A global root-finding method for high dimensional problems

Abstract: A method to solve the problem f(x) = 0 efficiently on any n-dimensional domain Omega under very broad hypoteses is proposed. The position of the root of f, assumed unique, is found by computing the center of mass of an Omega-shaped object having a singular mass density. It is shown that although the mass of the object is infinite, the position of its center of mass can be computed exactly and corresponds to the solution of the problem. The exact analytical result is implemented numerically by means of an adaptive Monte Carlo sampling technique which provides an exponential rate of convergence. The method can be extended to functions with multiple roots, providing an efficient automated root finding algorithm.
Ultra strong coupling regime and plasmon-polaritons in parabolic semiconductor quantum wells

Abstract: Ultra strong coupling is studied in a modulation-doped parabolic potential well coupled to an inductance-capacitance resonant circuit. In this system, in accordance to Kohn's theorem, strong reduction of the energy level separation caused by the electron-electron interaction compensates the depolarization shift. As a result, a very large ratio of 27% of the Rabi frequency to the center resonance frequency as well as a polariton gap of width 2? ? 670GHz are observed, suggesting parabolic quantum wells as the system of choice in order to explore the ultra-strong coupling regime.
The large-scale structure in the Chandra Deep Field South

Abstract: We have studied the large scale distribution of matter in the Chandra Deep Field South on the basis of photometric redshifts and we have identifed several over-densities between redshift 0.6 and 2.3. We analyse two of these structures using the deepest X-ray observations ever obtained: 4 Ms with the Chandra satellite and 2.5 Ms with XMM-Newton. We set a very faint upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of a structure at redshift 1.6, and we find an extended X-ray emission from a structure at redshift 0.96 of which we can estimate the gas temperature and make a comparison with the scaling relations between the X-ray luminosity and mass or temperature of high redshift galaxy clusters.

Abstract: The strong-coupling regime between an electronic transition and the photonic mode of a optical resonator manifests itself in the lifting of the degeneracy between the two modes and the creation of two polariton states with mixed optical and electronic character. This phenomenon has been studied in atoms, excitons in semiconductors and quantum electrodynamics circuits based on Josephson junctions. Recently, there is also strong interest to study similar e?ects using intersubband transitions in quantum wells in the terahertz, where the ultra strong coupling regime can be reached and new physical e?ects have been predicted. An other interesting feature of this system is that, in contrast to systems based on superconductors, the ultra strong coupling regime can be maintained up to room temperature. In this work, we demonstrate that parabolic quantum wells coupled to LC circuit resonators in the ultra strong coupling regime can achieve terahertz emission up to room temperature.
Accurate Tools for Analyzing the Behavior of Impulse Noise Reduction Filters in Color Images  [PDF]

Abstract:

Effective cancellation of noise and preservation of color/structural information are features of paramount importance for any filter devoted to impulse noise removal in color images. In this paper novel full-reference tools for analyzing the behavior of this family of filters are presented. The proposed approach is based on the classification of color errors into two main classes that separately take into account the inaccuracy in removing noise pulses and the filtering distortion. The distortion errors are then classified into two subclasses for a deeper analysis of the filtering behavior. Computer simulations show that the proposed method gives more accurate results than using other measures of filtering performance in the literature. Furthermore, the method can easily yield the spatial location of the different filtering features in the image.

Abstract:

Special Relativity sets tight constraints on the form of the possible relations between the four-momentum of a particle and the wave four-vector. In fact, we demonstrate that there is just one way, according to Special Relativity, to relate the energy and the momentum of a corpuscle with the characteristics of a plane wave, frequency and wave vector, if the momentum has to flow in the same direction of the wave propagation: the laws must be of direct proportionality like de Broglie \"\" and Planck-Einstein \"\" equations.

Abstract: the article presents the first part of a study on origens' interpretation of chapter 6 of the gospel by saint john. the study attempts to gather and examine the various texts related to the exegesis about jn 6, comprised in the works by origen which we have come to us. then, there is an attempt to outline the foundations of origen's interpretation to jn 6. given that the material is abundant, this first part presents and examines only the texts related to the narrative part (jn 6, 1-21) and starts introducing the texts related to jesus' words (jn 6, 35-59). in fact, it clear that origen's interest focuses particularly on jesus' speech in which he calls himself "bread of life". this paper presents the texts comprised in de oratione, comment on john, and comment on mathew. the second part of this study presents the remaining texts related to the "bread of life" speech, which are contained in the homilies on the genesis, homilies on exodus; homilies on leviticus, homilies on numbers and homilies on joshua. the author also makes a balance of the presence of this issue in the other works by origen which have to come to our days, to end up emphasising the train of thought of origen's exegesis about jn 6

