On morality and chemistry
Hauke Fürstenwerth
Poiesis & Praxis , 2003, DOI: 10.1007/s10202-003-0037-2
Abstract: In this section I will not discuss the philosophical relationship of ethics and morality, nor reflect on whether certain moralities ought to be preferred over others, I will concentrate on the processes whereby in real life moral values are established and applied. Thus I am referring to values that will allow one, in specific contexts; to judge who morally is to be praised and who is to be blamed. Schummer [5] pretends to limit "responsibility" to a general level that does not allow such a differentiation. Although arguing in celestial spheres, he dares to draw far-reaching practical conclusions: "That moral conclusion does not only challenge individual chemists who synthesize new substances just because they did not exist before. It is also a moral challenge to the whole community of synthetic chemists for which synthesis is actually an end in itself. The fact that the internal norms and obligations of that community are not in agreement with general moral standards shows that the whole community does not recognize their general moral responsibility." One might expect a careful and comprehensive analysis before blaming a whole community of scientists of not recognizing their moral responsibility. However, Schummer fails to provide any evidence for that assertion. All he offers is his assumptions on internal norms and obligations of the community of synthetic chemists. Drawing far-reaching practical consequences from philosophical reasoning on general responsibility, based on hypothetical assumptions only, is lacking responsibility.
Encapsulating C59N azafullerene derivatives inside single-wall carbon nanotubes
F. Simon,H. Kuzmany,J. Bernardi,F. Hauke,A. Hirsch
Physics , 2006, DOI: 10.1002/pssb.200669200
Abstract: Filling of single-wall carbon nanotubes with C59N azafullerene derivatives is reported from toluene solvent at ambient temperature. The filling is characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The filling efficiency is the same as for C60 fullerenes and the tube-azafullerene interaction is similar to the tube-C60 interaction. Vacuum annealing of the encapsulated azafullerene results in the growth of inner tubes, however no spectroscopic signature of nitrogen built in the inner walls is detected.
Brunkhorst, Hauke;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002006000300005
Abstract: the interview deals with the constitution process of the european union. brunkhorst analyzes the juridical and institutional structure of unified europe and the recent political conjuncture, regarding the growth of right wing parties in the european parliament and the impact of the refusal of the european constitution in 2005's referenda. he also formulates an operational concept of legitimation to evaluate the democratic character of political decision-making in transnational level.
THE PRODUCTIVITY OF POWER: HANNAH ARENDT'S RENEWAL OF THE CLASSICAL CONCEPT OF POLITICS
BRUNKHORST,HAUKE;
Revista de ciencia política (Santiago) , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-090X2006000200007
Abstract: this essay traces the development of arendt's conception of power. this development corresponds to arendt's conviction that the advent of totalitarian forms of government set the idea of the modern nation-state, and of the rights of "man and citizen" associated with it, in an irrevocable crisis. to respond to this crisis, arendt attempts to conceive of power as something separate from, and in tension with, any form of government. power becomes characterized by its egalitarianism, dynamism, unpredictability, and capacity to innovate. the essay tries to show how these formal characteristics were originally ascribed a purely negative value by arendt, who associated them with totalitarian power, and that only after her work on totalitarianism does she revaluate them and provides arguments as to why her new concept of power is the only possible response to totalitarian phenomena
THE PRODUCTIVITY OF POWER: HANNAH ARENDT'S RENEWAL OF THE CLASSICAL CONCEPT OF POLITICS
HAUKE BRUNKHORST
Revista de Ciencia Política , 2006,
Abstract: This essay traces the development of Arendt's conception of power. The essay tries to show how these formal characteristics were originally ascribed a purely negative value by Arendt, who associated them with totalitarian power, and that only after her work on totalitarianism does she revaluate them and provides arguments as to why her new concept of power is the only possible response to totalitarian phenomena Este artículo resume la concepción de poder desarrollada por Hannah Arendt.
“Indépendance Cha Cha”: African Pop Music since the Independence Era “Indépendance Cha Cha”: Afrikanische Popmusik seit der Unabh ngigkeit
Hauke Dorsch
Africa Spectrum , 2010,
Abstract: Investigating why Latin American music came to be the soundtrack of the independence era, this contribution offers an overview of musical developments and cultural politics in certain sub-Saharan African countries since the 1960s. Focusing first on how the governments of newly independent African states used musical styles and musicians to support their nation-building projects, the article then looks at musicians’ more recent perspectives on the independence era.
Ilus es de factibilidade, declara es festivas e cantorias: sobre a rela o entre evolu o e revolu o no direito = Feasibility illusions, solemn declarations and chants: on the relationship between evolution and revolution in the law

Democracy under pressure: the return of the dialectic of enlightenment in the world society = Democracia sob press o: retorno à dialética do esclarecimento na sociedade mundial
Brunkhorst, Hauke
Civitas , 2010,
Quantum disorder in the spatially completely anisotropic triangular lattice II: frustrated hard-core bosons
Philipp Hauke
Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.014415
Abstract: Spin liquids occuring in 2D frustrated spin systems were initially assumed to appear at strongest frustration, but evidence grows that they more likely intervene at transitions between two different types of order. To identify if this is more general, we here analyze a generalization of the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice (SATL) with antiferromagnetic XY interactions, the spatially \emph{completely} anisotropic triangular lattice (SCATL). This model can be implemented in experiments with trapped ions, ultra-small Josephson junctions, or ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Using Takahashi's modified spin-wave theory, we find indications that indeed two different kinds of order are always separated by phases without magnetic long-range order. Our results further suggest that two gapped, magnetically-disordered phases, identified as distinct in the SATL, are actually continuously connected via the additional anisotropy of the SCATL. As these results indicate, this additional anisotropy -- allowing to approach quantum-disordered phases from different angles -- can give fundamental insight into the nature of quantum disordered phases. We complement our results by exact diagonalizations, which also indicate that in part of the gapped non-magnetic phase, chiral long-range correlations could survive.
