Assessment of Spatial and Temporal Variations of Water Quality for Future Mariculture Operation in Ambong Bay, Sabah, Malaysia  [PDF]

Abstract:
Study was conducted with the aim to understand the temporal and spatial variations of water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, DO, TSS, NO3-, NO2-, NH3-N and PO4-P, and phytoplankton cell density) in Ambong Bay, Sabah, Malaysia in order to provide reference for future mariculture development in the bay. Samplings were carried out once a month in two stations (coastal and open sea) within the bay for 12 months period from September 2015 to August 2016. Results showed that there were significant differences in pH and NO2- when compared spatially, whereas salinity, DO, TSS, phytoplankton cell density, NO3-, NH3-N, and PO4-P were temporally significant. The fermentation processes by anaerobic bacteria, organic acids from decaying vegetation and acidic clays in the mangrove soils might explain the significant spatial differences in pH and NO2-. The bay was dominated by dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum spp. (mean abundance of 16.23% and 24.44%, respectively) a potentially toxic algae species. Correlation matrix showed that NH3-N was positively correlated with PO4-P (r = 0.475, p < 0.05) but negatively correlated with salinity (r = –0.517, p < 0.01). Besides, salinity was positively correlated with DO (r = 0.505, p < 0.05) and TSS (r = 0.408, p < 0.05). In addition, DO and TSS were also positively correlated (r = 0.451, p < 0.05). Phytoplankton cell density was positively correlated with TSS (r = 0.644, p < 0.01). In general, the water quality in Ambong Bay is within the standard values permitted by the Malaysia Marine Water Quality standard for marine life, fisheries, coral reefs, recreational and mariculture (Class 2), except for NO3-. In conclusion, any mariculture operation to take place in Ambong Bay in the near future should take the temporal variation of the water quality into account. Moreover, effects of toxic phytoplankton to culture fishes should also be taken care and monitored frequently.

Abstract: Recent development in developing humanoid robot poses new challenges to human-machine interaction communication. A major challenge is to develop robots that can behave like and interact with human in the most natural way possible. This paper proposes a system to develop a robot that can receive command, and talk to people in natural language. In addition, the robot can also be "trained" to become an expert in sepcific areas to provide expert advice to human-beings. Most important of all, the robot can display emotions through facial expression, speech and gesture so that the interaction process will become more comprehensive and compelling.

Abstract: For each triple of positive numbers p,q,r≥1 and each commutative C*-algebra ℬ with identity 1 and the set s(ℬ) of states on ℬ, the set 𝒮r(ℬ) of all matrices A=[ajk] over ℬ such that ϕ[A[r]]:=[ϕ(|ajk|r)] defines a bounded operator from ℓp to ℓq for all ϕ∈s(ℬ) is shown to be a Banach algebra under the Schur product operation, and the norm ‖A‖=‖|A|‖p,q,r=sup{‖ϕ[A[r]]‖1/r:ϕ∈s(ℬ)}. Schatten's theorems about the dual of the compact operators, the trace-class operators, and the decomposition of the dual of the algebra of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space are extended to the 𝒮r(ℬ) setting.

Abstract: This study is about harvesting point of interest from GPS trajectories. Trajectories are the paths that moving objects move by follow through space in a function of time while GPS trajectories generally are point-sequences with geographic coordinates, time stamp, speed and heading. User can get information from GPS enable device. For example, user can acquire present location, search the information around them and design driving routes to a destination and thus design travel itineraries. By sharing GPS logs among each other, people are able to find some places that attract them from other people's travel route. Analysis on the GPS logs can get the point of interest that is popular. By present the point of interest, user can choose travel place easily and the travel itineraries is plan based on the user preferences.

Abstract: Let 𝒜 be a C*-algebra with identity 1, and let s(𝒜) denote the set of all states on 𝒜. For p,q,r∈[1,∞), denote by 𝒮r(𝒜) the set of all infinite matrices A=[ajk]j,k=1∞ over 𝒜 such that the matrix (ϕ[A[2]])[r]:=[(ϕ(ajk*ajk))r]j,k=1∞ defines a bounded linear operator from ℓp to ℓq for all ϕ∈s(𝒜). Then 𝒮r(𝒜) is a Banach algebra with the Schur product operation and norm ‖A‖=sup{‖(ϕ[A[2]])r‖1/(2r):ϕ∈s(𝒜)}. Analogs of Schatten's theorems on dualities among the compact operators, the trace-class operators, and all the bounded operators on a Hilbert space are proved.

Abstract: As a pre-analysis step, the HRV data is tested for nonlinearity using surrogate data analysis and the results exhibited a significant difference in the ApEn, LLE, SD1/SD2 and DFA parameters of the actual data and the surrogate data.The heart rate is analyzed using the various time domain parameters, frequency domain parameter and nonlinear parameters like Poincare geometry, ApEn, LLE and DFA.In this work, the different linear and nonlinear parameters evaluated show a particular range for various cardiac abnormalities. And the results of these were subjected to 't' test with more than 89% confidence interval giving excellent 'p' values in all cases.Heart rate variability (HRV) signal can be used as a reliable indicator of state of the heart. It becomes less random with the aging(less chaotic). This is evaluated by using various time domain, frequency domain and nonlinear parameters like SD1/SD2, ApEn, LLE αs and αl. Different ranges of non-linear parameters for various age groups are presented with 'p' value ≤ 0.12.The Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive index of the neural control of the heart. HRV can be quantified by the simple calculation of the standard deviation of the R-R intervals. Furthermore, in the frequency domain, spectral analysis of HRV reveals three distinct frequency regions in the modulation of heart rate in humans. The typical spectral pattern, in normal conditions shows the presence of three frequency bands: a very low frequency (VLF) band from 0.00 to 0.03 Hz, a low frequency (LF) band from 0.03 to 0.15 Hz and a high frequency (HF) band in respiratory range generally more than 0.15 Hz. The power of LF component seems to be related to the vagal and sympathetic activities (LF component increases with every form of sympathetic stimulation), whereas the area of high frequency component (HF) provides a quantitative index of the influence of respiration on ECG signal and may be connected to the vagal activity.
