Social Networking (SN) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/sn.2014.32017
Abstract:

In 2008, the Brazilian Department of Science and Technology created the INCTs (Brazilian Science and Technology Institutes). One of them was the Cancer Control INCT. Due to its importance and considering that there are different groups working together in the same area, it is important that they collaborate intensely. Envisioning an empowerment of scientific collaboration, the BRINCA project was created to support a set of analyses of the social networks from this particular INCT. These analyses were created by mining curricular and publications bases, and identifying different types of scientific relationships and areas. We were able to observe, for instance, how the interaction is amongst researchers from related areas, which researchers were more collaborative and which ones were isolated from the network. These analyzes were used by the INCT coordination to understand and act to improve scientific collaboration.

Abstract: In a preceding work we have reported experiments showing that an hydroalcoholic exctract of Agaricus blazei is able to exert purinergic effects in the isolated perfused rat liver when it is infused into the portal vein in monovascular perfusion (entry: portal vein; exit: hepatic vein). In the present communication we are presenting and discussing experiments done with the bivascularly perfused rat liver (entry: portal vein + hepatic artery; exit: hepatic vein) in order to verify if the hemodynamic effects also occur in the arterial bed. It was found that the A. blazei extract is also active when infused into the hepatic arterial bed, with differences in both sensitivity and nature of the effects on either perfusion pressure or oxygen consumption. Constriction of the arterial bed required much higher concentrations of the extract than the portal bed. The kinetics of the response was also different, with a biphasic instead of a monophasic response. These results provide a promising starting point for future studies aiming to bring to light more mechanistic details about these and possibly other effects.

Bragantia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87052008000400002
Abstract: a real understanding of how the environmental factors affect gas exchange is extremely important for the optimization of co2 photosynthetic assimilation and water loss control. in order to contribute to this, in two seasons, october 2002 and january 2003, the gas exchange and the potential photochemical efficiency in 'formosa' papaya plants cultivated under field condition in s?o francisco do itabapoana, rio de janeiro state, were studied. the co2 photosynthetic assimilation (a), stomatal conductance (gs), photosynthetic photon flux density (ppfd) were evaluated daily, four days per month, each every hour, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in addition, the potential photochemical efficiency was measured from the same leaves and at the same conditions as before. the co2 photosynthetic assimilation was higher in january. this result was due to a greater stomatal aperture on leaves of plants cultivated during this season. the lower a value observed in october, caused by the reduction of gs, was due to a higher photosynthetic photon flux density (cloudless days) occurred in this month. under the experimental conditions, measuring the potential photochemical efficiency, the photoinhibitory chronic type effect was not verified. possibly the non-detection of damage to the photosynthetic apparatus has been due to the paraheliotropic movement of leaves, observed at warmer periods of the day. these results can contribute significantly for the papaya tree management grown under field condition, since any management strategy that optimizes the stomatal aperture will help the co2 photosynthetic assimilation, and may result in an increase of productivity.

As a result of the evolution that Accounting has had in recent years, some bibliometric studies have been carried out, similarly to what happens in other areas of knowledge. Thus, the present work aims to examine bibliometrically the profile of authors in Accounting from papers published in the USP Congress on Comptrollership and Accounting and in the ANPCONT Accounting Congress in the years 2009 and 2010. Hence, the research showed that the greatest concentration is 2 authors per paper, equivalent to 35% of the sample. In addition, most authors are male (68%). Results also showed that many authors, 407, have published only one paper, whereas others published more, the most prolific presenting 11 works. In this context, the University of Sao Paulo (USP) was the institution that provided most authors related, 83, followed by Fucape, with 64, and the Regional University of Blumenau (FURB), with 31 papers.
Inference of gene regulatory networks from time series by Tsallis entropy

BMC Systems Biology , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1752-0509-5-61
Abstract: In this paper we introduce the use of generalized entropy proposed by Tsallis, for the inference of GRNs from time series expression profiles. The inference process is based on a feature selection approach and the conditional entropy is applied as criterion function. In order to assess the proposed methodology, the algorithm is applied to recover the network topology from temporal expressions generated by an artificial gene network (AGN) model as well as from the DREAM challenge. The adopted AGN is based on theoretical models of complex networks and its gene transference function is obtained from random drawing on the set of possible Boolean functions, thus creating its dynamics. On the other hand, DREAM time series data presents variation of network size and its topologies are based on real networks. The dynamics are generated by continuous differential equations with noise and perturbation. By adopting both data sources, it is possible to estimate the average quality of the inference with respect to different network topologies, transfer functions and network sizes.A remarkable improvement of accuracy was observed in the experimental results by reducing the number of false connections in the inferred topology by the non-Shannon entropy. The obtained best free parameter of the Tsallis entropy was on average in the range 2.5 ≤ q ≤ 3.5 (hence, subextensive entropy), which opens new perspectives for GRNs inference methods based on information theory and for investigation of the nonextensivity of such networks. The inference algorithm and criterion function proposed here were implemented and included in the DimReduction software, which is freely available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/dimreduction webcite and http://code.google.com/p/dimreduction/ webcite. In general, living organisms can be viewed as net-works of molecules connected by chemical reactions. More specifically, the cell control involves the activity of several related genes through gene networks, with

Abstract: in some papaya producing regions in brazil, it was observed a physiological disturb in the fruits called skin freckles (sf). such disturb may cause significant damages to crops, since it may affect the quality of the fruits. this work aimed to search possible relationship among the sf incidence, the soil water potential, the soluble solid content in the latex, the thermal amplitude and the air vapor pressure deficit. these studies were carried out in a commercial orchard located in the town of s?o francisco de itabapoana - rj, where some characteristics were monitored including the air vapor pressure deficit, the soil water potential, the soluble solid content in the latex in two faces of the fruit (the face close to the trunk and the opposing face to the trunk) and the air thermal amplitude. one verified that in the months that preceeded the period of higher incidence of the sf, the soil water deficit increased (daily average of -113,6kpa from april to july), in association with smaller air evaporative demands (daily average of 0,6kpa from april to july) and a thermal amplitude average of 11,3oc in these same periods contributed for the higher incidence of the sf in the months between july and october.
A well-log regression analysis for P-wave velocity prediction in the namorado oil field, Campos basin

Revista Brasileira de Geofísica , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-261X2009000400005
Abstract: geophysical well log measurements are key information for the development of oil and gas reservoirs. however, the absence of a certain fundamental well log, for instance, the compressional-wave (p-wave) sonic log, prevents the application of specific risk-assessment techniques. therefore, the application of methodologies for estimating log records absent in wells is of great importance in the reservoir characterization and development procedures. in this paper, we use the regression analysis methodology for estimating p-wave sonic log measurements. effective porosity, shaliness and electrical resistivity are established, individually or in a combined way, as the parameters for describing p-wave velocity variation in namorado oil field, campos basin. two general equations provide 28 empirical models with potential use in estimating p-wave velocity variation from well log measurements. application of least-squares technique leads to the determination of lithology-related regression coefficients at the surroundings of two wells chosen for verifying the empirical models. the results show the equivalence of both general equations used for obtaining empirical models for p-wave velocity estimation. as confirmation of papers published previously, empirical models assuming effective porosity and/or shaliness as dependence parameters play a fundamental role in the prediction of velocity variation. nevertheless, the velocity calibration process exhibits high stability for empirical models in which electrical resistivity is used as an additional dependence parameter.
