Infection cases in infants and small children with atopic dermatitis – own observations

Abstract: Introduction:The purpose of the work is to estimate the frequency of occurrence of various infections in infants and small children, aged between 0 and 36 months with atopic dermatitis in the practice of a family doctor.Material/Methods:The study has been conducted on the basis of the retrospective analysis of medical documentation of disease among children born in 2005–2008 treated in Outpatient Clinic of the Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital in Lodz.Results:Children suffering from atopic dermatitis are more prone to develop infectious diseases.Conclusions:Infectious diseases in children with atopic dermatitis are of more chronic nature and more often require antibiotic therapy. Such children often manifest chronic diarrhea and their stool contains Staphylococcus aureus. They are more often hospitalized because of difficulty in setting a diagnosis and applying treatment in outpatient clinics.
Investigations of seborrheic dermatitis. Part II. Influenceof itraconazole on the clinical condition and the level of selected cytokinesin seborrheic dermatitis

Abstract: Introduction:The pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis has not been fully elucidated. A number of anascogenic yeasts of Malassezia spp. appear to be involved in the intensity of the symptoms. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the levels of selected inflammatory cytokines, IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α, in the serum after treatment with itraconazole.Material/Methods:Sixty-six subjects were enrolled in the study. The control group consisted of 30 participants (23 females and 7 males) without any clinical disorders, aged 24–65 (37.41±6.08 years). Thirty-six patients with seborrheic dermatitis (16 females and 20 males), aged 19–76 (38.61±13.77), constituted the study group. The measurement of IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α levels was performed by ELISA using a Human High Sensitivity kit (Diaclone, France).Results:After six-week treatment with itraconazole administered daily at a dose of 200 mg using pulse therapy, there was remission of the disease or at least substantial clinical improvement in the patients with seborrheic dermatitis. The levels of IL-2 and IFN-γ cytokines in the study group were higher than in the control group. After the treatment the level of IFN-γ secretion in the male patients with seborrheic dermatitis significantly increased. The levels of the other studied cytokines did not significantly differ.Conclusions:The treatment with itraconazole had a beneficial effect on the clinical condition of the skin of the patients. IFN-γ is a cytokine whose secretion might affect the condition of the skin in seborrheic dermatitis.

Abstract: Introduction:The etiology of seborrheic dermatitis is not fully understood. It has been observed that a number of anascogenic yeasts of Malassezia spp. is related to the intensity of the symptoms. The aim of the study is to measure the concentration of selected inflammatory factors IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α in the serum by an immunoenzymatic method, as well as to confirm the relationship between the studied factors and the clinical condition of the patients (sex, the intensity of skin lesions according to the Scaparro scale) and, finally, to compare the results with the control group.Material/Methods:The total number of subjects who participated in the study was 66. The control group (C) consisted of 30 volunteers (23 females and 7 males), with no clinical disorders, aged 24–65 (37.41±6.08 years). Thirty-six patients with seborrheic dermatitis (16 females and 20 males), aged 19–76 (38.61±13.77), made up the study group. The determination of IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α was performed by ELISA using a Human High Sensitivity kit (Diaclone, France). Clinically, the intensity of the disease process was evaluated on the Scaparro et al. scale, as modified by Kaszuba.Results:We observed statistically significantly higher levels of IL-2 and IFN-γ in patients with seborrheic dermatitis compared to the control group.Conclusions:We conclude that seborrheic dermatitis is a dermatosis characterized by a cell type immune response with an important role of IFN-γ and IL-2.

Abstract: Chronic dermatological diseases such as: psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, acne and rosacea have a negative impact on patients` quality of life. Patients very often experience stress and feelings of stigma and more often than general population suffer from various mental disorders, including depression. The presence of disease has a negative impact not only on family, but also on an occupational life. The quality of life study provides valuable information which gives a better understanding of the patients` needs. The role of stress in pathogenesis of some dermatological diseases and the influence of chronic dermatoses on selected parameters of patients` quality of life were presented in this article.

Abstract: Since allergic diseases are more and more common nowadays, they are a very important clinical problem. The effective treatment of these diseases in childhood may contribute to decreasing diseases at a later time. The role of general practitioners in diagnosing atopic dermatitis is extremely significant, because they are the first who examine children with atopic lesions. They ought to educate parents about the basic knowledge, identification and elimination contributing factors of atopic dermatitis and systematically control children's health. The treatment should be based on the close cooperation of general practitioners, paediatricians, allergologists and dermatologists because atopic dermatitis may be the starting point of chronic disease process.

Abstract: The paper presents a research on abrasion resistance of aluminium-based composites consisting of EN AC-44200 matrix reinforcedwith AlB2BOB3B particles. The examinations revealed that wear intensity of the composites decreased with increasing volume fraction of the particles. Much more intensive abrasive wear was observed on the first kilometre in comparison to the wear on the subsequent distances, i.e. from 1 to 3.5 km and from 3.5 to 8.5 km of the wear distance. Microscopic examinations permitted determining the way and type of wear occurring in the examined materials. In the case of the AC-44200 matrix, typical adhesive wear is observed. In composite materials however, abrasive wear prevails over adhesive wear. Increased volume fraction of AlB2BOB3B particles in composite materials results in increasing friction factor in average by 0.250 per each 10 vol.%. Wear of the cast-iron counterspecimen is also strongly dependent on volume fraction of the reinforcing particles. The counterspecimen demonstrates the largest wear when working in contact with a composite material containing 40 vol.% of AlB2BOB3B particles.
Production and wear properties of copper based MMC strengthened with δ-alumina fibres

Abstract: The investigation was carried out on the production by pressure infiltration (squeeze casting) of metal matrix composite materialsbased on pure Cu-ETP copper containing δ-alumina SAFFIL fibres The microstructure of composite specimens and morphology wasexamined using SEM and optical microscopy. Physical properties: Brinell hardness HBW and density were characterized. Preforms with10, 15 and 20 vol. % of fibres were preheated and infiltrated applying the infiltration pressure of 100 MPa. The strengthening of matrix with SAFFIL fibres resulted in significant increase of hardness. Metallographic examinations showed, that SAFFIL fibres are not destroyed in course of the infiltration process and are uniformly distributed in copper matrix. SEM observations confirm the poorwettability of fibres by liquid Cu-ETP. The wear of manufactured MMCs during dry sliding against cast iron applying a pin-on-disc testerwere recorded after 1, 3.5 and 8.5 km of friction distance. Increasing content of SAFFIL fibres in the copper matrix results in the significant decreasing of wear.
Tribological studies of composite material based on CuZn38Al2Mn1Fe brass strengthened with δ-alumina fibres

Abstract: The results of tribological studies (friction coefficient, wear resistance) of the frictional couple of composite material based on CuZn38Al2Mn1Fe brass strengthened with δ-alumina fibres (Saffil) and cast iron are shown in this paper. The wear investigations were conducted applying the tribological pin-on-disc tester and the friction forces between composite materials containing 10 and 20 vol. % of δ-alumina fibres (Saffil) and cast iron were registered. Wear was determined on the base of the specimen mass loss after 1, 3,5 and 8.5 km of friction distance.
