Abstract This article characterizes the decades of the industrial development of the United States, explaining how it happened so early in the XIX century and has reflected, also, on the relationships in the east hemisphere. It is analyzed the stage called “token ring” between the two hegemonic nation, England and the United States of America in the economic field and world’s policy and also in the poliedric relationships with Latin America. Finally, it is defined the characteristics of the Big Depression Period and the following decade, what works as a historical symbol of the sequence phase of high north American hegemony.
Fabrizio Lorusso
Confluenze. Rivista di Studi Iberoamericani , 2010,
Abstract: This article considers the main reviews and criticisms that have been posed, mainly during the last two decades, to the attention of the experts in the field of teaching systems in the graduate schools of business administration. The main statement is that we can outline the features that will be relevant for a substantial part of the future ruling and business class in Latin America and its own historical, social and economic context. This is possible by taking into account and making a synthesis of the outstanding criticisms and debates posed by different schools of thought, paying special attention to the essential relation of the academic world with the business sector - that is to say with the “practice” of business administration that has been constantly stemming away from the corresponding theory and academic background. Keywords: Business administration, MBA system, teaching, theory, Latin America.
A seasonal periodicity in relapses of multiple sclerosis? A single-center, population-based, preliminary study conducted in Bologna, Italy

BMC Neurology , 2010, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2377-10-105
Abstract: We considered 96 consecutive patients with severe MS relapse (29 men, 67 women, mean age 38.5 ± 8.8 years), referred to the Multiple Sclerosis Center, Bellaria Hospital, Bologna, Italy, between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008. Overall, we analyzed 164 relapses (56 in men, 108 in women; 115 in patients aged < 40 years, 49 in patients ≥40 years). Relapses were more frequent in May and June (12.2% each) and the least frequent in September (3.7%). Chronobiological analysis showed a biphasic pattern (major peak in May-June, secondary peak in November-December, p = 0.030). Analysis of monthly mean meteorological data showed a significant seasonal pattern in ambient temperature (peak in July, p < 0.001), relative humidity (peak in January, p < 0.001), and wind speed (peak in June, p = 0.011).In this Italian setting, we found a biphasic pattern (peaks in spring and autumn) in severe MS relapses requiring medical consultation by doctors of the MS specialty center, apparently unrelated to meteorological variables. Confirmations of the findings on larger multi-center populations residing in different climatic conditions are needed to further explore the potential seasonality of MS relapses and associated environmental triggers.Several medical conditions, in particular acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular ones, exhibit prominent temporal patterns, i.e., 24-hour, weekly, and seasonal patterns in exacerbation and mortality. For example, a seasonal pattern, characterized by an autumn-winter excess of onset, has been recently confirmed in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy for acute myocardial infarction [1], aortic diseases [2], and transient ischemich attack [3]. Little is known, however, about the seasonality of many other types of diseases, especially neurological ones, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and its relapses, particularly in Italy. Thus, we investigated, by means of a validated chronobiological statistical method, whether severe relapses of MS display seas
Bevacizumab in the treatment of HER2-negative breast cancer
Vito Lorusso
Biologics: Targets and Therapy , 2008,
Abstract: Vito LorussoOncologic Institute, Vito Fazzi Hospital, Lecce, ItalyAbstract: Angiogenesis has a clear and definite role in the breast cancer progression process, making antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies an attractive option for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Bevacizumab is a potent humanized monoclonal antibody to VEGF, which has shown regression of breast cancer in preclinical and clinical setting, either alone or in combination with cytotoxic treatment. Additionally, bevacizumab potentially increases the effectiveness of other anticancer therapies through the normalization of tumor vasculature, reduction of intratumoral pressure and improved tumor oxygenation. Phase 1/2 trials showed significant antitumor effects of bevacizumab in MBC, in particular in tumors not expressing HER2 receptor. A first phase 3 trial in pre-treated MBC patients showed better response rates but no survival benefit from the addition of bevacizumab to capecitabine. However, in two phase 2 trial in first-line setting in patients with MBC, bevacizumab improved progression-free survival in combination with weekly paclitaxel in comparison to paclitaxel alone or in combination with 3-weekly docetaxel in comparison with docetaxel alone, respectively. Bevacizumab in combination with taxanes seems to be a highly effective first-line treatment for MBC patients. Future research will investigate bevacizumab in the neoadjuvant or adjuvant setting, where even more potential may exist for these patients. Keywords: bevacizumab, breast cancer, HER2, HER2-negative breast cancer

Abstract:
Authenticity and conservation state of art works: the market and auction houses & Presentation of the historical-technical Journal “Conservation Science in Cultural Heritage"

Conservation Science in Cultural Heritage : Historical Technical Journal , 2008,
Abstract: The title Authenticity and conservation state of art works: The market and auction houses mirrors the particular status of confusion and instability in which the auction houses – find themselves – nowadays. It is an international situation of existential and economic crisis in which humanity appears to be excited and schizophrenic. This lecture is part of a series all dedicated to various aspects of art, with a particular focus on the great Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. A good selection of his works is currently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Giorgio Morandi conceived art as a “practice of silence”, where his “still life” functioned as a filter to observe the world outside his small cloistered art studio. By emphasizing the importance of weight and gravity with grace and attention, this artist can therefore teach us how important it is to judge a piece of art not only subjectively – giving greatest relevance to the satisfaction of individual aesthetical standards – but also objectively – where the techniques and the materials utilized assume the greatest significance. This allows the estimator to estimate correctly their economic and financial value. The second part of the lecture consists in the presentation of the historical-technical journal Conservation Science in Cultural Heritage. It represents an emblematic gathering of experts, symbolizing therefore a necessary encounter among people with different cultural backgrounds, experiences and skills. They meet to address and discuss issues related to their common field of study, the Cultural Heritage sector. This jolts, as it can be imagined, American art critics. They often lack social criticism showing them to be too focused on aesthetics and elegance of form. The consequent question arises: is this really true?
