Sero-Prevalence of Caseous Lymphadenitis Evaluated by Agar Gel Precipitation Test among Small Ruminant Flocks in East Coast Economic Regions in Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: Seroepidemiological survey of Caseous Lymphadenitis (CLA), a bacterial infection in sheep and goats was conducted in East Coast Economic Regions (ECER) in peninsular Malaysia. A total of 422 animals (n = 422) from 15 small ruminant farms (sheep and goats) in the four states were screened during the period from January to April 2011. The management practices that could be associated with CLA occurrence was also analyzed. The objective of this survey was to determine the overall status of CLA infections in small ruminants. AGPT was conducted on serum samples collected from animals. About 47 samples out of 422 yielded a positive reaction for AGPT test. The frequency of CLA infections was estimated at 11.1%. Management practices were analyzed through questionnaire. All farmers (15/15) had semi-extensive rearing system; 27.6% (13/47) of farmers had periodical veterinary services; 10.6% (5/47) took note of animals with clinical signs of CLA; 14.8% (7/47) were aware of the zoonotic potential of this disease. Lack of sanitary measures and epidemiological studies led the dissemination of this disease in Malaysia. Moreover, the economic importance of this disease seems to be overlooked by both individual and state level allowing existence of endemic nature of the disease in this country. Therefore, further epidemiological studies using reliable diagnostic tools and application of appropriate management practices need to be implemented for aiding control and eradication programs for this disease.
Polymerase Chain Reaction Detection of C. pseudotuberculosis in the Brain of Mice Following Oral Inoculation

Abstract: The aim of present study was to detect the presence of C. pseudotuberculosis in the brain of the mice following oral inoculation as a model using PCR. Caseous lymphadenitis is a chronic and subclinical disease of sheep and goats which has universal distributions, presenting enormous animal and flock prevalence. Total of 16 mice were used for this study, 8 mice were inoculated orally with 1.0 mL sterile phosphate buffered saline pH 7, while another 8 mice were inoculated with 1.0 mL of 109 colony forming unit of C. pseudotuberculosis. Seven different organs were collected during post mortem for the detection ofC. pseudotuberculosis The result indicated 3 positive samples in lymph nodes, 5 in the brain and 1 in the liver. The PCR used in the present study may successfully be applied for the detection and diagnosis of C. pseudotuberculosis in the brain of the mice following oral inoculation.
Haematological and Biochemical Alterations in Mice Following Experimental Infection with Whole Cell and Exotoxin (PLD) Extracted from C. Pseudotuberculosis

Abstract: Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the etiological agent of caseous lymphadenitis, a chronic infectious disease of sheep and goats. Despite the growing interest of this organism, little is known about the causality and effect of this organism on haematological and biochemical values. The purpose of this research, therefore was to determine haematological and serum biochemical features in mice inoculated with whole bacterium and exotoxin (PLD) extracted from C. pseudotuberculosis. The study was performed on apparently healthy mice of 2-3 weeks old (n = 64). The mice were divided equally into 3 groups; namely whole bacterium, exotoxin (PLD) and control group. Mice of whole bacterium group were exposed intraperitoneally to 1 mL of the inoculums containing 109 Colony-Forming Unit (CFU)/mL of live C. pseudotuberculosis. Exotoxin group were exposed intraperitoneally with a single dose of exotoxin (PLD) extracted from C. pseudotuberculosis. Mice served as a control group were challenged intraperitoneally to 1 mL of Phosphate-Buffered Saline (PBS), pH 7. Following post-infection, the mice were subjected for blood sample collection using cardiac puncture method for haematological and biochemical analysis. The results of this study revealed that there were significant decrease (p<0.05) in Hb, thrombocytes count and significant increase in WBC, neutrophils, monocytes counts in the infected group. Biochemically, there were highly significant increase (p<0.05) in the mean levels of CK, AST, ALP and ALT. The mean level of albumin in exotoxin group was significantly lower (p<0.05) compared to C. pseudotuberculosis and control groups while globulin level was significantly higher in C. pseuodotuberculosis group after 48 h. In serum electrolytes, mean level of potassium and phosphate were significantly (p<0.05) higher in infected groups compared to control group while there was no significant (p<0.05) difference in the levels of sodium, calcium and chloride. In conclusions, the present study of experimental nature showed that C. pseudotuberculosis and its exotoxin (PLD) cause disturbances in blood factors and electrolytes and pointed out that t hese haematological and biochemical alterations should be taken into account in the context of diagnosis and treatment of valuable infected hosts in order to prevent further consequences.

