Is Cold Dark Matter Still a Strong Buy? The Lesson from Galaxy Clusters

Abstract: For the last few years the Cold Dark Matter model (ticker: CDM), has been the dominant theory of structure formation. We briefly review the recent advancements and predictions of the model in the field of galaxy clusters. A new set of very high resolution simulations of galaxy clusters show that they have (1) density profiles with central slopes very close to -1.6 and (2) abundance of subhalos similar to the ones observed in real clusters. These results show a remarkably small cluster to cluster variation and a weak dependence from the particular CDM cosmology chosen (LCDM having ~40% less substructure than SCDM). While still a speculative theory with a high prediction/evidence ratio, subject to strong challenges from observational data and competition from other hierarchical theories, we give CDM a rating of ``market outperform'' and of ``long term BUY''.
Ground state and excitation properties of soft-core bosons

Abstract: We study the physics of soft-core bosons at zero temperature in two dimensions for a class of potentials that could be realised in experiments with Rydberg dressed Bose-Einstein condensates. We analyze the ground state properties of the system in detail and provide a complete description of the excitation spectra in both superfluid, supersolid and crystalline phase for a wide range of interaction strengths and densities. In addition we describe a method to extract the transverse gapless excitation modes in the phases with broken translational symmetry within the framework of path integral Monte Carlo methods.
An FPGA-based Torus Communication Network

Abstract: We describe the design and FPGA implementation of a 3D torus network (TNW) to provide nearest-neighbor communications between commodity multi-core processors. The aim of this project is to build up tightly interconnected and scalable parallel systems for scientific computing. The design includes the VHDL code to implement on latest FPGA devices a network processor, which can be accessed by the CPU through a PCIe interface and which controls the external PHYs of the physical links. Moreover, a Linux driver and a library implementing custom communication APIs are provided. The TNW has been successfully integrated in two recent parallel machine projects, QPACE and AuroraScience. We describe some details of the porting of the TNW for the AuroraScience system and report performance results.
Catastrophic Childhood Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Abstract: Focal epilepsy, more frequently of extratemporal type, in children can present with a rapidly progressing course of intractable, severe epilepsy, associated to cognitive regression or stagnation. We present a typical example of such a patient with focal seizures due to a temporal lobe cortical lesion of developmental origin. Brain MRI revealed abnormalities in the right temporal lobe and Video-EEG monitoring revealed episodes clinically characterized by epileptic spasms followed by automotor seizures, with EEG findings suggestive of a right temporal lobe focus. Surgical resection resulted in excellent outcome.
Focal cortical dysplasia and pericentric inversion of chromosome 9: a case report

Abstract: A child affected by multiple dysmorphisms and behavioral disorders with pericentric inversion on chromosome 9 [46 XY inv 9 (p11q11)] is reported. In this patient, a focal cortical dysplasia in right temporal lobe was observed on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. To our knowledge, this report is the first description of focal cortical dysplasia in a patient of an occidental country with pericentric inversion of chromosome. 9. The relationship between alterations localised on chromosome 9 and cerebral cortical organisation disorders is discussed.

Abstract: This article emphasizes that the Einstein and Debye models of specific heats of solids are correlated more tightly than currently acknowledged. This correlation is evidenced without need of additional hypotheses on the early Einstein model. The results are also extensible to the case of a system of fermions; as an example, the specific heat of the electron sea in metals is inferred in the frame of the proposed approach only.
Many Electron Atoms: Ionization Energies of Transition Elements  [PDF]

Abstract: The paper introduces a theoretical model aimed to calculate the ionization energies of many electron atoms and their ions. The validity of the model, which implements the statistical formulation of the quantum uncertainty to infer a simple formula of ionization energy, has been already proven in a previous paper comparing systematically experimental and calculated values for elements with atomic numbers 2Z≤29, whose electron configurations include all ions with numbers ne of electrons 2neZ. The present paper enhances and extends the results previously obtained; the approach is now generalized to include even the transition elements and in particular the lanthanides and actinides. The validity of the proposed model is proven examining all experimental data of ionization energies of these elements and their ions available in literature.

If really in Nature everything changes and progresses, then at least two questions arise: 1) how can be these changes entropic but nonetheless somehow predictable without risk of oxymoronic behavior; 2) how can Science conform itself to follow this requirement of the Nature. To attempt an answer to these questions, the present paper introduces an ab initio theoretical model aimed to show that physical information is actually nothing else but straightforward quantum and relativistic implication of the concept of evolution.
The Structure and Dynamics of Cold Dark Matter Halos

Abstract: We investigate the internal structure of cold dark matter halos using high resolution N-body simulations. As the mass and force resolution are increased, halo density profiles become steeper, asymptoting to a slope of $\sim -4/3$ in the central regions and may not have converged to a unique result. At our highest resolution we have nearly 3 million particles within the virial radius, $R_{200}$, and force softening that is $\sim 0.2% R_{200}$. This resolution has also allowed us to resolve a large part of the overmerging problem - we find over 1000 surviving dark halos orbiting within a single cluster potential. These data have given us unprecedented insights into the dynamics and structure of ``halos within halos'', allowing us for the first time, to compare the distribution of dark matter with observations of galaxies in clusters.
