Revista Espa?ola de Enfermedades Digestivas , 2013,
Abstract: Objectives: to describe the clinical practice and the factors associated with length of hospital stay in mild acute pancreatitis. Methods: we present a retrospective observational study that includes a series of patients admitted to our hospital between January 2007 and December 2009 due to mild acute pancreatitis. Baseline data, treatments and examinations were collected. Variables associated with the length of hospital were determined using a Cox proportional hazards model. Results: 232 patients were included (median age 74.3 years, bedside index for severity in acute pancreatitis score 1, comorbidity Charlson score 1, 52.6 % male). 75.9 % were admitted to the gastroenterology department. Oral diet was reintroduced at 3 (0-11) days and 28 patients (12 %) were intolerant to oral re-feeding. Abdominal ultrasound, a magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic ultrasound, a computed tomographic scan, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography were performed in 92.2, 34.5, 9.5, 28.4 and 14.7 % of admissions, respectively. The length of hospital stay was 8 (1-31) days. The variables independently associated with length of admission were: Charlson index ≥ 2 (hazard ratio-HR-1.4, 95 % confidence interval-CI- 1.06-1.84; p: 0.017), admission in gastroenterology department (HR 0.67, 95 % CI 0.49 to 0.93; p: 0.016), fasting period ≥ 3 days (HR 1.37, 95 % CI 1.05-1.78; p: 0.02), intolerance to oral re-feeding (HR 1.8, 95 % CI 1.17-2.77; p: 0.007), performance of computed tomographic scan (HR 2.05, 95 % CI 1.49-2.82; p < 0.001), magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (HR 1.87, 95 % CI 1.42-2.49; p < 0.001) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (HR 2.23, 95 % CI 1.51-3.3; p < 0.001). Conclusions: the variables associated with length of hospital stay were comorbidity, department in charge, fasting period, food intolerance and complementary explorations.

Abstract: a 2k multifactorial design with central points was developed in order to evaluate the effect of different levels of sodium sulfite, l-ascorbic acid, and citric acid dissolved in sucrose syrups of different concentrations during the development of banana?s browning for 4, 8 and 12 days of storage through the measurement of the net color change (de). optimal use of inhibitors was determined through response surface analysis from experimental data. it was observed, using a confidence level of 95%, that vacuum impregnation using a syrup with 300 ppm (w/w) of sodium sulfite, 1% (w/w) of l- ascorbic acid, 1% (w/w) of citric acid and 30% (w/w) of sucrose, minimized the net color change of the fruit during eight days of storage, even when sensory acceptance of the product to the quality attribute studied is only during four days of storage.

Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant potential of extracts of Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC. (kale) and several materials of Pieris brassicae L., a common pest of Brassica cultures using a cellular model with hamster lung fibroblast (V79 cells) under quiescent conditions and subjected to H2O2-induced oxidative stress. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and glutathione was determined by the 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB)-oxidized glutathione (GSSG) reductase recycling assay. The phenolic composition of the extracts was also established by HPLC-DAD. They presented acylated and non acylated flavonoid glycosides, some of them sulfated, and hydroxycinnamic acyl gentiobiosides. All extracts were cytotoxic by themselves at high concentrations and failed to protect V79 cells against H2O2 acute toxicity. No relationship between phenolic composition and cytotoxicity of the extracts was found. Rather, a significant increase in glutathione was observed in cells exposed to kale extract, which contained the highest amount and variety of flavonoids. It can be concluded that although flavonoids-rich extracts have the ability to increase cellular antioxidant defenses, the use of extracts of kale and P. brassicae materials by pharmaceutical or food industries, may constitute an insult to health, especially to debilitated individuals, if high doses are consumed.

Abstract: Social pressures, economic, political, institutional and ethical are demanding significant changes in organizations in their relations with the environment. In this new environment set up requires a proactive attitude of companies towards their conduct environmental and social. In this context, this paper aims at identifying the social and environmental practices in companies potentially polluting or using environmental resources in the municipality of Sousa - PB. Specifically aims to:determine possible environmental models and tools (social and environmental practices) used by enterprises, identifyenvironmental strategy adopted by companies and describe the perception of some stakeholders about the environmental practices of the companies and the sustainability of the municipality. The research was conducted in an exploratory and descriptive through the inductive method. The survey results identified that the vast majority of companies presents an environmental strategy guided by legal requirements and do not use performance indicators in environmental and socialmanagement system. The social actors interviewed are unaware of corporate environmental strategy. The elements necessary for the company to contribute to the sustainability of the municipality were perceived differently by the actors interviewed

Revista Espa?ola de Enfermedades Digestivas , 2010, DOI: 10.4321/S1130-01082010000300006
Abstract: the celiac axis compression syndrome (cacs) due to median arcuate ligament (mal) was first described by harjola in 1963; originating postpandrial abdominal pain, weight loss, epigastric bruit and celiac axis stenosis > 75% in angiographic studies. this clinical condition has been the origin of controversies about its pathogenesis, diagnosis and its long term clinical results. advances in diagnostic imaging as 64 multidetector-row ct (mdct), 3-d reconstruction, magnetic resonance (mr) and color duplex ultrasonography, provide better understanding of the syndrome and allow to identify the best candidates for surgical division of mal fibers. since the introduction of laparoscopic approach, and also endovascular procedures, in 2000, a new perspective has established in this challenging syndrome. with the occasion of our own experience, a critical review of the syndrome is presented.

Introduction: Refractory solid tumours lead children deaths. To change this statement, new treatments should be developed. Natural Killer cells constitute the first line of defence against tumour cells. We propose a new strategy for antitumor cell therapy in children with refractory solid malignancies: IL-15 stimulated NK cells. Patients and methods: 22 paediatric patients suffering refractory solid tumours participate in this study. We compare NK cell subsets and K562 cytotoxicity in patients and sex-age pair's healthy controls. We use multiparametric flow and time-resolved fluorescent, respectively. In immunocompromised mice we developed an aggressive human metastatic neuroblastoma model and IL-15 stimulated NK cells rescue. Results: Patients had higher NK bright cells subset and lower NK cytotoxicity than healthy controls. IL-15 stimulated NK cells improved NK cell cytotoxicity in vitro and decreased tumour burden in vivo. Conclusions: IL-15 stimulated NK cells may constitute a new cell therapy tool for paediatric refractory tumours.
