Abstract: the aim was to analyze the protein expression of apoptotic genes caspase-3, caspase-8 and bcl-2 with the immunohistochemistry technique, correlating with tumor grade (i, ii and iii) and with the patient survival in order to understand the basic mechanism of tumoral transformation. the immunohistochemistry reactions on 50 samples of squamous cell carcinoma were carried out with the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase method and antigen recovery. the analyses were made using the graduation method "in crosses" (0 to 4 crosses - no stain to more than 75% of positives cells) and in categories (low, intermediate, high) of the cytoplasm immunoreactivity of the epidermoid penile carcinoma cells. it was observed a statistically significant difference when the expression of caspase-3 were compared with the grades i and ii of the tumor (p=0.0010) and when comparing the patient survival with the grades i and ii of the tumor (p=0.0212). the protein bcl-2 was more expressed than caspase-3 and caspase-8 proteins, suggesting that the apoptotic rate in this carcinoma is low. the higher expression of the anti-apoptotic protein bcl-2 suggests a higher preservation of the tumoral cells.

The 2008 financial crisis catalyzed transformations in the global capitalism that predicted the débacle of the Anglo-American financial power bloc. One of the repercussions of such transformations is the evolution of the G-20. In this context, this article aims to analyze such transformations and, particularly, the role of four of the most important actors on G-20 summits: United States, China, Germany and Brazil.
Anti-Apoptotic Effect of Tax: An NF-κB Path or a CREB Way?
Daniela Saggioro
Viruses , 2011, DOI: 10.3390/v3071001
Abstract: The NF-κB pathway is intimately linked to the survival of mammalian cells, and its activation by Tax has consequently been considered important for human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-infected cell resistance to death. Very little emphasis has been given to other mechanisms, although Tax regulates the expression and activity of several cellular genes. The finding that CREB protein is activated in HTLV-1 infected cells underlines the possibility that other mechanisms of survival may be implicated in HTLV-1 infection. Indeed, CREB activation or overexpression plays a role in normal hematopoiesis, as well as in leukemia development, and CREB is considered as a survival factor in various cell systems. A better understanding of the different molecular mechanisms used by Tax to counteract cell death will also help in the development of new therapeutic strategies for HTLV-1 associated diseases.
Hegemonia e imperialismo: caracteriza??es da ordem mundial capitalista após a Segunda Guerra Mundial
Garcia, Ana Saggioro;
Contexto Internacional , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-85292010000100005
Abstract: the use of the concepts of hegemony and imperialism is interspersed in the literature of international relations to explain a hierarchical international order under the domination of one power. the term "imperialism" is generally used by marxists, to emphasize elements of coercion, which, differently than in classic imperialism, takes place today in a more opaque and indirect form. "hegemony" is used broadly by critical theorists, realists and institutionalists, emphasizing elements of consensus, such as rules, norms and international institutions. the period of u.s. dominance has been characterized with both terms.

Abstract: one of the most known policy of inventory management is the order quantity and reorder point, or policy. the purpose of this paper is to present a new analytical approach for evaluating reorder points in inventory management policies. this approach considers the reorder point as a function of forecasted demands in the planning horizon, which can vary through time. lead-times and forecast errors are the uncertainties present in the model. the composed distribution of these parameters is used to obtain an analytical expression for the proposed forecast based reorder point. simulation experiments are performed in order to validate and test the accuracy of the proposed model. the experiments consider different lead-time and demand distributions and also different magnitude of forecast errors. beyond the accuracy of the analytical model the simulations seeks to evaluate the premises adopted, mainly the one of normally distributed lead-time demand.
Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of Aluminum in Perchloric Acid  [PDF]
F. M. Mahgoub
Open Journal of Physical Chemistry (OJPC) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojpc.2013.34022
Abstract:

The effects of acetate, citrate, benzoate, tetra-ethylammonium iodide (TEA) and 1,4,8,11 tetra-azacyclo-tetradecane (cyclam) on the corrosion behavior of aluminum in 1 M HClO4 at 40°C were studied by potentiodynamic polarization technique. Acetate, citrate, and benzoate inhibited the corrosion of aluminum and shifted the breakdown potential to positive direction. Cyclam was investigated as a macrocyclic organic inhibitor to the acid corrosion of aluminum. The addition of cyclam to the corroding medium showed a pronounced effect on the anodic but not on the cathodic part of the polarization curve. The addition of TEA to the medium enhanced the corrosion rate and shifted the breakdown potential to more negative value as the concentration increased. The results were discussed on the basis of the adsorption mechanism and the nature of the adsorbed species.

A Critical Analysis of Empiricism  [PDF]

Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2014.43030
Abstract: Empiricism is a philosophical theory which argues that human knowledge is derived entirely from sensory experience. As a branch of epistemology, empiricism disregards the concept of instinctive ideas and focuses entirely on experience and evidence as it relates to sensory perception. Empiricism is a philosophical school holding that knowledge can only be (or is primarily) gained from sensory experience. Accordingly, it rejects any (or much) use of a priori reasoning in the gathering and analysis of knowledge. It rivals rationalism according to which reason is the ultimate source of knowledge. The philosophy of empiricism was first put forth in John Locke’s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Locke argued that the only way by which human acquire knowledge is through experience. Locke firmly argued that humans are incapable of formulating or possessing inherent ideas. The aim of this paper is to explain that the traditional empiricist standpoint in the fields of epistemology and then try to show that it is not adequate for explaining some things relevant to these fields. For that the traditional empiricist methods needs to be supplemented by extra-logical principles that are not strictly empirical.

Abstract: In order to investigate the contributions of the different regulatory processes to the timing of initiation of DNA replication at varying growth rates, we formulate a minimal quantitative model of the initiator circuit that includes the key ingredients known to regulate the activity of the DnaA protein. This model describes the average-cell oscillations in DnaA-ATP/DNA during the cell cycle, for varying growth rates. We evaluate the conditions under which this ratio attains the same threshold value at the time of initiation, independently of the growth rate.We find that a quantitative description of replication initiation by DnaA must rely on the dependency of the basic parameters on growth rate, in order to account for the timing of initiation of DNA replication at different cell doubling times. We isolate two main possible scenarios for this, depending on the roles of DnaA autoregulation and DnaA ATP-hydrolysis regulatory process. One possibility is that the basal rate of regulatory inactivation by ATP hydrolysis must vary with growth rate. Alternatively, some parameters defining promoter activity need to be a function of the growth rate. In either case, the basal rate of gene expression needs to increase with the growth rate, in accordance with the known characteristics of the dnaA promoter. Furthermore, both inactivation and autorepression reduce the amplitude of the cell-cycle oscillations of DnaA-ATP/DNA.The coordination of DNA replication with cell division in E. coli is a classic problem of bacterial physiology [1]. It is connected with the control of the bacterial DNA replication and cell division cycle as a function of the growth rate, and it is an essential component for evolutionary adaptation to fast-growing conditions [2]. It is also a classic problem for biological modeling [3-7]. The main outstanding questions have to do with the characterization of the network of regulatory interactions by which cells determine the timing of initiation and limit it
