GUARDIOLA, ANA;PRATES, LISIANDRA ZILIO;RIBEIRO, MARLISE DE CASTRO;FERREIRA, MARCELO PAGLIOLI;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1999000100020
Abstract: tethered spinal cord (tsc) is a rare disorder; it occurs when the conus medularis is anchored to the base of the vertebral canal by thickened filum terminale cysts, lipoma and spinal dysraphia. this disorder may cause paraplegia, sensory and sphincter disturbance. we report a twenty-two months-old girl presenting with paraplegia. tsc diagnostic was confirmed by myelotomography. the patient was submitted to surgical relief of tethered filum terminale.
Holmes tremor in association with bilateral hypertrophic olivary degeneration and palatal tremor: chronological considerations. Case report
Rieder, Carlos R.M.;Rebou?as, Ricardo Gurgel;Ferreira, Marcelo Paglioli;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2003000300028
Abstract: hypertrophic olivary degeneration (hod) is a rare type of neuronal degeneration involving the dento-rubro-olivary pathway and presents clinically as palatal tremor. we present a 48 year old male patient who developed holmes' tremor and bilateral hod five months after brainstem hemorrhage. the severe rest tremor was refractory to pharmacotherapy and botulinum toxin injections, but was markedly reduced after thalamotomy. magnetic resonance imaging permitted visualization of hod, which appeared as a characteristic high signal intensity in the inferior olivary nuclei on t2- and proton-density-weighted images. enlargement of the inferior olivary nuclei was also noted. palatal tremor was absent in that moment and appears about two months later. the delayed-onset between insult and tremor following structural lesions of the brain suggest that compensatory or secondary changes in nervous system function must contribute to tremor genesis. the literature and imaging findings of this uncommon condition are reviewed.

Czepielewski, Mauro A.;Rollin, Guilherme A.F.S.;Casagrande, Alessandra;Ferreira, Marcelo Paglioli;Ferreira, Nelson P.;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302005000500008
Abstract: the pituitary gland, sella turcica and the parasellar region can be involved by a wide variety of lesions, including benign and malignant neoplasms as well as a wide variety of non neoplastic tumor-like lesions. clinical and radiological aspects could help in the differential diagnosis of these lesions. nevertheless, in many cases only the histopathological analysis could establish the definitive diagnosis. in this paper, we review the nonpituitary tumors of the sellar region emphasizing the associated hormonal disturbances.
Hematomas intraparenquimatosos espontaneos experiência com 134 casos
Kraemmer, Jorge L.;Bastos, Carlos A. Guimar?es;Brasil, Albert V. Berthier;Paglioli Neto, Eliseu;Ferreira, Nelson Pires;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1992000100003
Abstract: one hundred thirty four cases of spontaneous intraparenchymatous hematomas have been studied. they were separated into six groups according to criteria related to topography, level of consciousness, and hematoma volume. treatment protocols - conservative, conservative with i.c.p. monitoring, and surgical - were different in each group. results have shown an increased mortality (p<0.05) among patients whose level of consciousness were more severely compromised, in those older than 50 years old, and in those harbouring quadrilateral, intraventricular or brainstem hematomas. overall mortality was 26.1%.
Infections by protozoa in immunocompromised hosts
Ferreira, Marcelo Sim?o;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762000000700026
Abstract: protozoa are among the most important pathogens that can cause infection in immunocompromised patients. they infect particularly individuals with impaired cell immunity, such as those with hematologic neoplasias, those submitted to transplant of solid organs, those under high-dose corticosteroid therapy, and carriers of the human immunodeficiency virus. among the protozoa that most commonly cause disease in immunocompromised individuals are toxoplasma gondii, trypanosoma cruzi, cryptosporidium parvum, isospora belli, cyclospora cayetanensis and microsporidia; the former two cause severe encephalitis and myocarditis, and the others cause gastrointestinal infections. early diagnosis and prompt institution of specific therapy for each of these organisms are basic measures to decrease morbidity and mortality associated with these infections.

Abstract: some essential features of the pathogenic complex concept formulated by the french geographer max. sorre are presented, aiming at integrating epidemiological and geografic studies.
Uma observa??o sobre o lugar da teoria da liga??o e do critério temático dentro do programa minimalista
FERREIRA, Marcelo Barra;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502000000100007
Abstract: in this paper i present some evidencie that forces us to conclude that within the minimalist program (chomsky 1993; 1995), binding theory (bt) should be computed after lf (logical form). i show that derivations leading to structures containing violations of bt-principles must converge at lf, since less economical alternative derivations respecting those principles are also ungrammatical. being irrelevant to the notion of convergence, bt must apply after lf. a similar reasoning reveals that the theta-criterion should have the status of a bare output condition appling at lf, since less economical derivations are allowed by the computational system to prevent violations of it.
Consumo cultural e espa?os sociais: os vestibulandos das universidades públicas na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, 1990
Ferreira, Marcelo Costa;
Opini?o Pública , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-62762003000100007
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to inquiry about cultural capital and life style(s) associations among university applicants to the public universities of rio de janeiro at 1990. the puzzle is which social spaces and cultural consumer practices should be found among these prospective students? the data analysis is based on the social and cultural questionnaire research applied to all the applicant students of the year 1990 (year of) in the following institutions: the federal university of rio de janeiro (ufrj), the federal rural university of rio de janeiro (ufrrj), the federal fluminense university (uff), the state university of rio de janeiro (uerj) and the national school of statistical sciences, of brazilian institute of geography and statistics (ence/ibge). in short, two major findings are detached. the first one is that correspondence analysis plots of literary consumer consumption, cultural practices and inequalities attributes are summarized in three major clusters. the first is applicants with strong cultural capital, however without the same level of economic resources. the second is students with low access to cultural goods, and the third and middle segment has an average among the two others segments. the second finding is the high level of inequality to cultural resources access, even to the prospective students who are able to apply to a university.
