Abstract: Endometriosis is defined as the presence of functioning endometrial tissue outside the uterinecavity, and the standard treatment is extensive surgical excision. Cesarean scar endometriosisis a type of cutaneous endometriosis arising on or near a Cesarean section scar. A 44-year-oldwoman presented with a 9×6 cm sized dark-brown, stony-hard, irregular, lower abdominalmass of four years duration. The patient had a history of two Cesarean deliveries, 14 and16 years ago. Suspecting endometriosis, we excised the tumor conservatively rather thanextensively to prevent incisional hernia considering the benign nature of the tumor andthe low possibility of recurrence because the patient’s age was near menopause, alongwith simultaneous bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy that was performed in this case. Onreconstruction, mini-abdominoplasty was adopted to avoid possible wound complicationsand cosmetic deformities. The patient was satisfied with the cosmetic results, and neitherrecurrence nor functional problems occurred during the 1-year follow-up period. Plasticsurgeons should keep in mind the possibility of cutaneous endometriosis in an abdominalmass of a female of reproductive age with a previous history of pelvic or intra-abdominalsurgery. An optimal result from oncological, functional, and cosmetic standpoints can beachieved with conservative excision followed by mini-abdominoplasty of extensive Cesareanscar endometriosis.

Abstract: To investigate the therapeutic effect of a Korean herbal medicinePulsatilla koreana as an anti-septic agent, anti-inflammatoryeffects of the herbal medicine were determined in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-exposed rats. Treatment with a methanol extractfrom Pulsatilla koreana significantly inhibited LPS-inducedinflammatory responses. Results from ELISA analysis showed thatPulsatilla koreana decreased the plasma and hepatic levels ofpro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α whileincreased the level of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 inLPS-exposed rats. Pulsatilla koreana also decreased the plasmalevels of other inflammatory mediators such as NO3-/NO2-,ICAM-1, PGE2, and CINC-1 in LPS-exposed rats. Although nosignificant effects were observed in the phagocytic activities, thedistribution of lymphocyte population was significantly shiftedby the treatment with Pulsatilla koreana. All together, Pulsatillakoreana exerts anti-inflammatory activities in the immunechallengedanimals implicating that this Korean herbal medicineis therapeutically useful for the treatment of inflammatorydiseases like sepsis.

Abstract: The Cymatium Roding, 1798 is a small- to large-sized marine gastropod genus. Three species has been reported thus far for Cymatium in the Korean waters. In general, Cymatium encausticum (Reeve, 1844) is known to occur in tropical seawaters including the Philippine Islands along with its congeners C. gutturnium, C. springsteeni, and C. exile. A single individual of the species was collected from Jejudo Island by SCUBA diving and morphological features were observed using a stereomicroscope. This is the first study to report the occurrence of Cymatium encausticum (Reeve, 1844) from the Korean waters, providing a detailed description of the species with the illustration for the shell morphology.

Abstract: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA is often integrated intohepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although the relationshipbetween HBV integration and HCC development has beenwidely studied, the role of HBV integration in HCCdevelopment is still not completely understood. In the presentstudy, we constructed a pooled BAC library of 9 establishedcell lines derived from HCC patients with HBV infections. Byamplifying viral genes and superpooling of BAC clones, weidentified 2 clones harboring integrated HBV DNA. Screeningof host-virus junctions by repeated sequencing revealed anHBV DNA integration site on chromosome 11q13 in theSNU-886 cell line. The structure and rearrangement ofintegrated HBV DNA were extensively analyzed. An invertedduplicated structure, with fusion of at least 2 HBV DNAmolecules in opposite orientations, was identified in theregion. The gene expression of cancer-related genes increasednear the viral integration site in HCC cell line SNU-886.

Abstract: Background Patients have anxiety and fear of complications due to general anesthesia.Through new instruments and local anesthetic drugs, a variety of anesthetic methods havebeen introduced. These methods keep hospital costs down and save time for patients. Inparticular, the target-controlled infusion (TCI) system maintains a relatively accurate level ofplasma concentration, so the depth of anesthesia can be adjusted more easily. We conductedthis study to examine whether intravenous anesthesia using the TCI system with propofol andremifentanil would be an effective method of anesthesia in breast augmentation. Methods This study recruited 100 patients who underwent breast augmentation surgeryfrom February to August 2011. Intravenous anesthesia was performed with 10 mg/mLpropofol and 50 μg/mL remifentanil simultaneously administered using two separate modulesof a continuous computer-assisted TCI system. The average target concentration was set at2 μg/mL and 2 ng/mL for propofol and remifentanil, respectively, and titrated against clinicaleffect and vital signs. Oxygen saturation, electrocardiography, and respiratory status werecontinuously measured during surgery. Blood pressure was measured at 5-minute intervals.Information collected includes total duration of surgery, dose of drugs administered duringsurgery, memory about surgery, and side effects. Results Intraoperatively, there was transient hypotension in two cases and hypoxia in threecases. However, there were no serious complications due to anesthesia such as respiratorydifficulty, deep vein thrombosis, or malignant hypertension, for which an endotrachealintubation or reversal agent would have been needed. All the patients were discharged on theday of surgery and able to ambulate normally. Conclusions Our results indicate that anesthetic methods, where the TCI of propofol andremifentanil is used, might replace general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation in breastaugmentation surgery.

