Abstract: introduction: if, on one hand, the colorectal cancer is a worldwide health problem that kills around 600,000 people each year, on the other hand, it’s the malignant tumor that is most likely to be prevented. objectives: to investigate knowledge and attitudes towards colorectal cancer and its screening in order to identify the factors that may contribute to its low acceptance. methods: application of 696 questionnaires with questions about: socio-demographic data, knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and information on colorectal cancer. sample selected by quotas, according to the proportion of individuals of both sexes, from the age of 40, resident in each of the 15 parishes of oporto. results: most respondents (63.2%) knew at least one of the main screening tests, of which we highlight the positive association between this knowledge and the information source ‘‘doctors and nurses’’ with 10.51 times more correct answers. the population in general had a positive attitude towards the utility of screening tests for colorectal cancer, with 49.7% of the respondentes assigning the highest score on their usefulness. only 20.4% of the individuals had a positive attitude towards having screening tests for colorectal cancer, having had at least one test; this attitude was significantly associated only with the recommendation for having at least one screening test. conclusions: despite having showed little knowledge about the colorectal cancer screening, the population from oporto was receptive to it. however, the percentage of individuals with past practice of screening was reduced, related to the lack of medical recommendation for tests. doctors and nurses had a positive influence as a source of information on colorectal cancer. it became evident the need to invest in both primary prevention, through health educations on colorectal cancer and its screening, and secondary prevention, through the free screening to all citizens.

Abstract: Introdu o: Se, por um lado, o cancro colorretal é um problema de saúde mundial que mata cerca de 600 000 indivíduos por ano, por outro, é o tumor maligno mais suscetível de ser prevenido. Objetivos: Investigar conhecimentos e atitudes em rela o ao cancro colorretal e ao seu rastreio de forma a identificar fatores que possam contribuir para a baixa ades o ao mesmo. Métodos: Aplica o de 696 questionários com quest es sobre: dados sociodemográficos, conhecimentos, atitudes, comportamentos e informa o sobre o cancro colorretal. Amostra selecionada por quotas, de acordo com a propor o de indivíduos de ambos os sexos, a partir dos 40 anos, residentes em cada uma das 15 freguesias da cidade do Porto. Resultados: A maioria dos inquiridos (63,2%) conhecia, pelo menos, um dos principais exames de rastreio, de onde se destacou a associa o positiva entre este conhecimento e a fonte de informa o médicos e enfermeiros , com 10,51 vezes mais respostas corretas. A popula o em geral tinha uma atitude positiva em rela o à utilidade dos exames de rastreio do cancro colorretal, com 49,7% dos inquiridos a atribuir a pontua o máxima à sua utilidade. Apenas 20,4% dos indivíduos tinha uma atitude positiva em rela o à realiza o de exames de rastreio do cancro colorretal, tendo realizado, pelo menos, um exame; esta atitude foi associada de forma significativa, unicamente, com a recomenda o de, no mínimo, um exame de rastreio. Conclus es: Os portuenses evidenciaram poucos conhecimentos quanto ao rastreio do cancro colorretal, mas mostraram-se recetivos ao mesmo. Contudo, a percentagem de indivíduos com práticas anteriores de rastreio foi reduzida, relacionada com a falta de recomenda o médica de exames. Os médicos e enfermeiros tiveram influência positiva como fonte de informa o sobre o cancro colorretal. Evidenciou-se a necessidade de investir tanto na preven o primária, através de educa es para a saúde sobre o cancro colorretal e o seu rastreio, como na preven o secundária, através do acesso gratuito ao rastreio a todos os cidad os. Moraes, Rodrigo A.;Matos, Carolina F.;Castro, Eryza G.;Schreiner, Wido H.;Oliveira, Marcela M.;Zarbin, Aldo J. G.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532011001100024
Abstract: the effect of five different chemical treatments (hno3, h2so4, h2o2, hno3 + h2so4 and hno3 + hcl) on the homogeneity, surface chemistry, structure and dispersibility in water of iron- and iron oxide-filled multi-walled carbon nanotube samples was evaluated by x-ray diffractometry (xrd), raman, uv-visible and x-ray photoelectron (xps) spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (tg) and scanning electron microscopy (sem). the results indicate that the chemical treatments are generally effective in removing non-nanotube carbonaceous species present in the sample. with the exception of the h2o2 treatment, the chemical treatments also offer good removal of free iron-species. besides the increase in the sample homogeneity, the chemical treatments promoted an increase in the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups at the carbon nanotube surface, what directly affects the dispersibility of these carbon nanotubes in water. dispersions of 2.24 × 10-1 g l-1 were obtained for the treated samples with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acid.

