigation, combined with different manure doses for n (15; 30; 45 and 60 g m-1), p (3; 6; 9 and 12 g m-1) and k (15; 30; 45 and 60 g m-1), during the initial growth phase of two coffee cultivars, in the north-western region of the state of paraná. the following culture growth variables were evaluated: top diameter, height of plant and number of total plagiotropic branches. fertilization-irrigation and irrigation affected the initial development of coffee, increasing the values of all evaluated variables. interaction between water regimes and fertilization-irrigation with npk doses was significant for certain growth variables, however results didn't present a common trend, that would indicate which dose was adequate for each water regime during the initial growth phase of the coffee shrub.

COMPARISON OF SEGMENTED AND NON-SEGMENTED POLYNOMIAL TAPER MODELS FOR ESTIMATING DIAMETERS AND VOLUMES ALONG THE STEM OF Pinus taeda

Abstract: The accuracy of diameters and volumes estimates, along the stem of Pinus taeda provided by segmented and non-segmented polynomial taper models, were compared and the effect of trees diameter classes on the quality of the fittings was analysed. 58 trees of Pinus taeda cubed in the farms of PISA - Papel de Imprensa S/A, located in Jaguariaíva county (PR) were separated in 8 diameter classes, and two segmented and two non-segmented polynomial models were fitted for each diameter class and for the total group of data. The segmented models tested were: Clark et al. (1991); and Max & Burkhart (1976). The non-segmented models were: Hradetzky (1976); and Goulding and Murray (1976). Diameters and volumes provided by the four models, fitted with and without the diameter classes control, were analysed by a two-way ANOVA in a randomized block experimental design. Models presented different behaviour for estimating diameters and volumes along the stem of Pinus taeda, and accurate estimates of diameter and volume along the stem profile require diameter classes control. The model proposed by Clark et al. (1991) presented more flexibility than the others, because it can be fitted with or without diameter classes control, except for the diameter class with 32.5 cm and for trees with diameter larger than 45cm. Hradetzky (1976) model, fitted by diameter classes is a simple but accurate model for estimating stem diameter and volume.

Abstract: a nasal septal abscess (na) is defined as a collection of pus between the cartilage or bony septum and its normally applied mucoperichondrium or mucoperiostium. it is an uncommon disease wich should be suspected in a patient with acute onset of nasal obstruction and recent history of nasal trauma, periodontal infection or an inflammatory process of the rhinosinusal region. we report a case of an 8-year-old boy with bilateral na caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus(mr-co) in order to emphasize the importance of prompt diagnosis and adequate treatment to prevent the potentially dangerous spread of infection and the development of severe functional and cosmetic sequelae.

Abstract: Uno de los mayores retos que enfrenta un médico en una Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos es la falla multiorgánica. Síndrome con una oscura etiopatogenia multifactorial, cuadro clínico variado, medios diagnósticos tempranos escasos, con una mortalidad muy alta y hasta ahora, sin un tratamiento específico. En este artículo se revisan estos elementos con el objetivo de actualizar los conocimientos de nuestros cardiólogos, que con tanta frecuencia trabajan en Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos, en relación a este letal e interesante síndrome. One of the greatest challenges faced by physicians in an ICU is multiple organ failure, syndrome that shows unclear multifactor etiopathogenesis, varied clinical picture, few early diagnosis devices, high mortality rate and non-specific treatment so far. This paper reviews these aspects so as to update the Knowledge of our cardiologists who very often face this interesting but deadly syndrome in ICUs.

Abstract: Se hizo una revisión actualizada de la disfunción neurológica que se puede producir en el posoperatorio de la cirugía cardiovascular. Se realizó una rese a de la clasificación, frecuencia de aparición, mecanismos fisiopatológicos y factores de riesgo, mortalidad, algunos medios diagnósticos y tratamiento. An update review of the neurological dysfunction that may be produced in the cardiovascular surgery postoperative was made. A description of the classification, frequence of appearance, physiolopathological mechanisms and risk factors, mortality, some diagnostic aids and treatment was aldo made.
Continuidade espacial para características dendrométricas (numero de fustes e volume) em plantios de eucalyptus grandis

Abstract: this study aimed to verify the spatial continuity of trunk number and wood volume in different plot shapes and sample intensities of eucalyptus grandis plantations with age varying from three to four years. the study area includes four stands, totalizing 104.71 hectares owned by ripasa s/a cellulose and paper company. the data for accomplishing the spatial variability study were collected in circular and line plots distributed systematically in the area at 1:4, 1:7 and 1:10 intensities. it was possible to verify that both for trunk number and volume, the data have presented, approximately, normal distribution. based on variogram analysis, trunk number and wood volume variables were found to be spatially structured. the exponential semi-variogram model was the best model fitted to the experimental semi-variograms of the variables in different plot shapes and sample intensities. the spatial continuity of the trunk number variable was detected at all sample intensities and plot shapes. therefore, the use of spatial statistics to process this variable will increase the precision of the estimates. considering the volume, at sample intensity 1:10, we could not evaluate the existence of a spatial continuity structure. under this condition, classic statistics should be used to process the forest inventory.