Abstract: There exist some several method offer similar functions and current technologies are poor to discriminate the important weights of attributes of enterprise resource planning system, due to the complexity of metrics and involvement of consumer’s vague perception. Entropy method is used to determine the weight of evaluation indexes and establish multi-level fuzzy synthetic evaluation model. Its application is illustrated with example, which can provide the intuitive and effective method for decision-makers in enterprise resource planning system selection. In this paper, we introduce a linguistic entropy method and fuzzy synthetic evaluation method. Moreover, a satisfaction-based index of software quality model is established to perform the discrimination of fuzzy ranking of alternatives. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the process of enterprise resource planning system selection. The experimental results demonstrated that it is a feasible and trustworthy manner to select of the system selection using the proposed scheme.

Abstract: Fas-associated protein with death domain (FADD), an adaptorthat bridges death receptor signaling to the caspase cascade, isindispensible for the induction of extrinsic apoptotic cell death.Interest in the non-apoptotic function of FADD has greatlyincreased due to evidence that FADD-deficient mice ordominant-negative FADD transgenic mice result in embryoniclethality and an immune defect without showing apoptoticfeatures. Numerous studies have suggested that FADD regulatescell cycle progression, proliferation, and autophagy, affectingthese phenomena. Recently, programmed necrosis, also callednecroptosis, was shown to be a key mechanism that inducesembryonic lethality and an immune defect. Supporting thesefindings, FADD was shown to be involved in various necroptosismodels. In this review, we summarize the mechanism ofextrinsic apoptosis and necroptosis, and discuss the in vivo andin vitro roles of FADD in necroptosis induced by various stimuli.

Abstract: In addition to its pivotal role in neuronal survival, PI3K/Aktsignaling is integral to neuronal differentiation and neuriteoutgrowth. However, the exact role of Akt in neuronaldifferentiation is still controversial. Here, we found thatnuclear expression of CA-Akt resulted in unusual rapid neuriteoutgrowth and overexpression of KD-Akt caused multipledendrite growth without specific axon elongation. Moreover, microarray data revealed that the expression of FOXQ1expression was about 10-fold higher in cells with nuclear, active Akt than in control cells. Quantitative real-time PCRanalysis showed that mRNA levels were upregulated inNLS-CA-Akt cells as compared to KD or EV cells. Furthermore, our FACS analysis demonstrated that overexpression ofNLS-CA-Akt accumulate cells in the G1 phase within 24 h,fitting with the rapid sprouting of neuritis. Thus, our dataimplied that at least in this early time frame, the overexpressionof nuclear, active Akt forced cells into neurite developmentthrough probably FOXQ1regulation.

Abstract: Pyometra is one of the most common reproductive disorder characterized as fluid accumulation mainly pus and Gram-negative bacteria isolated from uterus in bitches. Impaired function of vasopressin is found in the disease. The impact of the circulating endotoxin concentration on vasopressin involved water regulation is still unclear. To document the effect of endotoxin on vasopressin-involved water regulation in dogs with pyometra, blood samples were collected for examination of circulating endotoxin concentration, osmolarity values, vasopressin concentrations, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine. The results indicated that the concentration change of endotoxin was contrary to BUN and creatinine in dogs with pyometra. The trends of concentrations change of BUN and creatinine were similar with osmolarity and vasopressin. Pyometric dogs with high level of circulating endotoxin had significantly lower (P<0.05) plasma osmolarity and vasopressin concentration than those which had low levels of serum endotoxin. Plasma osmolarity was positive correlated with both BUN and creatinine concentrations (rP=0.55 and 0.53, respectively; P<0.01). Likewise, the vasopressin concentration showed good correlation with serum creatinine value (rP=0.73; P<0.05). Pyometric dogs with high levels of BUN (> 20 mg/dL) and creatinine (> 1.5 mg/dL) also had plasma vasopressin significantly higher (P<0.05) than those with low levels of BUN and creatinine and control dogs. The overall results suggested that elevated vasopressin was not mainly associated with the circulating endotoxin concentration and some other factors may collaborate with endotoxin causing impaired function of vasopressin.