Abstract: El artículo contiene la primera parte de un estudio sobre la interpretación de Orígenes al capítulo 6 del Evangelio de Juan. Este estudio se propone primero reunir y examinar los distintos textos, relacionados a la exégesis de Jn 6, contenidos en las obras de Orígenes que nos han llegado. En un segundo momento se buscará trazar las líneas de fondo de la interpretación origeniana a Jn 6. Siendo el material abundante, en esta primera parte se presentan y examinan los textos relacionados a la parte narrativa (Jn 6,1-21), y se inician a presentar los textos relacionados al discurso de Jesús (Jn 6,35-59). En efecto, está claro que el interés de Orígenes se ha dirigido particularmente al discurso en el que Jesús se declara "pan de la vida". Aquí se verán los textos contenidos en el De Oratione, en el Comentario a Juan, y en el Comentario a Mateo. En la segunda parte del estudio se terminará de presentar los textos relacionados al tema del "pan de la vida" y que están contenidos en las Homilías al Génesis, Homilías al éxodo, Homilías al Levítico, Homilías a los Números y Homilías a Josué. Haré también una revisión y balance de la presencia de esta temática en el resto de las obras origenianas que nos han llegado. Analysis of the possession ball in soccer: frequency, duration and transition Análisis de las posesiones de balón en fútbol: frecuencia, duración y transición

Abstract: El análisis de la complejidad del rendimiento en fútbol es a día de hoy una asignatura todavía pendiente. La fluctuación de los comportamientos que se dan durante el juego es una realidad difícil de explicar y predecir. Entre las variables posibles, parece ser que la posesión del balón puede ser uno de los indicadores de rendimiento que puede llevar a un equipo a imponerse en el juego ofensivo, aunque no siempre en el marcador. El objetivo del presente estudio es describir la alternancia entre las posesiones de balón de uno y otro equipo, que permita inferir sobre los desequilibrios que estos cambios pueden generar en la organización del equipo. Para ello se ha tomado una muestra de 11 partidos de la Eurocopa’08, estimada a partir de la Teoría de la Generalizabilidad (TG). Se han codificado las posesiones del balón de uno y otro equipo que se sucedía dentro de cada BJ, completándolo con las interrupciones reglamentarias marcadas por el árbitro. Los resultados muestran un incremento significativo en el número de balones en juego de una única posesión, al tiempo que los que incluían la secuenciación de dos o más posesiones se han visto disminuidas. The fluctuation of the behaviors that occur during the game is a difficult reality to explain and to predict. Between the possible variables, it seems to be that, the ball possession can be one of the performance indicators that can take a team to impose in the offensive game, although it is not always at score. The objective of the present study is to describe the ball possessions of both teams, to know the changes that they can generate in the organization of the team. Eleven matches of the last Euro’08 were observed, registered and analyzed, considered from the Generalizability Theory (GT). The ball possessions of both teams have been codified in each ball in game, completing it with the set pieces marked by the referee. The results show a significant grow in the number of balls in game of only one possession, in consequence that include that two or more ball possessions have been diminished. LOADS INTERACTION DOMAINS METHODOLOGY FOR THE DESIGN OF STEEL GREENHOUSE STRUCTURES

Abstract: Aim of this research is to develop a design methodology which correlates main structural design parameters, whose production is characterised by high levels of standardization, such as the height of gutter or the distance between frames, with actions on the greenhouse. The methodology, based on the use of charts and abacus, permits a clear and a direct interpretation of the structural response to design load combinations and allows the design of structural improvements with the aim of the optimization of the ratio benefits (structural strength)/costs. The study of structural interaction domains allowed a clear and a direct interpretation of the structural response to design load combinations. The diagrams highlight not only if the structure fulfils the standard requirements but also the safety levels with respect to design load combinations and allow the structural designer how to operate in order to optimize the structural response with standard requirements achieving the best ratio benefits (structural safety)/ costs. The methodology was developed basing on criteria assigned by EN13031 on two different kinds of greenhouse structures: an arched greenhouse with a film plastic covering and a duo pitched roof greenhouse cover with rigid plastic membranes. Structural interaction domains for arched greenhouse showed a better capability of the structure to resist to vertical loads then to horizontal one. Moreover, the climatic load distribution on the structure assigned by EN13031 is such that the combination of climatic actions is less dangerous for the structure then their individual application. Whilst, duo pitched roof steel greenhouse interaction domains, showed a better capability of the structure to resist to vertical loads then to horizontal one and that, in any case, the serviceability limit states analysis is more strict then the ULS one. The shape of structural domains highlighted that the combination of actions is more dangerous for the structure then the application of single loads. Charts and abacus very easy to interpret and can be used also by non technicians in order to arrange a quick and reliable estimate of the costs of the structure. For instance, it is sufficient to know characteristic values of snow loads and wind speed to evaluate what is the distance of frame of the arched greenhouse to fulfil EN13031 requirements.
