Abstract: We demonstrate that an experiment with recoilless resonant emission and absorption of tritium antineutrinos could have an important impact on our understanding of the origin of neutrino oscillations.

Abstract: The neutron flux induced by radioactivity at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory is revisited. We have performed calculations and Monte Carlo simulations; the results offer an independent check to the available experimental data reported by different authors, which vary rather widely. This study gives detailed information on the expected spectrum and on the variability of the neutron flux due to possible variations of the water content of the environment.
Light Concentrators for Borexino and CTF

Abstract: Light concentrators for the solar neutrino experiment Borexino and the Counting Test Facility (CTF) have been developed and constructed. They increase the light yield of these detectors by a factor of 2.5 and 8.8, respectively. Technical challenges like long term stability in various media, high reflectivity and radiopurity have been addressed and the concepts to overcome these difficulties will be described. Gamma spectroscopy measurements of the concentrators show an upper limit of 12e-6 Bq/g for uranium and a value of 120e-6 Bq/g for thorium. Upper limits on other possible contaminations like 26Al are presented. The impact of these results on the performance of Borexino and the CTF are discussed and it is shown that the design goals of both experiments are fulfilled.
Implications of the SNO and the Homestake Results for the BOREXINO Experiment

Abstract: Using the recent result of the SNO solar neutrino experiment, we have demonstrated in a model independent way that the contribution of Be-7 and other medium energy neutrinos to the event rate of the Homestake experiment is 4 sigma smaller than the BP2000 SSM prediction. We have considered the implications of this result for the future BOREXINO experiment.

Abstract: The new detection concept applied for the direct WIMP search experiment CRESST II, which enables a clear discrimination between electron recoils and nuclear recoils, will leave neutrons as the main background. This background will soon limit the sensitivity of the experiment and therefore become an important issue for the next phase of CRESST. We have performed a study based on Monte Carlo simulations to investigate how neutrons from different origins affect CRESST and which measures have to be taken to reach the projected sensitivity.

Abstract: The fluorescence decay-time constants have been measured for several scintillator mixtures based on phenyl-o-xylylethane (PXE) and linear alkylbenzene (LAB) solvents. The resulting values are of relevance for the physics performance of the proposed large-volume liquid scintillator detector LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy). In particular, the impact of the measured values to the search for proton decay via p -> K+ antineutrino is evaluated in this work.

Abstract: Emission spectra of several organic liquid-scintillator mixtures which are relevant for the proposed LENA detector have been measured by exciting the medium with electrons of ~10keV. The results are compared with spectra resulting from ultraviolet light excitation. Good agreement between spectra measured by both methods has been found.

Abstract: In the 1980s, measurements of the cumulative $\beta$ spectra of the fission products following the thermal neutron induced fission of $^{235}$U, $^{239}$Pu, and $^{241}$Pu were performed at the magnetic spectrometer BILL at the ILL in Grenoble. This data was published in bins of 250 keV. In this paper, we re-publish the original data in a binning of 50 keV for $^{235}$U and 100 keV for $^{239}$Pu and $^{241}$Pu.

Abstract: CRESST II is an experiment for direct WIMP search, using cryogenic detectors. The ratio of the two signals (temperature rise and scintillation light) measured for each interaction is an excellent parameter for discrimination of radioactive background. The main remaining background is the neutron flux present at the experimental site, since neutrons produce the same signals as WIMPs do. Based on Monte Carlo simulations the present work shows how neutrons from different origins affect CRESST and which measures have to be taken into account to reach the goal sensitivity.

Abstract: In experiments for direct dark matter searches, neutrinos coherently scattering off nuclei can produce similar events as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). To reach sensitivities better than about 10^-10 pb for the elastic WIMP nucleon spin-independent cross section in the zero-background limit, energy thresholds for nuclear recoils should be >2.05 keV for CaWO_4, >4.91 keV for Ge, >2.89 keV for Xe, >8.62 keV for Ar and >15.93 keV for Ne as target material. Atmospheric neutrinos limit the achievable sensitivity for the background-free direct dark matter search to >10^-12 pb.