Abstract: The results of fluid flow simulation around an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) are presented in this paper. The UUV represents a small submarine for underwater search and rescue operation, which suits the local river conditions. The flow simulation was performed with a commercially available computational fluid dynamics package, Star-CD. The effects of the UUV geometry on the velocity and pressure distributions on the UUV surface were discussed for Re=500,000 and 3,000,000. The discussion led to an improved design of the UUV with a smoother velocity profile around the UUV body.
Genotoxic Potential of Shrimp Pastes (Belacan) Extracts Using Umu Test  [PDF]

Abstract: This study was conducted to observe the genotoxic effects of aqueous, methanol, hexane and dichloromethane extracts of “belacan” (shrimp paste) taken from three local districts in Melaka, Malaysia (Kelemak, Batang Tiga & Pantai Puteri). The umu test which was used as the screening test was conducted with and without the presence of metabolic activation system. Without the presence of metabolic activation system, aqueous extracts from Kelemak showed mutagenicity activity at 5 mg/ml with IR (Induction Rate) = 1.52 ± 0.57 and the methanol extracts showed mutagenic activities at 0.625 mg/ml and 5 mg/ml, which the IR was the highest at 5 mg/ml (2.08 ± 0.09). On the other hand, samples from Batang Tiga, Melaka showed mutagenic effects at all five concentrations for the dichloromethane extract, with IR = 2.09 ± 0.64 as the highest value at 1.25 mg/ml. Methanol extracts also showed positive results at 1.25 mg/ml and 2.5 mg/ml with IR = 1.70 ± 0.33 and IR = 2.12 ± 0.51 respectively, and aqueous extract at 0.625 mg/ml with IR = 1.54 ± 0.48 and 5 mg/ml with IR = 1.74 ± 0.50. There was a significant difference of the mean values of IR between the four different types of “belacan” extracts from Batang Tiga (p < 0.05). All four “belacan” extracts from Pantai Puteri, Melaka did not show any mutagenic effect. With the presence of metabolic activation system, there was no mutagenic effect observed in all four extracts from the three districts. Further study to analyze the contents in the food samples should be done in the future to determine the possible contents in the food samples that might be responsible for the mutagenic activities.

Abstract: In this paper, we have made an investigation on a stellar model with Kramer’s Opacity and negligible abundance of heavy elements. We have determined the structure of a star with mass , i.e. the physical variables like pressure, density, temperature and luminosity at different interior points of the star. We have discussed about some equations of structure, mechanism of energy production in a star and energy transports in stellar interior in a star and then we have solved radiative envelope and convective core by the matching or fitting point method and Runge-Kutta method by C Programming language. In future, it will help us to know about the characteristics of new stars.

Abstract:

Network traffic prediction plays a fundamental role in characterizing the network performance and it is of significant interests in many network applications, such as admission control or network management. Therefore, The main idea behind this work, is the development of a WIMAX Traffic Forecasting System for predicting traffic time series based on the daily and monthly traffic data recorded (TRD) with association of feed forward multi-layer perceptron (FFMLP). The quality of forecasting WIMAX Traffic obtained by comparing different configurations of the FFMLP that consist of investigating different FFMLP model architectures and different Learning Algorithms. The decision of changing the FFMLP architecture is essentially based on prediction results to obtain the FFMLP model for flow traffic prediction model. The different configurations were tested using daily and monthly real traffic data recorded at each of the two base stations (A and B) that belongs to a Libyan WiMAX Network. We evaluate our approach with statistical measurement and a good statistic measure of FMLP indicates the performance of selected neural network configuration. The developed system indicates promising results in which it successfully network traffic prediction through daily and monthly traffic data recorded (TRD) association with artificial neural network.

Analisis Parameter Proses Pengecoran Squeeze Terhadap Cacat Porositas Produk Flens Motor Sungai

Abstract: The existing flanges component which is produced by traditional sand casting shows low quality both of the material and dimension, since the product made from recycled material and supported by a very simple technology. The quality of casting is not depends on the microstructure, but also supported by a good appearance. This research is to analyze the effect of process parameters by producing specimens through squeeze casting process using the existing recycled material. Process parameter such as squeeze pressure and punch & die temperature. The process consists of melting the alloys and heating the die in two difference resistance furnaces, ladling the melt into pre-heated die cavity and finally applying pressure by hydraulic power until the melt is fully solidified. After investigating the specimen, the results show that the quantity of the porosity as compared to traditional sand casting is decreasing significantly. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Produk flens yang ada, dihasilkan dari pengecoran cetakan pasir dengan bahan baku daur-ulang dan didukung oleh teknologi sederhana, bermutu rendah baik dari segi bahan maupun dimensi. Mutu hasil cor yang baik tidak hanya ditentukan dengan strukturmikro yang baik dan homogen tetapi juga dengan kekuatan dan penampakan yang baik. Penelitian ini mencoba menganalisis pengaruh parameter proses pengecoran squeeze paduan aluminium daur ulang yang ada dengan cara memvariasikan parameter tekanan squeeze, dan temperatur punch & die. Langkah proses squeeze casting meliputi pemanasan logam dan die dalam dua dapur induksi berbeda, dilanjutkan dengan penuangan logam cairan ke dalam die dan diteruskan dengan pemberian tekanan selama waktu tertentu. Setelah melakukan beberapa pengujian terhadap spesimen, hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa persentase porositas yang dihasilkan menurun secara signifikan dibandingkan dengan proses pengecoran cetakan pasir yang ada. Kata kunci: pengecoran squeeze, porositas, paduan aluminium daur ulang.