Abstract: aiming the identification of citrus varieties better adapted to coastal table lands, considering their potential use as rootstocks, the performance of different genotypes for drought tolerance was evaluated, considering their physiological indices related to the growth analyses. the study was carried out in a greenhouse condition of the embrapa cassava & tropical fruits. six genotypes were studied: rangpur lime, volkamer lemon, sour orange, and the hybrids htr - 051, tsk ? cttr - 002 and tsk ? cttr - 017, all from the citrus breeding program of the embrapa cassava & tropical fruits. seedlings were grown in plantmaxa growing media, irrigated adequately until they showed two pairs of true leaves. afterward, they were transplanted to containers with the same growing media, but chemically fertilized. seedlings were irrigated until sampling began. the experimental design was completely randomized under a 6 ? 7 factorial, corresponding to six genotypes and seven evaluation sampling dates. the evaluations were carried out for seedlings under irrigation, water deficit, and re-watering. it was evaluated dry matter accumulation (dm), for their different fractions (root and above ground), and leaf area (la) as the bases for the determination of the physiological indices: leaf area ratio (lar), net assimilation rate (nar) and relative growth ratio (rgr). it could be concluded that the hybrid htr - 051 presented less sensibility to the water deficit, suggesting that it could be indicated as a promissory citrus rootstock for water deficit conditions.
A paisagem duriense a partir de uma obra de John Gibbons
Fátima Loureiro de Matos
Revista da Faculdade de Letras : Geografia , 2012,
Abstract: In this article from the book of John Gibbons I Gathered no Moss, we describe the landscape of the Douro see from a small village lost in the slops of this river, Coleja, in the municipality of Carrazeda de Ansi es. John Gibbon s book can be included in travel reports, written by foreign authors, which earn large expansion from the mid 18th century, a body which became known as "travel literature". In these reports emerged descriptions of landscapes that reveal a sensitivity fully of Romanticism, don't have a scientific nature, intended primarily to public readers. The author remains in Coleja four months and describes in detail the characteristics of the region and the population, in addition to other journeys that he does, such as to Carrazeda de Ansi es, to Porto and Miranda do Douro.
Scalar Fields as Dark Matter in Spiral Galaxies

Physics , 1998, DOI: 10.1088/0264-9381/17/1/102
Abstract: We present a model for the dark matter in spiral galaxies, which is a result of a static and axial symmetric exact solution of the Einstein-Dilaton theory. We suposse that dark matter is a scalar field endowed with a scalar potential. We obtain that a) the effective energy density goes like $1/(r^2+r_{c}^{2})$ and b) the resulting circular velocity profile of tests particles is in good agreement with the observed one.

Quintessence at Galactic Level?
T. Matos,F. S. Guzman
Physics , 2000,
Abstract: Recently it has been proposed that the main contributor to the dark energy of the Universe is a dynamical, slow evolving, spatially inhomogeneous scalar field called quintessence. We investigate the behavior of this scalar field at galactic level by assuming that it is the dark matter compossing the halos of galaxies. Using an exact solution of the Einstein's equations we find an excellent concordance between our results and observations.
On the Space Time of a Galaxy
T. Matos,F. S. Guzman
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1088/0264-9381/18/23/303
Abstract: We present an exact solution of the averaged Einstein's field equations in the presence of two real scalar fields and a component of dust with spherical symmetry. We suggest that the space-time found provides the characteristics required by a galactic model that could explain the supermassive central object and the dark matter halo at once, since one of the fields constitutes a central oscillaton surrounded by the dust and the other scalar field distributes far from the coordinate center and can be interpreted as a halo. We show the behavior of the rotation curves all along the background. Thus, the solution could be a first approximation of a ``long exposition photograph'' of a galaxy.
