Objectives: To determine the metric properties of EUROQoL and to optimize the metric properties of COOP/WONCA on people suffering from hip and knee osteoarthritis, via telephone. Also to identify the convergence validity between them. Methods: A descriptive study design is performed at "La Merced" (Osuna-Sevilla) and "Torrecárdenas" (Almería) Hospitals, via telephone interview since October 2004 to November 2006. The study included all people suffering from hip and knee osteoarthritis and awaiting for a surgical intervention. Results: COOP/WONCA obtained a maximum value of 79,9% on endorsement frequency. Main components factorial analysis resulted on two items with a value below 0,5; and the greatest explained total variance -71,09%- of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) with two components of 50,70% and 20,

Abstract: Objective: To identify the factors associated with Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL), and Symptoms and Physical Functional Disability (S&PFD) after a Hip or Knee Total Replacement, according to a gender approach. A longitudinal cohort study design is performed at “La Merced” (Osuna. Sevilla) and “Torrecárdenas” (Almería) Hospitals, via telephone interview since October 2004 to November 2006. The study included all people who underwent a hip or knee total replacement. The dependent variables were HRQL and S&PFD, both measured via short versions of the COOP/WONCA and WOMAC questionnaires. Results: 311 people were included, who were mostly women (82,63%) and 70 years old (average). The hip and knee replacement obtained an statistically significant improvement on HRQL (20,5%) and S&PFD (28,2%), with no gender difference. Five variables were associated to HRQL for Women: HRQL previous to surgery, hospital, local infection as a complication, autonomy for daily living, and marital status. All of them were associated to men, except the last two ones. About S&PFD, six variables were associated for women: HRQL and S&PFD previous to surgery, hospital, local infection as a complication, body mass index and marital status. All of them were associated to men, except the last two ones.Factors associated to improve on HRQL and S&PFD in male population are few, though they find a great explanation of the improvement. Different situation arise on female population because more factors obtained a substantially inferior explanation.

The lower extremity wounds are a serious health problem that affects a large number of patients, thereby assuming a great challenge to work for health professionals. Hyperoxygenated fatty acids (AGHO), have demonstrated efficacy in the prevention of this type of ulcers. Thanks to the good results obtained in a previous study, we plan to continue evaluating the effectiveness of Mepentol Leche, an emulsion-based hyper-oxygenated fatty acids, Aloe barbadensis and Mimosa tenuiflora in skin care and relief of symptoms, in patients with this problem, but expanding the sample size and focusing on diabetic patients with concomitant diseases. Also in this study have been involving nurses in six provinces: Almería, Alicante, Granada, Seville, Malaga and Ceuta. Again with this study, a total of 2,145 patients, we demonstrated that no patient has ulcerated during the follow-up and treatment with Mepentol Leche and its systematic application significantly improves the symptoms before the onset of ulcers, preventing dryness skin, reducing itching, burning, pain and eczema, and returning the skin of these patients to their normal color.

Modifications in the landscape can lead to the development and proliferation of some Culicidae species, in detriment of others. As a result, some species may be forced to move to other places or become locally extinct. Based on these changes, some species can beused as bioindicators of environmental degradation. The aim of this study was to assess Culicidae composition and richness in two Atlantic Forest sites (Carvalho and Trilha; State of Paraná, Brazil), and to evaluate whether they can be used as indicators of environmental degradation of these sites. Culicidae samplings were performed between December 2002 and May 2003, using a manual electric aspirator. The study identified 48 species and 636 specimens of Culicidae. Species composition and species richness of Culicidae differed between the two studied forest fragments, possibly as a result of the varying conservation levels of theses sites. The higher values of richness observed in Carvalho, as well as the predominance of species from the Sabethini tribe and Kerteszia species, indicate reduced human interference in this forest fragment. In contrast, species composition and reduced richness in Trilha indicate a high level of environmental degradation.

Revista Latina de Comunicación Social , 2009,
Abstract: This paper investigates the key elements of the audiovisual policy of the International Organization of la Francophonie (OIF). The hypothesis to be tested is that the audiovisual policy of la Francophonie presents a fundamental concept of the audiovisual. This study is exploratory in nature and considers only the last ten years of la Francophonie. The research presents a mixed methodological approach that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Many items have been analyzed: frameworks for action and declarations, the structure of the organization in the audiovisual area and programs and major projects. One of the most important conclusions of this study is that audiovisual policy of the OIF is characterized by diversity, as well as by its link with culture. However, the OIF tries to ensure the presence of the French universe, ignoring the voices of the rest of the organization.

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2011.22019
Abstract: The new phosphogypsum (PG) waste management policy allowed to reduce the negative environmental impact of this residue by finding better alternatives uses with an extremely limited radiological impact. Building material could be one of these alternatives that could lead to the production of final products with good mechanical properties and very limited radionuclides content. The optimization of the radioactive levels in the building materials when PG is used for its production requires the previous knowledge of the content of naturally occurring radionuclides in the PG waste. This article aims the radioactive characterization of two different PG sources (from Spain (Fertiberia S.A., Huelva) and Tunisia (Sfax), before being incorporated in building materials. For this purpose, the natural selected radionuclides content belonging to uranium and thorium decay series and 40K was determined, by means of two different methods: i) gamma spectrometry with high-purity germanium detectors and ii) laser-induced kinetic phosphorimetry (KPA-11 Chemcheck Instruments Inc., Richland, WA). Also, the semiquantitative chemical composition, the mineralogical study and the morphological aspect of the PG samples were analysed. The results obtained from both techniques show that 226Ra and 210Po are the main source of the radioactivity in both studied PG samples. However, PG samples from Tunisia present low natural radionuclide levels (30.7 Bq?kg–1 average value for 238U, 188 Bq?kg–1(226Ra), 163 Bq?kg–1(210Pb), 12.4 Bq?kg–1 (232Th)) compared to the level of natural radionuclides in PG samples from Huelva (102 Bq?kg–1 average value for 238U, 520 Bq?kg–1(226Ra), 881 Bq?kg-1(210Pb) and 8 Bq?kg-1 (232Th). Both PG fulfil European Commission Recommendation (ECR) for the maximum activity concentrations of naturally-occurring radionuclides for industrial by product used in building materials in the European Union.

Abstract:

In this paper we report the results of our experimental work conducted to decoloration of a well-known highly toxic Amaranth dye by electrochemical and photoelectrochemical methods. Throughout this investigation were used two different Dimensional Stable Anode (DSA) electrodes, namely, IrO2-Ru2O-SnO2-TiO2/Ti and Ru2O-SnO2-TiO2/Ti. The experimental results show that IrO2-Ru2O-SnO2-TiO2/Ti electrode has higher performance on amaranth decoloration than Ru2O-SnO2-TiO2/Ti electrode, but with the disadvantage of higher energy consumption. For higher degradation of Amaranth dye with both DSA electrodes, the process was carried out via photoelectrochemical method. Our experimental results clearly shown the decrease in absorbance of all UV-Vis peaks due to the mineralization of the azo dye; also, it was noteworthy photoelectrochemical process consumes less energy under the same experimental conditions than electrochemical process. The IrO2-Ru2O-SnO2-TiO2/Ti electrode reaches a higher degradation degree of Amaranth solutions than Ru2O-SnO2-TiO2/Ti electrode using a photoelectrochemical technique.
